When & how
On the same day as the regularly scheduled garbage collection, with no separate appointment. A household with an atypically large item is told to contact the hauler first to verify that it can be collected.
Get it ready
Reduce an item to a safe size before it goes out. The City requires a toilet tank to be separated from the bowl, boards, poles and other long solid objects to be cut into sections no longer than four feet, bed bug infested mattresses, furniture and furnishings to be wrapped in plastic, a king size box spring to be cut in half and a king size mattress to be folded in half and secured with tape or rope, and an appliance containing refrigerant to carry a certification from a licensed refrigeration technician that the item is refrigerant free.
Rockford collects garbage, yard waste in season and bulk items on the same day, and each one has its own rules. Household trash is unlimited in containers or bags of 13 to 40 gallons under 50 pounds, yard waste goes out in paper bags or in a can of 32 gallons or less marked with a large X, and a bulk item goes out reduced to a safe size rather than left whole.

The City labels that list a courtesy rather than a recommendation.
