Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture, carpet, wood and metal are named in the bulky item allowance, so one piece leaves with the weekly refuse and anything larger goes to the Smiths Creek Landfill, which accepts furniture and charges by the cubic yard for larger loads.
A stove, refrigerator, washer or dryer is named in the city's bulky item allowance, so one appliance goes out with the weekly refuse. The city asks that refrigerator doors come off before the unit is set out, and the contractor provides that removal.
The curbside recycling list covers paper, metal, plastic and glass only, so televisions and other electronics do not belong in the bin. St. Clair County runs an electronic recycling program with Community Enterprises at its Smiths Creek environmental services site.
Material from major construction, remodeling, repair or demolition is on the city's list of items that are not collected at the curb, and earth and waste from building operations are excluded from the rubbish the city takes. The Smiths Creek Landfill accepts construction and demolition debris instead.
Exercise equipment is not named in the city's list, but the allowance covers any solid waste with more weight and volume than container collection allows, and the rules refuse anything larger than the collection trucks handle. One piece can go out as the weekly bulky item.
Port Huron allows one bulky item per household each week beside the refuse, with mattresses, appliances, furniture, carpet, wood and metal among the named examples. A move-out or clean-out is larger than that allowance, so the load goes to the Smiths Creek Landfill.
The handoff matters
Collection starts at 7 a.m., and everything has to be at the curb before then and no earlier than 4 p.m. of the day before. Emptied containers come in from the street before sundown on the collection day, and the crew does not come back for a late set-out.
