When & how
Go to the Department of Public Works at Lawrence City Hall to book the appointment, and bring proof of residency. The city also lists mattresses among the bulk items picked up on the same day as trash and recycling, but the mattress programme is the route with a published process, so use the in-person booking unless the Department of Public Works directs otherwise.
Get it ready
Have the bill, identification or driver's licence ready, because proof of residency is required when the appointment is made. Keep the mattress out of the 65-gallon container and out of the recycling bin, and keep it dry and clear of the collection path.
One 65-gallon container per unit, with overflow bags for the rest
Each housing unit is allocated a single 65-gallon container that has to be pre-approved by the city, with the contractor as the only provider, and hauling and disposal for that container is free of charge. Trash must be securely bagged inside it with the lid properly closed. Households needing more room can buy marked overflow bags with a 33-gallon capacity in packages of five, or buy an additional container, which only the property owner may purchase and which carries an annual service charge.
Bulk items ride the same day as trash and recycling, but only by appointment
Bulk items such as furniture and mattresses are collected on the same day as the trash and recycling pickup for the address, and scheduling runs through Capitol Waste Services on 1-844-377-1718 or the online booking page. The city's agreement with the hauler makes a number of smaller items free, limited to one per household per week, and prices everything else on the published list, with each additional item priced as well.
