The local disposal guide
Pekin collects household garbage through its own Solid Waste Department, and the department is the sole provider of residential collection for single-family homes and buildings of four units or fewer. The service runs weekly, the City sells a 96-gallon cart for a one-time purchase and bills a monthly collection fee on the water and sewer bill, and the cart has to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day. What the program does not take matters as much as what it does: since Ordinance 2960 took effect in April 2021, building and construction material, bulky items too large for the 96-gallon cart such as furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and paint that is not completely dried are all prohibited from the solid waste collection, and tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright. Carpet is the standing exception, accepted when it is rolled into bundles of no more than four feet and fifty pounds, and Christmas trees are the one tree the City allows. Yard waste is separated under Illinois law and collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and recycling is a voluntary curbside program that starts with a one-time purchase of a 64-gallon cart.

The handoff matters
The Solid Waste Department collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City is the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. All garbage goes to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, the day itself is set by the address on the City collection map, and the 96-gallon cart is a one-time purchase made on the second floor of City Hall with delivery normally within one to two business days.

If one of those holidays falls on a Saturday or Sunday the collection week runs on its regular schedule even when City Hall is closed.
City solid waste division page with the three divisions, the weekly curbside service, the cart purchase and the holiday shift ruleSince Ordinance 2960 took effect on April 19, 2021, the collection does not take building or construction material, bulk items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, animal remains and animal waste that is not placed in a separate bag or container, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and other material that the disposal facility cannot accept, or paint cans unless the paint is completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and the City code separately prohibits dumping refuse, grass, leaves or branches in an alley, gutter, street or other public way, storing combustible refuse so that it creates a fire hazard, or leaving refuse where the wind can scatter it.

No. Bulky items are defined as items too large to fit inside the 96-gallon cart, including furniture and mattresses, and they are prohibited from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960. The City publishes no bulky item pickup, so a household arranges the removal itself and can call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 to check what the collection will accept.Official guidance
No. Household appliances are in the list of material prohibited from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960, and the same page states plainly that appliances, water heaters, large batteries, tires, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals will not be accepted at all. A household arranges its own disposal and can call 309-477-2325 with questions.Official guidance
The City prohibits electronics from the solid waste collection and points residents to drop-off places for equipment such as televisions, computers and printers, with a published charge per television and monitor and a higher charge for big screens. The City extract retained for this packet is truncated after the first location, so confirm the list and the current charge with the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325.Official guidance
They are not collected. The City defines a bulk item as one too large to fit inside the 96-gallon cart and prohibits bulk items from the solid waste collection under Ordinance 2960, and the same page lists material that will not be accepted at all, including appliances, water heaters, electronics, tires, paint and hazardous chemicals. Households arrange the removal themselves and can call 309-477-2325 with questions.Official guidance
The City of Pekin Solid Waste Department does. The department has three divisions, garbage, recycling and yard waste, collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City code makes it the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. The department can be reached on 309-477-2325.Official guidance
Under Ordinance 2960 the collection refuses building and construction material, bulky items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and paint that is not completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and carpet is the one standing exception when it is rolled into bundles no longer than four feet and no heavier than fifty pounds.Official guidance
A 96-gallon garbage cart is a one-time purchase of 60 dollars made on the second floor of City Hall at 111 South Capitol Street, and the cart is normally delivered to the curb within one to two business days. The collection fee is billed on the monthly wastewater bill as a separate line item, listed at 27 dollars a month from May 1, 2026 and rising to 28 dollars from May 1, 2027, and it covers garbage, recycling and yard waste together.Official guidance
Yard waste is separated from garbage under Illinois law and collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and everything collected is recycled. Recycling is voluntary: a household buys a 64-gallon roll-out cart once for 40 dollars, billed on the following month's water and sewer bill, with no additional monthly charge, and only the property owner can be billed, so tenants buy containers at the City.Official guidance
Not through the City collection. Bulk items are defined as anything too large for the 96-gallon cart and are prohibited, and appliances and electronics are refused as well. Pekin publishes no bulky item pickup, so the household arranges a private removal, and it can call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 to confirm anything the collection might still accept. Televisions, computers and printers go to the local drop-off places the City lists, with a charge per television or monitor.Official guidance
