Columbus collects trash, recycling, yard waste and brush itself through the Sanitation Department, on one trash day a week, with trash and yard waste weekly and recycling every other week. Everything goes in city toters and nothing sits outside them, which is why the interesting part of the program is a separate call: residents may set out extra trash or bulky items at any time, and once the pile is at the curb they request a pickup through the CurbCycle app or by phone. The published allowance is generous but exact. Up to twenty bags or boxes of trash, up to two pieces of furniture and up to two appliances qualify, while televisions, monitors, carpeting, lumber, shingles, concrete, fencing and any construction or remodeling debris do not, and a house clean-out is the property owner's problem rather than the City's. Most of what the City refuses has a county home instead: the Bartholomew County district runs a recycling center and a landfill that take electronic waste for a flat charge on televisions and monitors, refrigerant appliances and tires by the unit, and a Tox-Away household hazardous waste program at the Mapleton Street recycling center.
