A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Extra trash and bulky item collection

Accepted with preparation

City residents can set extra trash or bulky items at the curb at any time and request a pickup, with up to 20 bags or boxes, two pieces of furniture and two appliances qualifying.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City describes the extra trash and bulky item collection as a courtesy service included with residential trash service, with no charge published. It asks residents to use it as needed rather than weekly, and anything beyond the published limits is the property owner's responsibility and is handled by a private hauler.
When & how
Set the items at the curb first, then request the pickup through the CurbCycle app or the Department of Public Works at 812-376-2509, because a request is not fulfilled until the material is out and ready. There is no same-day guarantee, and the City aims to collect within 24 to 48 hours. Items may go out at any time rather than waiting for the trash day.
Get it ready
Keep the pile at the curb in an accessible spot away from obstructions, and keep televisions, monitors and screens, carpeting, lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing and construction or remodeling debris out of it entirely. Collections are not made on private streets, at not-for-profit agencies or businesses, or in alleys.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Up to two pieces of furniture qualify for the curbside extra trash and bulky item collection, which the City picks up after a request.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Up to two pieces of furniture are accepted at no charge through the City's courtesy extra trash and bulky item collection. A larger load is the property owner's responsibility and goes to a private hauler.
When & how
Set the pieces at the curb whenever convenient, then request the pickup through the CurbCycle app or at 812-376-2509. The City aims for collection within 24 to 48 hours and does not guarantee a same-day pickup.
Get it ready
Keep the pieces in an accessible spot at the curb away from obstructions, and keep carpeting out of the pile, because carpeting is on the refused list along with construction and remodeling debris.
Extra trash and bulky item collection page with the qualifying limits, the refused material list, the request process and the recommended private vendors

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

No Columbus or Bartholomew County page read for this packet names a mattress, so the route has to be confirmed rather than assumed from the furniture wording.

City cost & eligibility
Mattresses are not named in the City's bulky item limits, in the refused list, in the yard waste or trash guidelines, or in the county recycling center and landfill accepted material lists read here, so confirm the item with the Department of Public Works at 812-376-2509 before it goes to the curb. A mattress accepted as a bulky item would count against the two piece furniture limit.
When & how
Call before the mattress goes out. If it qualifies, set it at the curb and request the pickup through the CurbCycle app or the same phone line, and expect collection within 24 to 48 hours rather than the same day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the trash toter and out of the yard waste toter, and keep it dry. If the City will not take it, ask about the county facilities at the same time, because the landfill and recycling center pages read here do not list bedding.

Appliances, including refrigerant units

Accepted with preparation

Up to two appliances qualify for the curbside bulky collection, and the county landfill takes refrigerant containing appliances for a published per unit charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Up to two appliances go out at no charge through the City's courtesy bulky collection. A third appliance, or an appliance the City refuses, is the property owner's responsibility, and the county landfill charges $20 per CFC refrigerant containing appliance.
When & how
Set the appliance at the curb and request the pickup through the CurbCycle app or at 812-376-2509, aiming for collection within 24 to 48 hours. For a refrigerant unit taken to the landfill instead, go during its open hours, which are Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the backside closing at 1:00 p.m.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and keep it out of the toters. A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioning unit holds refrigerant, so it goes either on the curbside bulky request or to the county landfill's refrigerant appliance program rather than into a scrap metal pile.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and monitors are refused in the curbside bulky collection and go to the Bartholomew County program, which charges a flat fee per television or monitor.

City cost & eligibility
$20 per television or computer monitor brought to the county Recycling Center or Landfill. The Bartholomew County district charges $20 for all televisions and computer monitors at either site, under its residential electronics recycling program, which is registered with Indiana's electronic waste program. Residential material only, with no business electronic waste accepted.
When & how
Take the devices to the Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center at 720 S. Mapleton Street, open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or to the Bartholomew County Landfill at 811 E. CR 450 S., open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the backside closing at 1:00 p.m. A projection television should go to the landfill because of space limits at the recycling center.
Get it ready
Keep televisions, monitors and screens out of the curbside bulky pile entirely, because the City names them as non-qualifying. Most items with a cord or computer related electronics are accepted, while items primarily of glass, ceramic or wood and any cannibalized item are refused.

Construction, remodeling and clean-out debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and remodeling debris is refused in the curbside bulky collection, and the City directs those loads to private haulers instead of a city service.

City cost & eligibility
The City lists lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing and any construction or remodeling debris as non-qualifying for the curbside extra trash and bulky item collection, along with house clean-outs of more than 20 bags or boxes, and states that disposing of those items is the property owner's responsibility. It recommends Rumpke at 812-372-1225, Best Way Disposal at 800-354-1830 and Waste Management at 502-702-4013, none of which publishes a rate on the City page.
When & how
Arrange the load with a private hauler before the project produces debris, because it cannot go out with the toters or on the curbside bulky pile.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of every toter and off the bulky pile, and keep carpeting out as well, because the City refuses carpeting along with construction and remodeling debris. The county landfill page read here lists no construction material, so confirm the receiving site before loading.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Set the bulk pile out first, then request the pickup

Extra trash and bulky items can go to the curb at any time, but the City will not fulfill a request until the material is out and ready, so the pile goes out first and the request follows through the CurbCycle app or 812-376-2509. The City aims for 24 to 48 hours, does not promise same-day service, and asks residents to use the service as needed rather than weekly.

Two furniture pieces, two appliances, twenty bags

The curbside allowance is up to two pieces of furniture, up to two appliances and up to 20 bags or boxes of trash. Televisions, monitors and screens, carpeting, lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing, construction and remodeling debris, and clean-outs beyond 20 bags are refused, and a load like that is the property owner's responsibility through a private hauler.

The county takes what the curb will not

The Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center on Mapleton Street and the Bartholomew County Landfill on CR 450 S. accept residential electronic waste with a flat charge for televisions and monitors, refrigerant containing appliances by the unit, tires on a published fee schedule, used motor oil with nothing mixed in, and scrap metal, and the recycling center also hosts the Tox-Away household hazardous waste program. Both sites serve Bartholomew County residents only.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Columbus.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Columbus?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

What can go out for the extra trash and bulky item collection?

Up to 20 bags or boxes of trash, up to two pieces of furniture and up to two appliances. The service is meant for extra trash and bulky items that will not fit in the toter, such as furniture or appliances.Official guidance

What is refused for the bulky collection?

Televisions, computer monitors and screens, carpeting, lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing, any construction or remodeling debris, and house clean-outs or move-outs of more than 20 bags or boxes. The City recommends private haulers for those loads and states that disposing of them is the property owner's responsibility.Official guidance

How do I request the pickup?

Put the items at the curb first, then use the CurbCycle app or call the Department of Public Works at 812-376-2509. The City will not fulfill a request until the items are out and ready, and it aims to collect within 24 to 48 hours without guaranteeing same-day service.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a couch in Columbus?

Set it at the curb and request a pickup through the CurbCycle app or by calling 812-376-2509. Up to two pieces of furniture qualify for the City's courtesy bulky collection, and the item can go out at any time rather than waiting for the trash day.Official guidance

How much furniture can go out at once?

Two pieces. The published limit is up to two pieces of furniture alongside up to 20 bags or boxes of trash and up to two appliances. Anything larger, or a whole house clean-out, is the property owner's responsibility and goes through a private hauler.Official guidance

Will Columbus take a mattress at the curb?

Mattresses are not named in the City's bulky item limits or its refused list, so call the Department of Public Works at 812-376-2509 to confirm before setting one out. The bulky service covers up to two pieces of furniture and up to two appliances, and mattresses are never listed separately.Official guidance

Will the county take a mattress?

The Bartholomew County recycling center and landfill pages read here list recycling, electronic waste, household hazardous waste, scrap metal, motor oil, refrigerant appliances and tires, but not bedding, so confirm with the district at 812-376-2614 before hauling a mattress there.Official guidance

How do I get rid of an appliance in Columbus?

Up to two appliances qualify for the City's curbside bulky collection, requested through the CurbCycle app or 812-376-2509 after they are set out. A refrigerant appliance can also go to the Bartholomew County Landfill, which charges a per unit fee for CFC refrigerant containing appliances.Official guidance

What about a microwave or a small appliance?

Small appliances are part of the county electronic waste program rather than the curbside bulky allowance. The accepted list names microwaves, toaster ovens, coffee makers, blenders, mixers, food processors, vacuum sweepers, electric space heaters and similar corded items, and the county charges only for televisions and computer monitors.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Columbus?

To the Bartholomew County recycling center on Mapleton Street or the county landfill on CR 450 S., which both accept residential electronic waste. Televisions and computer monitors carry a flat per unit charge, and televisions, monitors and screens are specifically refused in the City's curbside bulky collection.Official guidance

What electronic items does the county accept?

The partial list covers computers and their accessories, office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, desk phones, cell phones, modems, shredders and battery chargers, household appliances from microwaves and toasters to vacuum sweepers, corded power tools, and other appliances such as treadmills and fans. Items primarily of glass, ceramic or wood, and cannibalized items, are refused.Official guidance

How do I clear construction debris in Columbus?

Not through the City's curbside services, because lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing and any construction or remodeling debris are non-qualifying for the bulky collection and cannot go in the toters. The City recommends Rumpke, Best Way Disposal or Waste Management, and states that disposal is the property owner's responsibility.Official guidance

Can I put a whole house clean-out at the curb?

No. The City treats a move-out or clean-out of more than 20 bags or boxes as non-qualifying and the property owner's responsibility, and the vendor list it publishes is the route for that kind of load.Official guidance

How does the Columbus trash program work?

The City Sanitation Department runs an automated toter program, with trash and yard waste collected weekly and recycling every other week on the same trash day. Trash has to be bagged inside the toter, toters go out by 7 a.m. and come back within 24 hours, and anything that does not fit needs a special pickup request through the CurbCycle app or 812-376-2509.Official guidance

What is the fastest way to clear out a house in Columbus?

Set out up to two pieces of furniture, two appliances and 20 bags or boxes and request a curbside pickup, then use the county sites for the rest. Televisions and monitors go to the county program for a flat charge, refrigerant appliances and tires are charged by the unit at the landfill, household hazardous waste goes to Tox-Away, and a clean-out larger than the limits or any construction debris goes to a private hauler.Official guidance

How do I get a yard waste toter?

Sign up through the City's yard waste program online or by calling the Department of Public Works at 812-376-2509, and pay before the toter is delivered. The 2026 routes run from March 16 through December 11, and the City does not publish the toter price on the page read here, so ask when signing up.Official guidance

Where do tires go?

To the Bartholomew County Landfill, which charges per tire. Car and light truck tires are 3 dollars without a rim and 5 dollars with one, truck tires 19.5 inch and up are 14 dollars without a rim and 26 dollars with one, floaters are 22 and 36 dollars, and a farm tractor tire is 50 dollars.Official guidance

Can I get compost from the yard waste program?

Yes. Yard waste collected in the city program is composted at the Bartholomew County Yard Waste site, and residents can pick up compost at the Bartholomew County Recycling Center, either self serve or loaded for a fee. Households that skip the toter program can take yard waste to the compost site at the Department of Public Works, bringing their bags home after they are emptied.Official guidance
