Appliances need special handling rather than an ordinary extra item pickup, and the authority also recycles them at the landfill with the doors removed from refrigerators and freezers.
City cost & eligibility
The hauler sets its own appliance charge, and the authority's landfill publishes its own appliance recycling rate for a self hauled unit, so confirm the route and the price with the company or the site before the appliance leaves the house.
When & how
Call the hauler to schedule the appliance rather than setting it out with an extra trash pile, or take it to Metro Park East Landfill during its posted weekday and Saturday hours.
Get it ready
Empty the unit completely, remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before landfill recycling, and ask the hauler when the pickup is booked whether the refrigerant has to be recovered and tagged first, because the city does not publish that step. Secure any door left on a unit that is waiting for pickup.
Five haulers serve the city, and each one prices its own service
Ankeny Sanitation, Aspen Waste Systems, Garbage Guys, Waste Connections of Iowa and Waste Management of Iowa all collect residential garbage in the city, and the city sends residents to the company they use for rates, pickup days and times, yard waste fees, large item and extra trash procedures, missed collections and cart changes. The city itself publishes no collection rate.
Metro Park East Landfill takes the self hauled loads
The landfill at 12181 NE University Ave. in Mitchellville is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. between April 1 and October 31 or from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. between November 1 and March 31. Small vehicles pay a flat rate by vehicle and larger vehicles pay by the ton with a minimum, and a load mixing material types is charged at the highest applicable rate.

Residential garbage, construction and demolition material, yard waste at the compost center on site, mattresses and box springs, appliances including refrigerators, freezers, ranges, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water heaters, furnaces, washers, dryers, dishwashers and microwaves, electronics and televisions that do not contain a cathode ray tube, tires and bulky waste such as telephone poles and unprepared trees.
Cathode ray tube electronics and televisions are refused, doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers before appliance recycling, loads carrying more than one material type are charged at the highest applicable rate, and payment is due at the time of service by cash or card. Bulky waste over 6 feet long and 18 inches in diameter carries its own per ton rate.
Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. between April 1 and October 31 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. between November 1 and March 31.
From $12 for the flat rate for a car load under 200 pounds, with vans and SUVs and then large vehicles at higher flat rates, and vehicles over 6,000 pounds charged by the ton with a minimum for residential garbage, yard waste, construction and demolition material and electronics, plus separate appliance, television and tire rates. Any household delivering waste to the landfill, with payment due at the time of service. A load that mixes material types is charged at the highest applicable rate, and appliance recycling has its own published residential rate.
