Non-freon appliances are on the heavy trash list, so a washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher goes out on the monthly heavy trash day. A unit that holds refrigerant is the exception, and it needs a sticker and a call first.

Heavy trash is collected on the household's regular trash day during the last full week of each month, with the material out by 7 a.m. Bundle carpet and flooring into four foot by four foot pieces, wrap mattresses in plastic, and wrap broken glass or mirrors in cardboard and tape. Dirt, sod, rocks, pavers, concrete, cement blocks, tires, auto parts, electronics, batteries, oil, paint, pesticides, automotive fluids, household chemicals, large metal pieces, construction and demolition material and tree limbs all stay out.

Greenwood's curbside service comes from the city through Best Way Disposal, and the city's own drop-off is the waste management facility on West Fry Road, which takes limbs and gives residents free mulch rather than household bulky items. For the material heavy trash will not take, the routes are specific. Electronics cannot go in the trash or the recycling cart because Indiana requires them to be recycled, so they go to a state-registered collector such as the Best Buy on Fry Road, a Greenwood Goodwill or the Johnson County Solid Waste Management District in Franklin. Renovation debris needs a roll-off container or a private haul, which Best Way also offers.
