An appliance is refused in the city toter and goes either on a request based pickup with the Refuse Department or to the district collection at the La Porte County Fairgrounds, where appliances are taken free of charge.

Appliances, electronics, household hazardous waste, confidential document shredding, styrofoam and cardboard, with batteries, fluorescent bulbs, oil based paint, propane tanks, sharps and medication named on the collection dates.
A charge applies only to tires and everything else is free, propane tanks are named only on the June and September dates rather than the household hazardous waste only dates, and the collections are for La Porte County residents.
Twice a year from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the 2026 dates on Saturday 13 June and Saturday 19 September; the district's own schedule marks the September date as canceled, so confirm the next collection before loading. The district answers at (219) 326-0014.
