Newton households entitled to city collection, paid online in advance, with payments received by 10 p.m. on Sunday arranged for the Thursday of the following week unless there is a trash delay on that Thursday.

The local disposal guide
Newton collects household waste itself and sorts the awkward items into three separate streams, each with its own price. Household trash goes in a blue 64-gallon cart and recycling in a green cart, with the same placement rules for both. Anything too large for the blue cart and not recyclable through a city programme is a bulky item, collected at a per item price, and the city counts whole groups of pieces as one item, so a sectional couch with its loose cushions counts once and a dismantled wooden furniture piece counts once. Appliances, scrap metal, electronics and large rigid plastic travel on a separate whitegoods route with its own price and a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center, apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a drop-off fee. Mattresses and box springs are a third route entirely, because Massachusetts banned their disposal, so they are collected or dropped off at higher prices. Businesses, institutions and many multi-family buildings have to arrange private collection instead.

Electronics are whitegoods, so they ride the same route as appliances at the same per item price, and the drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center is free for them apart from the two screen items. Televisions and computer monitors are the exception, because the centre charges a per item drop-off fee and requires proof of payment at the gate.
Newton keeps construction material out of the bulky item route. The city states that overflow trash and construction materials are not bulky waste, and it publishes a separate construction and demolition list rather than folding a remodel load into the per item collection.
Exercise equipment is named on the whitegoods list, which spells out a treadmill, an elliptical, a stationary bike and a weight bench. That puts a machine on the same per item curbside route as an appliance, with the free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center as the alternative.

Massachusetts bans yard waste from disposal, and Newton enforces it at the cart. Putting yard waste in the blue trash cart or the green recycling cart may bring a rejection, and material in plastic bags or flexible containers, or over the weight limit, is refused. Natural Christmas trees are the one seasonal exception the city collects.
Newton handles household hazardous waste through designated collection events rather than a standing drop-off, and the city states that drop-offs outside those times are not accepted. Some products that were once treated as hazardous can now go in the regular trash, and a resident who cannot reach an event is directed to a licensed hazardous waste handler.
The handoff matters
Both the blue trash cart and the green recycling cart go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, or as early as 4 p.m. the day before. Each cart sits within three feet of the curb with the wheels and handle facing the house and the lid opening toward the street, and at least three feet from parked cars, hydrants, poles, trees, bulky waste, other carts and mailboxes. No material outside the cart is collected, and an obstructed cart may be rejected.

Because Massachusetts banned mattress and box spring disposal, so Newton has to recycle them rather than landfill them. The city runs a curbside mattress collection at a per item price and a lower priced drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center, and it accepts traditional, inner spring, latex, memory foam and mattress in a box products in all sizes. Each mattress counts as one item, each box spring counts as one item, and a split box spring counts as two items.Official guidance
A refrigerator is a whitegoods item, so it is collected curbside at the per item whitegoods price or dropped off at the Resource Recovery Center at no cost. The city asks for all refrigerator and freezer doors removed and drawers secured before the unit is set out. The sponsors of Mass Save also offer no-cost pickup and removal plus a rebate to residential electric customers who recycle a refrigerator or freezer.Official guidance
Televisions are whitegoods items, so they are collected curbside at the per item whitegoods price, and they can also be dropped off at the Resource Recovery Center. The centre charges a per item drop-off fee for televisions and monitors rather than taking them free, and proof of payment has to be presented to the attendant at the gate. The centre can close temporarily after heavy rain or snow, so calling 617-796-1000 first is worthwhile.Official guidance
By the group, not the piece. One couch counts as one item including all sections of a sectional and the loose cushions, a sleeper sofa counts as one, all pieces of a wooden bed frame count as one, a dismantled wooden furniture item counts as one, and a tied roll or bundle of carpet or scrap wood under four feet and fifty pounds counts as one. The limit is 150 pounds per item, and heavier pieces need privately contracted service.Official guidance
The Department of Public Works collects it under its Sustainable Materials Management division, with one blue trash cart and one green recycling cart for a household that is entitled to city service. Businesses, institutions and many multi-family properties are not entitled to city collection and have to arrange private service, and a nonprofit can apply for collection for a fee under the city ordinance, limited to four sets of carts per address. Customer service is on 617-796-1000.Official guidance
It depends on the material. A non-recyclable piece too large for the blue cart, such as a couch or a dismantled wooden furniture item, is a bulky item. An appliance, a metal item, an electronic device or a large rigid plastic item is whitegoods, which has its own price and a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center apart from televisions and monitors. A mattress or box spring is a third route with its own prices because the state bans its disposal, and construction material is not a bulky item at all.Official guidance
Payments received by 10 p.m. on Sunday are arranged for the Thursday of the following week, unless that Thursday carries a trash delay. The city emails within one to two business days to confirm, sends a reminder on the business day before the collection, and sends a confirmation after it is done. Items go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and a cancellation only earns a refund when it is processed with a cancellation email by 10 a.m. on the business day before.Official guidance
Yes. Smaller 35-gallon carts are available on request through customer service on 617-796-1000, and the swap can apply to both carts or to the trash cart alone, but the city does not allow a smaller recycling cart with a larger trash cart. A household whose green recycling cart overflows most weeks can request an additional green cart at no cost. Overflow bags set beside the trash cart must not contain recyclables or hazardous material.Official guidance
