The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Lafayette collects through a parish contract with Acadiana Waste Services, and the weekly rhythm is simple: garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste all come on the same day, once a week. Household waste goes in the black and red cart with the lid closed, yard waste goes out bagged or in a 40 gallon can under 50 pounds, and anything too large for the cart waits at the curb at least three feet from carts, mailboxes, parked cars and yard piles. Appliances, furniture, televisions and even automobile tires fit inside that bulky stream, with tires capped at five a week for residential use. What the bulky truck will not take is a short list but a firm one: bagged garbage, construction and remodeling debris, fencing and hazardous waste. Construction loads go to a rented dumpster or a construction and demolition landfill, and household chemicals wait for a Household Hazardous Waste Day, whose dates the City announces when it schedules them.

Weekly garbage collection

Accepted with preparation

Household trash is collected once a week in the black cart with the red lid, and it is the only place bagged waste belongs.

City cost & eligibility
The City and the hauler describe the weekly service and a one time fee for a second cart but publish no monthly rate for the collection, because it is billed to the account, so confirm the current charge through Lafayette Utilities System on 337-291-8280 for an address inside the city limits or with the hauler on 337-205-7710 outside them.
When & how
Once a week on the collection day for the address, which the City publishes on an interactive map. Garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste all run on that same day, and the hauler suspends collection on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, moving that day's route to the next day and pushing the rest of the week back.
Get it ready
Bag household waste and put it in the black and red cart with the lid able to close completely, because bagged items and anything small enough for the cart are refused in the bulky pile. The cart carries a serial number assigned to the address and the arrows on the lid have to point to the street. A second 95 gallon container can be ordered for a published one time fee paid at the time of the order, and a missed collection or a stolen or broken cart is reported through Lafayette 311.

Weekly bulky item collection

Accepted with preparation

Large items that will not fit the cart are collected every week on the same day as the rest of the route, including appliances, furniture, televisions and up to five automobile tires.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Lafayette Parish residences served by the weekly hauler route, where bulky waste is collected once a week on the same day as garbage, recycling and yard waste, with no separate bulky item fee published on the City pages.
When & how
Every week on the same collection day as the other curbside streams, with the item at the curb before the service date. No appointment or phone call is required for the standard bulky pickup.
Get it ready
Place each item at least three feet from carts, mailboxes, yard waste piles and parked cars, keep overhead trees and utility lines clear above it, and leave the collection truck a clear path to it. Automobile tires are limited to five per week and to residential use. Bagged items, anything small enough for the cart, construction and remodeling debris including toilets, fencing in wood, plastic or metal, and hazardous waste do not belong in the bulky pile.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Bedding is not named in the City bulky list, so the piece has to be confirmed with the hauler before it goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for bedding and does not name mattresses among the bulky items, so call the hauler on 337-205-7710 and confirm whether the mattress rides the weekly bulky collection or needs another arrangement.
When & how
If the hauler confirms the piece, it goes out with the bulky items on the weekly collection day, at the curb before the service date.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and wrapped so the crew can lift it, and set it three feet clear of carts, mailboxes, yard piles and parked cars. Ask when you call whether a box spring or a bed frame counts as part of the same item, and keep it out of the black and red cart.
City large and bulky items page with the weekly hauler collection, the accepted list, the tire limit, the exclusions and the construction debris options

Appliances and cooling units

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named in the City bulky item list and ride the weekly collection, and the household chemical event refuses them.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Lafayette Parish residences served by the weekly hauler route, where appliances are named among the bulky items collected once a week on the same day as garbage, recycling and yard waste, with no separate appliance fee published.
When & how
Every week with the bulky stream on the collection day for the address, at the curb before the service date.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and place it with the bulky items rather than in the cart, keeping three feet of clearance from carts, mailboxes, parked cars and yard piles. Ask the hauler on 337-205-7710 how a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner that still holds refrigerant should be prepared before it is put out with the other bulky items, because the City publishes no degassing or tagging step for the curbside collection. Do not take it to the household chemical event, because appliances are refused there.
City large and bulky items page with the weekly hauler collection, the accepted list, the tire limit, the exclusions and the construction debris optionsCity household hazardous waste day page with the participating jurisdictions, the accepted chemical list, the refused item list and the division contact

Televisions and household electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions are named in the bulky item list and go out weekly, and a convenience center planned for Dugas Road expects to take electronics when it opens.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Lafayette Parish residences served by the weekly hauler route, where televisions are named among the bulky items collected once a week on the same day as garbage and yard waste, with no separate fee published. The convenience center planned for Dugas Road would admit City of Lafayette and unincorporated parish residents at no charge once it opens.
When & how
With the bulky stream on the weekly collection day, at the curb before the service date. The planned convenience center is not open yet, so it should not be used until the City announces that construction has finished.
Get it ready
Keep the television out of the black and red cart and set it with the bulky items, three feet clear of carts, mailboxes, parked cars and yard piles. The household chemical event refuses televisions of any kind along with CRT monitors, copiers and other electronic items, so the curb is the route for a television, and a smaller electronic device needs one of the retailer or specialty programs the City lists in its disposal guide.

Construction and remodeling debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and remodeling debris is refused in the bulky pile, and the City names two options: a rented dumpster or a construction and demolition landfill.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for construction debris removal because it does not collect it, naming a dumpster rental or a construction and demolition landfill instead, so confirm locations and pricing with the Environmental Quality Division on 337-291-8529 or with the container company.
When & how
Arranged outside the curbside service, either through a rented dumpster or by delivering the material to a construction and demolition landfill, and the load does not belong at the curb on collection day.
Get it ready
Keep construction and remodeling debris, repair and demolition material, toilets and fencing in wood, plastic or metal out of the bulky pile and out of the cart, because the City excludes all of them from curbside collection. The City strongly recommends requiring a contractor to remove and dispose of waste when work is hired out, and the convenience center planned for Dugas Road expects to accept construction debris once it opens.
City large and bulky items page with the weekly hauler collection, the accepted list, the tire limit, the exclusions and the construction debris optionsCity convenience center page describing the facility planned for Dugas Road, its expected hours, its residency rule, its fees for non residents and its usage limits

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere in the City material, so the machine is confirmed with the hauler before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for an item it does not name, so call the hauler on 337-205-7710 and confirm whether the machine is collected with the bulky items and what preparation it needs.
When & how
If it is accepted, the machine goes out with the bulky stream on the weekly collection day, at the curb before the service date.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when calling, break down what comes apart, and keep the load light enough for the crew to handle. Set it three feet clear of carts, mailboxes, parked cars and yard piles with nothing overhead, since the City requires bulky items to be reachable and clear of obstructions.
City large and bulky items page with the weekly hauler collection, the accepted list, the tire limit, the exclusions and the construction debris options

Yard waste and tree trimmings

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as the rest of the route, bagged or in a 40 gallon can under 50 pounds, with large trimmings piled neatly at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Lafayette Parish residences served by the weekly hauler route, where yard waste is collected once a week on the same day as garbage, recycling and bulky waste, with no separate yard waste fee published.
When & how
Every week on the collection day for the address, at the curb before the service date, and the hauler suspends the route on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, moving that day and the rest of the week back by one day.
Get it ready
Bag grass, leaves, flowers, stalks, stems and branches or put them in a 40 gallon can, and keep each bag or can under 50 pounds. Large tree trimmings that will not fit in a bag go neatly in a pile at the curb within the same weight limit. Keep the yard pile three feet from carts, mailboxes and parked cars so it does not block the collection.
City trash and recycling page with the weekly same day collection, the cart rules, the recycling enrollment and the yard waste limitsAcadiana Waste Services Lafayette FAQ with the sign up numbers, the second cart fee, the recycling cart and list, the drop off site and the holiday schedule

Paint, chemicals and hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous material stays out of every curbside stream and waits for a Household Hazardous Waste Day, whose dates the City announces when it schedules them.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no fee for Household Hazardous Waste Day and states that event dates will be announced when future collections are scheduled, so confirm the next event and any charge with the Environmental Quality Division on 337-291-8529 before the material is moved.
When & how
At a Household Hazardous Waste Day event once the City schedules one, for residents of the City of Lafayette and of unincorporated Lafayette Parish only. No standing date is published, so the material is held until an event is announced.
Get it ready
Keep chemicals, paint, gasoline, pesticides, pool chemicals, stains and solvents out of the cart and off the bulky pile, because the City excludes hazardous waste from curbside collection. The event accepts alkaline batteries, chemical cleaners, fluorescent tubes, gasoline, herbicides, mercury thermometers, paint and paint products, paint thinner and stripper, pesticides, photographic chemicals, pool chemicals, stains and turpentine, and it refuses motor oil, antifreeze, automotive and rechargeable batteries, compressed gas cylinders, medicine, medical waste, explosives, commercial waste and every electronic item, so those need a retailer or specialty program from the City's disposal guide.

Four streams, one day a week

Garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste are all collected on the same day, once a week, so the work is in separating them before the truck arrives. Household waste goes in the black and red cart with the lid closed, yard waste goes out bagged or in a 40 gallon can under 50 pounds, and bulky items wait at the curb. Weekly hauler collection for the parish

A Lafayette Parish household with household garbage, recycling, yard waste or a large item.

Cost & conditions
The City and the hauler describe the weekly service without publishing a monthly rate, because it is billed to the account, so confirm the charge through Lafayette Utilities System on 337-291-8280 inside the city limits or the hauler on 337-205-7710 in the unincorporated parish.
Arrange it
Set the four streams out separately on the collection day, keep household waste in the assigned cart with the lid closed, and report a missed pickup through Lafayette 311.

Bulky pickup refuses bagged items, construction and remodeling debris, fencing and hazardous waste, and curbside recycling is available to city residents only even though the rest of the service covers the parish.

Second garbage cart

A household that regularly fills more than one 95 gallon container in a week.

Cost & conditions
$90 for the published one time usage fee for a second garbage container, which the hauler requires to be paid at the time of the order. Lafayette Parish households on the hauler's residential service. A recycling cart carries no charge because the service is included in the monthly bill, and cart requests are fulfilled within three business days or can be collected in person at the hauler office.
Arrange it
Order the second container from the hauler and pay the one time fee when the order is placed, then set the cart out with the arrows on the lid pointing to the street.

The fee is paid once at order rather than added to the monthly bill, and the cart is sized at 95 gallons like the first one.

Dumpster rental or C and D landfill

A household or contractor with construction, remodeling, repair or demolition debris that the bulky pickup refuses.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no rate for either option because it does not collect the material, so confirm the container price with the rental company or the load price with the landfill, and call the Environmental Quality Division on 337-291-8529 for landfill locations.
Arrange it
Rent a container or load the material for the construction and demolition landfill, and separate out anything the facility will not take.

Construction debris, repair and demolition material, toilets and fencing are excluded from curbside collection, and the City recommends making a contractor responsible for removing the waste from work that is hired out.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Lafayette runs one weekly route through a parish contract, and four streams ride it on the same day: garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste. Household waste goes bagged in the black and red cart with the lid closed, yard waste goes out bagged or in a 40 gallon can under 50 pounds, and bulky waste covers the items that will not fit the cart, with appliances, furniture, televisions and up to five automobile tires a week all named. Curbside recycling reaches city residents and the parish drop off site on Carmel Drive covers the rest. What the curb will not take goes somewhere else: construction and remodeling debris goes to a rented dumpster or a construction and demolition landfill that the Environmental Quality Division can locate on 337-291-8529, and household chemicals wait for a Household Hazardous Waste Day that the City announces when it schedules one, since motor oil, antifreeze, automotive and rechargeable batteries, medicine, explosives and every electronic item are refused there as well. A new convenience center is planned for 400 Dugas Road to take garbage, bulky waste, construction debris, scrap metal, recyclables, electronics and tires from residents at no charge, but it is still under construction. Planned convenience center

Environmental Quality Convenience Center

400 Dugas Road, Lafayette, LA 70507

Garbage, bulky waste, construction debris, scrap metal, recycling material in metal, paper, plastic and glass, electronics, tires and other residential solid waste, according to the City's description of what residents can expect once the center opens.

The center is under construction and the City states that accepted materials and operating procedures may change before it opens, so nothing should be taken there yet. As planned, it would be for residential use only with no commercial waste, card payment only for non residential drop offs and no cash, residency verification at check in, and a limit of two visits a day and two days within a seven day period, with loads secured and covered in transport and residents unloading their own material.

Planned hours once open are Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. These are future hours, not current ones.

No charge. As planned, residents of the City of Lafayette and of unincorporated Lafayette Parish would use the center at no charge by presenting a valid driver's license and having active garbage service within the consolidated government's jurisdiction, while residents from outside those areas would pay a published per vehicle fee that is higher for a vehicle with a trailer.

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

What can go out as bulky waste?

Large items that will not fit in the 96 gallon cart, with appliances, furniture and televisions named among them, plus automobile tires at a maximum of five per week for residential use. Bagged items and anything small enough for the cart have to go inside the black and red container instead.Official guidance

How should the pile be placed?

At the curb before the service date, at least three feet from carts, mailboxes, yard waste piles and parked cars, with nothing overhead such as trees or utility lines and nothing blocking the truck's access. Items that are not reachable may not be collected.Official guidance

How does an appliance leave the house?

With the weekly bulky collection, because appliances are named in the City bulky item list and collected on the same day as garbage, recycling and yard waste. The household chemical event refuses appliances, furniture and televisions, so the curb is the route for those items.Official guidance

Where does a television go?

With the bulky collection, because televisions are named in the City bulky item list and picked up once a week on the same day as the rest of the route. The household chemical event refuses televisions of every kind, and the convenience center at Dugas Road, which expects to take electronics, is still under construction.Official guidance

Where do paint and chemicals go?

To a Household Hazardous Waste Day event, which the City announces when it schedules one, and which is open to residents of the City of Lafayette and unincorporated Lafayette Parish. Accepted material includes paint and paint products, thinner and stripper, stains, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, gasoline, fluorescent tubes and alkaline batteries.Official guidance

What does the hazardous waste event refuse?

Motor oil, antifreeze, PCB oil, automotive and rechargeable batteries, compressed gas cylinders, medicine, medical waste, radioactive material, explosives and ammunition, and all commercial waste. Appliances, furniture, televisions, CRT monitors, copiers and other electronic items are refused too, so those go out with the bulky collection instead.Official guidance

Who collects the waste in Lafayette?

Acadiana Waste Services collects for Lafayette Parish under contract with Lafayette Consolidated Government, running garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste on one weekly day. A resident inside the incorporated city limits signs up through Lafayette Utilities System on 337-291-8280, an unincorporated parish resident signs up with the hauler on 337-205-7710, and Lafayette 311 takes a missed collection or a cart problem.Official guidance

How do I find my collection day?

Use the City's interactive garbage and recycling schedule lookup and enter the address to see the weekly collection day. All four curbside streams run on that same day, so one lookup answers the question for garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky items.Official guidance

How do I get a recycling cart?

Register with the hauler by web form or phone on 337-205-7710, and the cart is free because the service is included in the monthly bill. Curbside recycling is available to city residents only, and a parish resident outside that area can bring recyclables to the hauler facility on Carmel Drive instead.Official guidance

Can tires go out with the trash?

Automobile tires can be collected as bulky items, with a five tire maximum per week and residential use only. They go out with the other bulky items on the weekly collection day, three feet clear of carts, mailboxes, parked cars and yard piles.Official guidance

Who do I call about an unusual item?

The Environmental Quality Division on 337-291-8529 handles household hazardous waste questions, gives construction and demolition landfill locations and information, and is the number the City publishes for anything that is not acceptable at the curb.Official guidance
