The contract then prices the genuine exception: an item that takes two or more collectors or a special truck, such as a piano, hot tub or spa, is collected as an oversized bulk item.
One piece of furniture comes off the property on the regular service day as part of the weekly bulk allowance, on the condition that each piece is light enough for one person to handle or is broken down into 50 pound pieces. The operator asks for a phone call before a large sofa so it can send a separate truck.
A mattress and box spring can go out together and are taken as a set on the regular collection day, which makes bedding part of the one large item a week allowance. A unit with bed bugs has to be wrapped or sealed in plastic before it is set out.
One large appliance a week is included with the residential service and is collected by a separate truck with a lift gate, so an appliance needs a call ahead and goes next to the cart rather than through the usual driver. The weekly bulk program takes two cans of construction debris as long as each can weighs no more than 50 pounds, which covers wood, fencing and shingles on a small job. Anything larger is routed to a transfer station charged by the ton or to a rented dumpster.
Exercise equipment is not named in the village contract or in the operator's bulk list, so a machine has to be tested against the handling rule that applies to every bulk item: one person must be able to lift it, or it has to come apart into 50 pound pieces.
The handoff matters
Tinley Park's contract with Homewood Disposal Services took effect January 20, 2026, and the village publishes what it bought: a brown 95 gallon garbage cart and a green 95 gallon recycling cart at every home, additional carts for rent at 3 dollars a month for recycling, and benefits that include electronic collection, Christmas tree collection, senior and veteran discounts and an opt-in for townhome and condominium associations. As of October 1, 2026 the monthly rate is 31.16 dollars for residents, 29.66 for residents 65 and over, and nothing for certified 100 percent disabled veterans, with the discounts available only to households in the village program paying contractual rates. Village ordinance requires carts at the end of the driveway and not in the street, and payments go to Homewood Disposal rather than Village Hall.
