Yard waste, grass and leaves

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is separated from garbage under Illinois law and collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and it is covered by the same monthly collection fee as the garbage.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the City monthly garbage collection fee, which the code says covers yard waste and recycling as well as standard household garbage, for single-family homes and buildings of four units or fewer.
When & how
Put yard waste out for the weekly collection between April 7 and December 19, on the same collection day as the garbage, and expect the holiday shift rule to move the week one day later when a City-observed holiday falls in it.
Get it ready
Keep yard waste separate from the household garbage because Illinois law requires the separation, and remember that Christmas trees are the only trees the City accepts, and they may be set out for the regular garbage collection.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Pekin publishes no self-haul facility of its own. The City garbage page mentions only that Christmas trees are the one tree allowed in the landfill, without naming a landfill, an address or hours, and the retained bodies carry no transfer station or public drop-off site for household waste. A household that wants to haul its own load therefore has to ask the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 where material can be taken, and the cart has to be used for household garbage because the City is the sole provider and the code prohibits refuse left in an alley, gutter, street or other public way. The published drop-off route that does exist is for electronics, at the local places the City lists under Public Act 95-0959, and the City sells its own 96-gallon garbage cart and 64-gallon recycling cart rather than accepting a household-hauled load. Where should I put my items?

Use an accessible outdoor spot you are allowed to use, and follow the instructions in your confirmation. Keep sidewalks, entrances and vehicle access clear. You arrange any indoor carrying. For a loading dock or a short building access window, confirm the setup with our team before booking.

When is yard waste collected?

Weekly from April 7 through December 19, on the household's collection day and separate from the garbage, because Illinois law requires yard waste to be kept out of the waste stream and the City sends all of it for recycling. The collection fee on the monthly wastewater bill covers yard waste along with garbage and recycling, and Christmas trees are the one tree the City takes and may be set out with the regular garbage.Official guidance
