Dorm move-out checklist for unwanted items

For a dorm move-out, first confirm your residence housing office’s checkout deadline and authorized staging location. Then have roommates label what to keep, donate or remove; protect university-owned furniture; remove personal data from electronics; count and photograph items; and plan how everything will travel through elevators or stairs. Accepted items must be outside and accessible before Dropcurb pickup, although you can book before staging them.

Confirm the move-out constraints

Ask housing about the checkout deadline and where unwanted items may be staged. Do not place items in an outdoor location until that location and timing are authorized. Keep university-owned furniture and equipment separate from personal items unless housing tells you otherwise.

Sort items with roommates

Label each item or group as keep, donate or remove. Count the items and take photos before they leave the room so everyone agrees on what is going and what remains.

Prepare electronics and batteries

Remove personal information from computers, phones and other electronics before donation or recycling. Check the device maker, retailer or a local facility for its intake rules, and use a separate recycling route when batteries require one.

Reuse suitable moving boxes

If your boxes are still suitable for reuse, check whether a company-owned U-Haul location has a Take a Box Leave a Box area or use U-Haul’s Box Exchange. Confirm the location and box condition before relying on that option.

Plan the move to staging

Work out the route through elevators and stairs before move-out day, including how items will reach the authorized outdoor handoff point. If an item needs disassembly or indoor carry-out, arrange that labor yourself. Dropcurb’s standard pickup begins only after accepted items are outside and accessible.

Where Dropcurb fits

For accepted leftovers already outside and accessible, Dropcurb handles loading, transport and disposal. Dorm-suitable examples include a twin mattress, mini fridge, standard desk or filled household box, with each accepted item prepared and counted according to its item definition. Arrange housing permission for the outdoor staging location and make sure the pickup area is accessible; if you need indoor carrying, use a service that includes that labor.

Use the bulky-item pickup scope to separate furniture, appliances and filled boxes in the booking.
