The local disposal guide
Greenwood runs curbside collection for homes inside the city limits through its partner Best Way Disposal, with weekly trash and free bi-weekly recycling in city-issued carts. One monthly residential trash rate covers refuse, recycling, heavy trash and leaf and limb pickup, and heavy trash is the route for furniture, mattresses, carpet and non-refrigerant appliances during one week each month. Electronics stay out of both the trash and the recycling cart because Indiana requires them to be recycled, so they go to a state-registered collector instead. Dropcurb hauls residential items from addresses across Greenwood.

Greenwood collects household trash once a week in a city-issued cart through its partner Best Way Disposal, and every bag has to fit inside the cart. Anything extra needs a paid sticker from Greenwood Sanitation, and the bag still has to be set beside the cart in a way the truck can reach.
Greenwood provides free bi-weekly recycling in a separate city cart, collected on the same day as the trash. Cans, plastics numbered one through seven, paper and flattened cardboard go in, while plastic bags, window panes, glassware, ceramics, light bulbs, styrofoam, yard waste and electronics stay out.
Greenwood collects heavy trash once a month, during the last full week of the month, on the household's regular trash day. The city states that heavy trash is included in the monthly residential trash rate at no additional charge, so the route carries furniture, mattresses, carpet and similar household items rather than a per-item pickup.
Furniture and lawn furniture are named in the heavy trash list, so a couch, sofa, chair, table or similar piece goes out on the monthly heavy trash day. There is no published per-item charge because heavy trash is part of the monthly residential trash rate.
Mattresses are named in the heavy trash list, and the brochure asks for them to be wrapped in plastic before they go out. The monthly heavy trash day is the route, at no separate charge.
Non-freon appliances are on the heavy trash list, so a washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher goes out on the monthly heavy trash day. A unit that holds refrigerant is the exception, and it needs a sticker and a call first.
An appliance that contains refrigerant is handled separately from the rest of the heavy trash. The brochure requires a Freon sticker on a freezer, refrigerator or air conditioner, and Best Way has to be called to arrange the pickup.
Electronics are excluded from heavy trash and barred from the recycling cart, so neither curbside route takes a television or computer. Indiana's E-Cycle program requires those devices to be recycled, and the route is a state-registered collector such as the Best Buy on Fry Road, a Greenwood Goodwill or the county solid waste district.
Construction and demolition material is on the heavy trash excluded list, along with large metal pieces, so a renovation load never goes on the curbside route. A project uses a roll-off container or a private haul instead.
Exercise equipment is not named in the heavy trash list, which closes with other household items, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed with the hauler before it goes out. Heavy trash and the weekly cart route are the only curbside options.
The handoff matters
Trash and recycling must be curbside by 7 a.m. on the designated pickup day, with all trash inside the provided cart. Leave at least three feet of clearance on every side so the automated arm can reach the cart, and keep the wheels toward the house with the lid opening facing the street.
Waste Management DepartmentWaste Disposal Information and GuidelinesFor HomeHeavy trash is collected on the household's regular trash day during the last full week of each month, with the material out by 7 a.m. Bundle carpet and flooring into four foot by four foot pieces, wrap mattresses in plastic, and wrap broken glass or mirrors in cardboard and tape. Dirt, sod, rocks, pavers, concrete, cement blocks, tires, auto parts, electronics, batteries, oil, paint, pesticides, automotive fluids, household chemicals, large metal pieces, construction and demolition material and tree limbs all stay out.
Waste Disposal Information and GuidelinesWhen a holiday falls on or before the pickup day, trash and recycling are collected one day later than scheduled. The observed holidays are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the week following Christmas and New Year's brings unlimited trash pickup.
