The local disposal guide
Lawrence contracts the work rather than running its own trucks. The city states that as of November 2022 it has contracted with Capitol Waste Services for residential solid waste, and that Capitol collects, hauls and disposes of all residential trash, recycling and yard waste. The curbside programme reaches residential buildings with six or fewer housing units, with weekly collection and the city cut into five sections, so buildings of seven units or more, businesses and mixed-use properties arrange their own private pickup. Each unit gets one 65-gallon container approved by the city, and each household can add capacity with marked overflow bags or a second container. What makes Lawrence unusually legible for large items is that the city publishes a priced bulk item list: furniture, appliances, televisions, exercise equipment and construction material all have a named price and a scheduling line, and a group of smaller items is free at one per household per week. Mattresses run on their own recycling programme, and the household hazardous waste day opens at the Department of Public Works yard on the second and fourth Saturday from May to October.

Televisions and computer monitors are priced on the city bulk item list, so Lawrence treats a screen as a collection item with a published rate instead of turning it away. A copy machine also appears on the same list, and the annual hazardous waste day is the second route for electronics.
Construction material is on the city price list by volume rather than refused outright. The bulk item list gives a per yard construction rate and also prices individual pieces such as a sheet of drywall, wood by the yard, metal doors, a sink, a toilet, a bathtub and a vanity, which makes a small remodel load a scheduled collection rather than a container job.
Exercise equipment is priced on the city bulk item list, which names bikes and treadmills, and a trampoline, swing and basketball backboard also carry their own prices. That puts a treadmill or weight machine on the same scheduled route as furniture.

Yard waste is collected during the spring, summer and fall on the same day as trash and recycling, with the schedule shifting through the year. Material goes in paper bags or in containers clearly labeled for yard waste, and small bundles of branches and sticks may go out loose only if they meet every one of the city's bundle conditions.
The city runs an annual hazardous waste recycling day rather than a standing drop-off. It opens from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from May to October, at the Department of Public Works yard on Auburn Street, and the city prohibits unscheduled visits outside those hours.
The handoff matters
Each housing unit is allocated a single 65-gallon container that has to be pre-approved by the city, with the contractor as the only provider, and hauling and disposal for that container is free of charge. Trash must be securely bagged inside it with the lid properly closed. Households needing more room can buy marked overflow bags with a 33-gallon capacity in packages of five, or buy an additional container, which only the property owner may purchase and which carries an annual service charge.

Capitol Waste Services collects under a city contract. The city states that as of November 2022 it contracted with Capitol for residential solid waste, and that Capitol handles collection, hauling and disposal for all residential trash, recycling and yard waste under a multi-year agreement. No. The curbside programme serves residential buildings with six or fewer housing units, so residential buildings with seven or more units, businesses and mixed-use properties including apartment units over a business have to arrange private pickup. Inside the covered buildings, each unit gets one 65-gallon container approved by the city, with hauling and disposal for that container free of charge.Official guidance
Paper, newspaper, cardboard, plastic, clean food cans, aluminum cans and glass can all go in one bin, but the city asks residents to keep plastic bags, plastic wrap, food leftovers, pizza boxes, textiles, anything that tangles, styrofoam and bulky items out. Materials have to be raw and clean, and the city supplies a green Lawrence Recycles sticker for any barrel or bin used at home.Official guidance
There are two routes. Households can buy marked overflow bags with a 33-gallon capacity in packages of five from the Department of Public Works or from the two named stores, tying them tightly and setting them neatly beside the barrel on pickup day, or they can buy an additional 65-gallon container, which only the property owner may purchase and which carries an annual service charge and has to be surrendered when the property is sold.Official guidance
