Televisions and computer monitors are the exception, because the centre charges a per item drop-off fee and requires proof of payment at the gate.

Get it ready
Wipe personal data from any computer, laptop, tablet or phone before handover. Remove the batteries and tape the terminals, keep electronics out of both carts, and note that styrofoam is accepted only by drop-off at the resource centre, so it should not go in the recycling cart.
Carts go out by 7 a.m., or after 4 p.m. the day before
Both the blue trash cart and the green recycling cart go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, or as early as 4 p.m. the day before. Each cart sits within three feet of the curb with the wheels and handle facing the house and the lid opening toward the street, and at least three feet from parked cars, hydrants, poles, trees, bulky waste, other carts and mailboxes. No material outside the cart is collected, and an obstructed cart may be rejected.
Bulky items are the single non-recyclable pieces too large for the blue cart, collected at a per item price. Whitegoods covers appliances, scrap metal, electronics and large rigid plastic, collected at another per item price with a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center apart from televisions and monitors. Mattresses and box springs are a third route with their own prices, because the state banned their disposal. Booking the right route is what keeps a pickup from being refused.

Appliances, electronics and metal items at no cost apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a per item fee, and mattresses and box springs at a lower per item price than the curbside collection. The centre also runs the seasonal latex paint exchange, taking usable latex paint in cans less than ten years old and more than half full.
Proof of payment is required at the gate for televisions, monitors, mattresses and box springs, and the receipt quantity has to match the load. The paint shed is kept locked and every drop-off has to be approved by the attendant, and unusable paint has to be dried out and put in the trash instead. The centre is drive-through only at some events, with residents staying in their cars, and it can flood and close temporarily after heavy rain or snow.
June 1 to September 27: Tuesday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed Mondays, Sundays, holidays and occasionally during heavy rain. The city prints only the summer window on this page, so call customer service on 617-796-1000 for the other months and after a storm. The paint exchange runs from May to October and is closed on Saturdays.

When will my paid pickup happen?+
Payments received by 10 p.m. on Sunday are arranged for the Thursday of the following week, unless that Thursday carries a trash delay. The city emails within one to two business days to confirm, sends a reminder on the business day before the collection, and sends a confirmation after it is done.
