When & how
Pay online, and the curbside collection is arranged for the Thursday of the following week when payment clears by 10 p.m. on Sunday unless there is a trash delay. For the drop-off, pay first, take the item to the Resource Recovery Center, and check in with the attendant with proof of payment.
Get it ready
Count the load correctly before paying, because a mattress and a box spring are two items and a split box spring is two items on its own. Keep the mattress out of the trash cart, note that futon mattresses and sleeper sofas are handled as bulky waste rather than as mattresses, and consider selling or donating a mattress in good condition first, which the city encourages.
Bulky items are the single non-recyclable pieces too large for the blue cart, collected at a per item price. Appliances, electronics and metal items at no cost apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a per item fee, and mattresses and box springs at a lower per item price than the curbside collection. The centre also runs the seasonal latex paint exchange, taking usable latex paint in cans less than ten years old and more than half full.
Proof of payment is required at the gate for televisions, monitors, mattresses and box springs, and the receipt quantity has to match the load. The paint shed is kept locked and every drop-off has to be approved by the attendant, and unusable paint has to be dried out and put in the trash instead. The centre is drive-through only at some events, with residents staying in their cars, and it can flood and close temporarily after heavy rain or snow.
June 1 to September 27: Tuesday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed Mondays, Sundays, holidays and occasionally during heavy rain. The city prints only the summer window on this page, so call customer service on 617-796-1000 for the other months and after a storm. The paint exchange runs from May to October and is closed on Saturdays.
