Massachusetts has required mattresses and box springs to be recycled under 310 CMR 19.000 since November 1, 2022, so Haverhill runs two routes instead of a trash or bulky collection: a drop-off at the Recycling Center on Downing Avenue and a scheduled curbside pickup through the city's mattress contractor UTEC.

When & how
Take the piece to the Recycling Center at 95 Downing Avenue on a Wednesday or Saturday, or book the UTEC curbside pickup online and choose a date. The city says not to set a mattress or box spring out before the pickup is scheduled.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring out of the trash cart and off the bulky item list, because the city excludes both from that route. Keep the piece dry and reachable from the street, because UTEC will not enter a home or apartment and collects only standard mattresses and box springs, not couches, futons or appliances.
Set-out windows, cart placement and who is eligible
Nothing goes to the curb before 4:00 PM on the day before collection, everything has to be out by 6:00 AM on the collection day, and empty containers come back off the curb by 11:59 PM that night. Carts need about three feet of clearance from poles, mailboxes, hydrants, trees and parked cars, no more than five feet from the curb edge, with the lid arrows facing the street so the truck arm can service them. Single-family homes through eight-unit buildings are eligible for city collection, with one cart per unit, and a condominium complex already on dumpster service keeps that service.

Arrange it
Book and pay online at the UTEC mattress recycling page, then leave the piece curbside or within sight of the street by 7:00 AM on the pickup day, and do not set it out before the appointment is scheduled.
UTEC takes standard mattresses and box springs only, with an eight-piece limit per residential pickup, no collections on holidays, and a charge when a scheduled pickup is not cancelled at least 24 hours ahead or the item is no longer there.

Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, year round. Waste oil is taken only on the last Saturday of the month, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a five-gallon limit.

The city runs two household hazardous waste drop-offs a year for residents with proof of residency, on Saturday, March 21 and Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 40 South Porter Street from 9:00 AM until noon, with a limit of 25 gallons of liquid chemicals and 25 pounds of dry chemicals. The Recycling Center takes clothing and textiles free of charge, and the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation collects textiles at the curb free of charge on request at 508-466-4590, but the center refuses furniture, couches, dressers, shelving and small kitchen appliances.
