Refrigerators, water heaters and other white goods
Accepted with preparation
White goods such as refrigerators and water heaters take ten LRS stickers and are collected by a separate truck at the end of the day.
City cost & eligibility
From $3.62 per sticker at the current contract year price, with a white good such as a refrigerator or water heater requiring ten stickers. Wheaton residential LRS accounts, with white goods defined as appliances containing CFC, HCFC, PCBs, mercury switches or other hazardous components.
When & how
Attach the ten stickers and put the unit at the curb on your garbage day, knowing that the city says all white goods are collected by a separate truck at the end of the day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it out of the recycling cart and off the electronics load, and keep items with refrigerant on this white goods route rather than with the regular garbage.
Carts go out between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the truck scans them
Pickup days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday and the same day covers garbage, recycling and yard waste, with material at the curb between 7 p.m. the night before collection and 6 a.m. on the collection day and containers back in by 7 p.m. that day. Residents must use the LRS carts provided for the home, each cart carries a tag the truck scans, the account is billed each time a cart is set out, and the carts stay with the house when a resident moves.
Each bag, container, stack and bulk item needs the listed number of stickers
LRS stickers cover yard waste, leaves, organics, garbage that will not fit in the cart, electronics and bulk items. One sticker covers an excess garbage bag or a biodegradable yard waste bag or container that stays inside the size and weight limits, one covers a stack of brush or tree trimmings, a bulk item such as carpeting, a mattress or a toilet needs five stickers, a white good such as a refrigerator or water heater needs ten, and a curbside television or monitor needs ten. Yard waste, leaves, food scraps and organics are collected from the first full week of April through the second full week of December, and live Christmas trees are picked up free with no sticker during the two weeks after Christmas.
Hazardous waste and the wrong materials stay out of the carts and piles
Paint, pesticides, poisons, cleaning solvents, tainted gasoline, used oil and other automotive fluids are hazardous waste and must not go in the regular garbage, and the city sends residents to the DuPage County program. Plastic bags, scrap metal, mirrors, window glass and Pyrex, dishes, light bulbs, number 6 plastic, polystyrene and hazardous waste containers cannot go in the recycling cart, and grease, aluminum foil, cooking oil, liquids, hazardous waste, plastic, cleaning supplies, pizza boxes, diapers and pet litter cannot go in with the yard waste.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

$5.21 per pickup for the 65 gallon garbage cart at the current contract year rate, with recycling billed separately per pickup and stickers charged per sticker. Wheaton residential accounts served by Lakeshore Recycling Systems, where garbage and recycling are charged per pickup and only when a cart is set out and scanned.
Arrange it
Use the LRS carts provided for the home, put material at the curb between 7 p.m. the night before and 6 a.m. on the pickup day, call LRS at 773-685-8811 for cart, service or billing questions, and attach the required stickers to anything that does not fit in the cart.
Only the LRS carts are allowed and they stay with the house when you move, household hazardous waste must not go in the garbage, and paint, pesticides, solvents, used oil and automotive fluids are referred to the DuPage County program.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
