A few pieces, one pickup

Your room has changed. The old furniture can go.

The desk you no longer use. The dresser that doesn’t fit the new layout. The chairs left over after a move. Choose the pieces you’re done with and give them a pickup day, without arranging a quote visit.

Choose each piece

A table and four chairs are five items.

You don’t need to guess how much space your furniture fills in a truck. Match each piece to the catalog, then add its quantity. Your total updates as you go.

Tables and chairs

Choose the table, then add each chair separately. Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables have their own options. A large or substantially heavy table has a different choice.

Dressers and mirrors

Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.

Desks and bookshelves

Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

Bulky items and the weekly allowance

Accepted with preparation

Two bulky items may go out each week, and the city names sofas, chairs, recliners and lawn furniture as the kind of piece the curbside crew will take.

City cost & eligibility
The city pages publish no bulky item fee, so confirm the allowance and any charge with the Waste and Recycling Division at (617) 376-1957 before setting a piece out.
When & how
Two bulky items per week on the regular collection day. Carpet goes out only when it is cut into 3 foot lengths, rolled and tied, with no more than 5 rolls at a time.
Get it ready
Keep each piece within the two item allowance and under the 50 lb lift limit the collectors work to. Small amounts of wood are allowed when they are bundled and tied, only 1 to 3 inches in diameter and under 3 feet long, in a barrel weighing under 50 lbs. Anything the crew will not take has to go to the DPW Yard or a private hauler.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture goes out with the bulky allowance, and the division states that curbside pickup of furniture is collected without calling ahead.

City cost & eligibility
No furniture fee is published, so confirm whether the piece fits the two item weekly allowance and whether anything is charged by calling the Waste and Recycling Division at (617) 376-1957.
When & how
Put the piece out on the regular collection day as one of the two bulky items for that week, with nothing out more than one day before collection.
Get it ready
Keep the piece off the sidewalk and within the crew's 50 lb lift limit, and take cushions and loose parts off so the frame can be handled. A piece that is still usable can also go to one of the charities the city lists, such as Viet Nam Veterans on (800) 775-8387 or the Salvation Army on (617) 542-5420.

Self haul in Quincy means the DPW Yard at 55 Sea Street, which is for Quincy residents only. It opens Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturday 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM inside the published 2026 season window from April 4, 2026 through December 5, 2026, and it takes yard waste, single stream recycling, textiles, electronics, all scrap metal, appliances other than refrigerators and dishwashers, books, CDs, DVDs and mercury items such as thermometers, thermostats, rechargeable batteries and fluorescent bulbs. A valid Massachusetts driver's licence is required, commercial plates need prior written approval from the Commissioner's Office, and the yard refuses household trash, wood, tires, oil and gasoline, latex and oil paint, chemicals and construction debris. Construction and demolition debris therefore has to go to a private hauler or to one of the two stations the city names, Champion City Recovery at 138 Wilder St. in Brockton on (508) 941-6700 or Stoughton Recycling Technologies at 100 Page Blvd. in Stoughton on (781) 341-9920, both with a call for pricing and scheduling. Hazardous material that the yard will not take waits for one of the city's two yearly household hazardous waste drop-off days at the yard, which are for Quincy residents only, with oil based paint, fuels, pool chemicals, solvents and mercury items accepted and tires, latex paint, asbestos and prescription medicines refused; the same items can also be discussed with Clean Harbors on (781) 380-7100.
