A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Bulk junk removal in Pekin: start with the item’s collection rules, then choose the arrangement that fits.

Couches, sofas and large furniture

Not on the regular city route

Furniture is a bulk item under Ordinance 2960 and is prohibited from the Pekin solid waste collection, so the City cart cannot be used for it.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no bulky item pickup, so a couch or other furniture has to go through a private removal service or another arrangement, and the department line on 309-477-2325 is the place to ask what the City will and will not accept at the curb.
When & how
Do not set furniture out with the household garbage. Ask the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 what the City will collect, and arrange the removal separately.
Get it ready
Keep the item out of the 96-gallon cart and out of the alley or street right of way, because the City code also prohibits dumping refuse in an alley, gutter, street or other public way.

Mattresses and box springs

Not on the regular city route

A mattress is named in the City's own definition of a prohibited bulk item, so it cannot go into the Pekin cart or be set out with the household garbage.

City cost & eligibility
The prohibition list names bulk items too large for the cart including furniture and mattresses, and the City publishes no mattress collection, so the disposal has to be arranged privately.
When & how
Keep the mattress out of the curbside collection and arrange its disposal separately, using the department line on 309-477-2325 to confirm anything the City might accept.
Get it ready
Do not leave the mattress in an alley or on the parkway, because the code prohibits refuse in a public way, and do not break it down into the cart, because the prohibition covers the item itself rather than only its size.

Household appliances and white goods

Not on the regular city route

Household appliances are prohibited from the Pekin collection, and appliances also appear on the City list of material that will not be accepted at all.

City cost & eligibility
The City lists household appliances among the prohibited material and separately states that appliances will not be accepted at all, and it publishes no appliance pickup or appliance sticker, so the household arranges the disposal itself.
When & how
Do not put an appliance out with the cart. Arrange private removal and call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 if the item needs to be confirmed.
Get it ready
Keep the appliance out of the cart and off the public way, and take anything that will be hauled separately off the curb promptly, since the code prohibits refuse left in an alley, gutter, street or other public way.
City garbage page with the cart specification and price, the code fee schedule, the sole-provider rule, the 6 a.m. curb time, the Ordinance 2960 prohibition list and the electronics drop-off line

Refrigerators, freezers and water heaters

Not on the regular city route

Cooling appliances and water heaters belong to the appliance category the Pekin collection refuses, and water heaters are named on the refusal list.

City cost & eligibility
The City refuses appliances and water heaters outright and publishes no refrigerant handling rule, certification or cooling appliance charge, because no City collection route exists for them.
When & how
Keep the appliance out of the curbside collection and arrange its disposal separately instead of booking anything with the City.
Get it ready
Empty a refrigerator or freezer before it leaves the property and let the receiving company handle the refrigerant, because the City publishes no cooling appliance service and sets no preparation rule for one.

Construction and remodeling debris

Not on the regular city route

Building and construction material is prohibited from the Pekin collection, with one standing exception for carpet that is rolled and within the size and weight limits.

City cost & eligibility
Ordinance 2960 prohibits building or construction material from the solid waste collection and the City publishes no construction debris pickup, so a renovation load has to go through a private arrangement.
When & how
Arrange the removal of construction and remodeling material separately, and only set out carpet when it meets the rolled bundle limits the City publishes.
Get it ready
Carpet is the exception: it is accepted when it is rolled into bundles of no more than four feet in length and no more than fifty pounds in weight. Keep lumber, drywall, tile and other building material out of the cart, do not leave it in the alley or on the street, and do not mix it with the household garbage.
City garbage page with the cart specification and price, the code fee schedule, the sole-provider rule, the 6 a.m. curb time, the Ordinance 2960 prohibition list and the electronics drop-off line

Exercise equipment

Not on the regular city route

Exercise equipment is not collected by the City and, as an item too large for the 96-gallon cart, it falls under the prohibited bulky material rule.

City cost & eligibility
The City does not name exercise equipment in the collection programme and does publish a prohibition on bulk items too large for the cart, so no City collection route exists and the disposal is arranged privately.
When & how
Keep the machine out of the curbside collection and arrange its removal separately, confirming any question on the Solid Waste Department line at 309-477-2325.
Get it ready
Do not break the machine down into the cart or leave it on the parkway, and keep it clear of the alley and street so it does not sit in a public way.
City garbage page with the cart specification and price, the code fee schedule, the sole-provider rule, the 6 a.m. curb time, the Ordinance 2960 prohibition list and the electronics drop-off line

Bulky items and oversized loads

Not on the regular city route

Bulky items are prohibited from the Pekin collection, and the City publishes no bulky item pickup, so oversized loads are the household's own arrangement.

City cost & eligibility
The City code prohibits bulk items that are too large to fit inside the 96-gallon cart and the City publishes no bulky collection service or bulky fee, so the only published routes for oversized material are a private removal company or another arrangement the household makes.
When & how
Do not set oversized material out on the collection day. Ask the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 what the collection will accept and arrange the rest privately.
Get it ready
Keep everything inside the 96-gallon cart on the collection day, keep refused material off the parkway, alley and street, and never store combustible refuse where it can create a fire hazard, which the City code also prohibits.

Weekly collection with the cart at the curb by 6 a.m.

The Solid Waste Department collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City is the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. All garbage goes to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, the day itself is set by the address on the City collection map, and the 96-gallon cart is a one-time purchase made on the second floor of City Hall with delivery normally within one to two business days.

Holidays push the rest of the week one day later

When Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekday, there is no garbage, recycling or yard waste pickup that day, that day's pickup moves to the following day and the rest of the week runs one day behind. If one of those holidays falls on a Saturday or Sunday the collection week runs on its regular schedule even when City Hall is closed.

City solid waste division page with the three divisions, the weekly curbside service, the cart purchase and the holiday shift rule

What the ordinance keeps out of the collection

Since Ordinance 2960 took effect on April 19, 2021, the collection does not take building or construction material, bulk items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, animal remains and animal waste that is not placed in a separate bag or container, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and other material that the disposal facility cannot accept, or paint cans unless the paint is completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and the City code separately prohibits dumping refuse, grass, leaves or branches in an alley, gutter, street or other public way, storing combustible refuse so that it creates a fire hazard, or leaving refuse where the wind can scatter it.

Yard waste and recycling run on their own terms

Yard waste is separated from garbage under the Illinois law the City cites and is collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and all of it is recycled. Recycling is a voluntary curbside programme: a household makes a one-time purchase of a 64-gallon roll-out cart, which is billed on the following month's water and sewer bill with no additional monthly charge, and only the owner of the property can be billed, so a tenant buys containers at the City. Christmas trees may go out with the regular garbage collection and are the only trees the City allows.

City of Pekin Solid Waste Department

The City collection account the household already pays

A household in a single-family home or a building of four units or fewer that is deciding what can go out with the weekly cart.

Cost & conditions
$27 for monthly garbage collection fee billed as a separate line on the wastewater bill, listed at 27 dollars from May 1, 2026 after 25 dollars from May 1, 2024 and 26 dollars from May 1, 2025, and rising to 28 dollars from May 1, 2027, with a one-time 60 dollar purchase for a 96-gallon cart. City of Pekin residential accounts for single-family homes and buildings of four units or fewer, where the City is the sole provider of solid waste collection.
Arrange it
Set the cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day shown on the City collection map, and call 309-477-2325 with questions about the route, the cart or the bill.

The fee covers household garbage, yard waste and recycling only, and the collection will not take construction material, bulky items such as furniture and mattresses, appliances, electronics, hazardous waste or paint that is not completely dried.

Open the City garbage page

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Pekin publishes no self-haul facility of its own. The City garbage page mentions only that Christmas trees are the one tree allowed in the landfill, without naming a landfill, an address or hours, and the retained bodies carry no transfer station or public drop-off site for household waste. A household that wants to haul its own load therefore has to ask the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 where material can be taken, and the cart has to be used for household garbage because the City is the sole provider and the code prohibits refuse left in an alley, gutter, street or other public way. The published drop-off route that does exist is for electronics, at the local places the City lists under Public Act 95-0959, and the City sells its own 96-gallon garbage cart and 64-gallon recycling cart rather than accepting a household-hauled load. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Pekin.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Pekin?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

Will the City pick up a couch or other furniture?

No. Bulky items are defined as items too large to fit inside the 96-gallon cart, including furniture and mattresses, and they are prohibited from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960. The City publishes no bulky item pickup, so a household arranges the removal itself and can call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 to check what the collection will accept.Official guidance

Does the City take mattresses?

No. The City defines a bulk item as something too large to fit inside a 96-gallon cart, names furniture and mattresses as examples, and lists bulk items among the material prohibited from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960. A mattress therefore needs a private disposal arrangement rather than a spot at the curb.Official guidance

Can I put an appliance at the curb?

No. Household appliances are in the list of material prohibited from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960, and the same page states plainly that appliances, water heaters, large batteries, tires, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals will not be accepted at all. A household arranges its own disposal and can call 309-477-2325 with questions.Official guidance

Will the City take a refrigerator or water heater?

No. The City states that appliances and water heaters will not be accepted at all and lists household appliances among the material prohibited from the solid waste collection. There is no City cooling appliance route, so the household arranges the disposal with a company that handles the appliance and its refrigerant.Official guidance

Will the City take construction material or carpet?

Building and construction material is prohibited from the solid waste collection, so a remodeling load needs a private arrangement. Carpet is the one published exception: it is accepted when it is rolled into bundles no longer than four feet and no heavier than fifty pounds. Anything left in an alley, gutter, street or other public way is also prohibited by the City code.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a treadmill?

The City does not collect it. A treadmill is an item too large for the 96-gallon cart, and the City prohibits bulk items of that kind from the solid waste collection, so the removal has to be arranged privately. Call 309-477-2325 if the item needs to be confirmed against what the collection will accept.Official guidance

What happens to things too big for the cart?

They are not collected. The City defines a bulk item as one too large to fit inside the 96-gallon cart and prohibits bulk items from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960, and the same page lists material that will not be accepted at all, including appliances, water heaters, electronics, tires, paint and hazardous chemicals. Households arrange the removal themselves and can call 309-477-2325 with questions.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Pekin?

The City of Pekin Solid Waste Department does. The department has three divisions, garbage, recycling and yard waste, collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City code makes it the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. The department can be reached on 309-477-2325.Official guidance

What will the City collection not take?

Under Ordinance 2960 the collection refuses building and construction material, bulky items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and paint that is not completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and carpet is the one standing exception when it is rolled into bundles no longer than four feet and no heavier than fifty pounds.Official guidance

How does the cart and the bill work?

A 96-gallon garbage cart is a one-time purchase of 60 dollars made on the second floor of City Hall at 111 South Capitol Street, and the cart is normally delivered to the curb within one to two business days. The collection fee is billed on the monthly wastewater bill as a separate line item, listed at 27 dollars a month from May 1, 2026 and rising to 28 dollars from May 1, 2027, and it covers garbage, recycling and yard waste together.Official guidance

When do yard waste and recycling run?

Yard waste is separated from garbage under Illinois law and collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and everything collected is recycled. Recycling is voluntary: a household buys a 64-gallon roll-out cart once for 40 dollars, billed on the following month's water and sewer bill, with no additional monthly charge, and only the property owner can be billed, so tenants buy containers at the City.Official guidance

How do I get rid of furniture, an appliance or a mattress?

Not through the City collection. Bulk items are defined as anything too large for the 96-gallon cart and are prohibited, and appliances and electronics are refused as well. Pekin publishes no bulky item pickup, so the household arranges a private removal, and it can call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 to confirm anything the collection might still accept. Televisions, computers and printers go to the local drop-off places the City lists, with a charge per television or monitor.Official guidance
