Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are whitegoods, so they ride the same route as appliances at the same per item price, and the drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center is free for them apart from the two screen items. Televisions and computer monitors are the exception, because the centre charges a per item drop-off fee and requires proof of payment at the gate.

City cost & eligibility
$25 per e-waste item on the Newton curbside whitegoods collection, and the Resource Recovery Center takes e-waste at no cost apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a $25 drop-off fee each. Newton households entitled to city collection, paid online in advance; proof of payment for a television or monitor has to be presented to the attendant at the drop-off.
When & how
Pay online and collection is arranged for the Thursday of the following week when payment clears by 10 p.m. on Sunday, or pay the television or monitor fee first and take the device to the Resource Recovery Center during its open hours. The centre closes temporarily after heavy rain or snow, so calling customer service on 617-796-1000 first is worthwhile.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from any computer, laptop, tablet or phone before handover. Remove the batteries and tape the terminals, keep electronics out of both carts, and note that styrofoam is accepted only by drop-off at the resource centre, so it should not go in the recycling cart.

Carts go out by 7 a.m., or after 4 p.m. the day before

Both the blue trash cart and the green recycling cart go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, or as early as 4 p.m. the day before. Each cart sits within three feet of the curb with the wheels and handle facing the house and the lid opening toward the street, and at least three feet from parked cars, hydrants, poles, trees, bulky waste, other carts and mailboxes. No material outside the cart is collected, and an obstructed cart may be rejected.

Newton sorts large items into three priced routes

Bulky items are the single non-recyclable pieces too large for the blue cart, collected at a per item price. Whitegoods covers appliances, scrap metal, electronics and large rigid plastic, collected at another per item price with a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center apart from televisions and monitors. Mattresses and box springs are a third route with their own prices, because the state banned their disposal. Booking the right route is what keeps a pickup from being refused.

Book a whitegoods pickup or drop the item at the Resource Recovery Center

A household with an appliance, a metal item, an electronic device, a large rigid plastic item or a piece of exercise equipment.

Cost & conditions
$25 per item on the Newton curbside whitegoods collection, with the Resource Recovery Center drop-off at no cost for appliances, electronics and metal items apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a $25 drop-off fee each. Newton households entitled to city collection, paid online in advance; proof of payment for a television or monitor has to be shown to the attendant at the drop-off.
Arrange it
Pay online for the curbside whitegoods pickup, or pay any television or monitor fee and take the item to the Resource Recovery Center, checking in with the attendant. The centre can close temporarily after heavy rain or snow, so calling customer service on 617-796-1000 first is worthwhile.

Fluids must be drained from a lawn mower or snow blower, refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed with drawers secured, and basketball hoops have to arrive in two pieces for a curbside pickup while goal frames have to be disassembled. Batteries have to be removed from electronics and the terminals taped.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Newton means the Resource Recovery Center at 115 Rumford Ave in Auburndale, and the price depends on what arrives. Appliances, electronics and metal items are taken there at no cost, except that televisions and monitors carry a per item fee and the proof of payment has to be handed to the attendant at the gate. Mattresses and box springs cost less to drop off than to have collected, and again the receipt quantity has to match the load because each mattress and each box spring counts separately and a split box spring counts twice. The center also runs a seasonal latex paint exchange from May to October, with a locked shed and an attendant who has to approve every drop-off, and usable latex paint means cans less than ten years old that are more than half full, while unusable paint has to be dried out and put in the trash. The summer hours run June 1 to September 27, Tuesday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the site closed Mondays, Sundays, holidays and occasionally when heavy rain floods it, so call customer service on 617-796-1000 for the other months and before setting out after a storm. Household hazardous waste is the one stream that does not have a standing drop-off at all, because the city only takes it at designated collection events and sends a resident who cannot attend to a licensed hazardous waste handler. City Resource Recovery Center page with the seasonal latex paint exchange from May to October that is not open on Saturdays, the locked shed and attendant approval rule, the conditions for usable latex paint and the drying instruction for unusable cans, the flooding closure and customer service number, and the drive-through only event rules with residents remaining in their carsCity bulky item decision tree with the bulky item definition, the per item counting rules for carpet and scrap wood rolls, futon frames and mattresses, sectional couches and sleeper sofas, wooden bed frames and dismantled wooden furniture, skis and vacuum cleaners, the cardboard exclusion, the 150 pound per item weight limit, the per item curbside bulky price with the Sunday payment cut off and the Thursday collection slot, the refund policy, the whitegoods category with its per item curbside price and free centre drop-off apart from televisions and monitors, the full whitegoods item list covering large appliances, metal items, lawn and snow equipment with fluids removed, exercise equipment, tires and electronics, and the mattress and box spring rule with the state disposal ban, the accepted mattress types, the one item counting for a mattress and a box spring and two items for a split box spring, and the curbside and drop-off prices with the proof of payment requirementCity recycle at the curb page with the single stream programme and lookup tool, the 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. set out window, the three feet of curb and object clearance rules with the lid orientation, the ban on material outside the cart, the cardboard flattening rule, the styrofoam drop-off rule, the free additional green cart request, the whitegoods definition and its no cost drop-off apart from the television and monitor fee with proof of payment, the Mass Save refrigerator and freezer pickup and rebate with the door removal and drawer securing rule, the curbside textile collection by appointment, and the state mattress disposal banCity household hazardous waste page with the designated collection event model, the rule that drop-offs outside those times are not accepted, the note that some formerly hazardous products can go in the regular trash, and the requirement to contact a licensed hazardous waste handler if a resident cannot attend an event

City drop-off for whitegoods, mattresses, paint and recyclable material

Newton Resource Recovery Center

115 Rumford Ave, Auburndale, MA 02466

Appliances, electronics and metal items at no cost apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a per item fee, and mattresses and box springs at a lower per item price than the curbside collection. The centre also runs the seasonal latex paint exchange, taking usable latex paint in cans less than ten years old and more than half full.

Proof of payment is required at the gate for televisions, monitors, mattresses and box springs, and the receipt quantity has to match the load. The paint shed is kept locked and every drop-off has to be approved by the attendant, and unusable paint has to be dried out and put in the trash instead. The centre is drive-through only at some events, with residents staying in their cars, and it can flood and close temporarily after heavy rain or snow.

June 1 to September 27: Tuesday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed Mondays, Sundays, holidays and occasionally during heavy rain. The city prints only the summer window on this page, so call customer service on 617-796-1000 for the other months and after a storm. The paint exchange runs from May to October and is closed on Saturdays.

There is no standing receipt fee for what is accepted here, and the prices that do apply, the $25 television and monitor fee and the $35 mattress and box spring drop-off fee, are published on the bulky item decision tree instead, so confirm the item and any charge on 617-796-1000 before loading.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Newton.

How much does TV removal cost in Newton?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Newton?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where do televisions go in Newton?

Televisions are whitegoods items, so they are collected curbside at the per item whitegoods price, and they can also be dropped off at the Resource Recovery Center. The centre charges a per item drop-off fee for televisions and monitors rather than taking them free, and proof of payment has to be presented to the attendant at the gate. The centre can close temporarily after heavy rain or snow, so calling 617-796-1000 first is worthwhile.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Newton?

The Department of Public Works collects it under its Sustainable Materials Management division, with one blue trash cart and one green recycling cart for a household that is entitled to city service. Businesses, institutions and many multi-family properties are not entitled to city collection and have to arrange private service, and a nonprofit can apply for collection for a fee under the city ordinance, limited to four sets of carts per address. Customer service is on 617-796-1000.Official guidance

Which large item route does my piece use?

It depends on the material. A non-recyclable piece too large for the blue cart, such as a couch or a dismantled wooden furniture item, is a bulky item. An appliance, a metal item, an electronic device or a large rigid plastic item is whitegoods, which has its own price and a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center apart from televisions and monitors. A mattress or box spring is a third route with its own prices because the state bans its disposal, and construction material is not a bulky item at all.Official guidance

When will my paid pickup happen?

Payments received by 10 p.m. on Sunday are arranged for the Thursday of the following week, unless that Thursday carries a trash delay. The city emails within one to two business days to confirm, sends a reminder on the business day before the collection, and sends a confirmation after it is done. Items go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and a cancellation only earns a refund when it is processed with a cancellation email by 10 a.m. on the business day before.Official guidance
