Ready for it to go

The old sofa can stop holding up your plans.

You know it needs to go. The price, the pickup day and knowing it is done should be easy to settle, too.

A replacement is on the way.

Give the old couch its own pickup day. Check what your retailer will remove, then book the part you still need handled.

The move has enough moving parts.

You do not need a whole room to clear. Book the sofa, recliner or sectional that needs to go, and follow the pickup through updates and photos.

The right sofa. The right price.

Count the sections, not the cushions.

A loveseat, a sleeper and a sectional can look similar in a photo. Match the shape and features so your online price covers what is actually going.

Three structural sectional modules slightly separated, with all cushions remaining on their bases.
This example has three structural sections. The cushions do not add to the count.

A straight sofa or loveseat

Choose Standard sofa for fixed seats with no pull-out bed or reclining mechanism. One whole sofa is one item.

A sectional

Count its structural sections, not the loose cushions. Choose the piece count, then check for a sleeper or reclining feature. One sectional booking covers the configuration you select.

A pull-out bed or reclining seats

Choose Sleeper sofa or Reclining sofa for those mechanisms. A single reclining chair has its own Recliner choice. All sofa types also includes futons and sofas with a chaise.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Special rules apply

A couch or other furniture piece is not part of the weekly bagged trash route, because only bagged trash inside a lidded barrel is collected and large pieces are handled as exceptions through the city's Waste Wizard. Malden publishes no furniture item list, count or price on the trash pages.

City cost & eligibility
No city price is published for furniture. Confirm the piece and any charge with the Department of Public Works at 781-397-7160 before it is moved to the curb.
When & how
Look the piece up in the city's Waste Wizard and then call the Department of Public Works, which answers Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to set the collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the furniture out of the barrel set out, because the normal route collects only bagged trash in a lidded barrel, and keep mattresses and box springs out of the same pile because the state ban moved them to a separate vendor route.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Trash goes out in a covered barrel with a valid bag or trash tag

Trash has to sit in a lidded barrel with the lid completely closed and be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the pickup day. Each bag is either a blue pay-as-you-throw bag from the city or, in a city black barrel carrying the current year trash tag, a standard store-bought bag of 13 gallon or larger with no loose trash, a lid that closes and no more than 35 pounds in the barrel. The city is running a tagging and education period on barrels that do not meet the rules, and fines can follow once that period ends.

Mattresses and box springs left the bulk policy in November 2022

The state disposal ban that took effect on November 1, 2022 removed mattresses and box springs from the waste stream, and Malden states that the city bulk item policy can no longer be used for either one. The city publishes a list of authorized vendors and says that disposing of a mattress without one is prohibited by law, so the unit is booked with a vendor rather than set out with the trash.

City of Malden Department of Public Works

Look the item up in the city's Waste Wizard

A household with a bulk item, a white good, a piece of furniture or an exercise machine that is too large for the weekly barrel.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no price for these items. The Waste Wizard gives the route, and the Department of Public Works confirms any charge at 781-397-7160.
Arrange it
Search the item in the Waste Wizard, then call the Department of Public Works during its Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours to arrange the collection day.

The normal weekly route takes only bagged trash inside a lidded barrel, so an item that is not confirmed with the city is left at the curb.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Malden's own routes are the weekly curbside pickup and the DPW Yard at 356 Commercial Street. Yard waste can be dropped at the yard on Saturdays, but the city alert says the yard is closed to dumping Monday through Friday for the Malden River Works construction period and that only yard waste may be dropped on Saturdays, so the yard waste page and the alert publish different Saturday windows and the window is worth confirming by phone. Electronics are refused in the blue recycling cart and the city's flyer points them to the yard for electronic waste recycling, which happens on the designated household hazardous waste collection days where the published fee list prices cathode ray tubes, tires, batteries, oil and paint by item or volume and takes cash only. At the time of this check the city page showed no upcoming hazardous waste day scheduled. Anything the weekly barrel cannot take, such as a bulk item, a white good, furniture or an exercise machine, is an exception the city resolves through its Waste Wizard lookup and its Department of Public Works number, and a mattress or box spring has to go to an authorized vendor that the city lists. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Couch removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Malden.

How much does couch removal cost in Malden?

A standard sofa is $79 as the first item and $29 additional. Sectionals, sleepers and reclining sofas have their own choices. Select everything that is going to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax appears before payment.

Can you pick up my couch today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the couch outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We send pickup updates and photos when it is done; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

How do I book a sectional for removal?

Open Sectional in the sofa choices, count its structural sections, and select any sleeper or reclining feature. Count the sections with their own bases, not loose cushions. The matching catalog choice covers one complete sectional of that configuration. Text a photo before booking if you are unsure.

Will you carry my couch out of my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. Arrange for the sofa to be moved through the apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load and haul it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Arrange any dismantling needed to get it outside beforehand.

Do I need to wait at home for couch pickup?

You do not need to be home when your booked sofa is outside and accessible. Add photos and pickup-location notes to your order so the right pieces are easy to identify. We send updates and completion photos. Confirm any building access restrictions with us before booking.

Will Malden take a couch on the normal trash day?

Not as ordinary trash. The weekly route collects only bagged trash inside a lidded barrel with a valid bag or trash tag, and the city treats furniture as one of the exceptions to normal pickup that it resolves through its Waste Wizard. Confirm the piece with the Department of Public Works at 781-397-7160 first.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Malden?

The City of Malden Department of Public Works runs weekly trash and recycling collection for residential buildings of six units or less, and buildings with more than six units and commercial properties have to arrange private pickup. Qualifying homes get one free trash barrel and one free recycling barrel, and the department answers at 781-397-7160 at 356 Commercial Street.Official guidance

What do I need to set trash out in Malden?

A lidded barrel with the lid fully closed, at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, with every bag either a blue pay-as-you-throw bag or a standard bag inside a city black barrel carrying the current year trash tag. The tag is good on the 35 gallon city cart only, asks for bags of 13 gallon or larger, and caps the load at 35 pounds, and the city is running a tagging and education period on barrels that do not comply.Official guidance

Who can take a mattress in Malden?

An authorized vendor from the city's published list, because the state ban ended the bulk item route for mattresses and box springs. The city names ABH Services of Malden, Classic Cleanouts of Malden, HandUp, Junk Dispatch of Saugus and Marvin Junk Removal, says it has no direct business arrangement with them, and states that disposing of a mattress without an authorized vendor is prohibited by law.Official guidance
