Mattresses are named on the city's oversized item list, so a mattress or box spring goes out beside the rubbish containers with the regular collection. The one added requirement is health related: a mattress with bed bugs must be wrapped and contained in plastic before it is set out.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Collected with the weekly curbside service at no separate charge, because the city guideline lists mattresses with the oversized items placed beside the rubbish containers and publishes no mattress fee.
When & how
Set the mattress next to the containers on your normal collection day, out by 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m. the evening before.
Get it ready
Keep it flat and dry, wrap and contain it in plastic if it has bed bugs, and keep it clear of the cart and of the compost pile so each collection can reach its own material.
Refuse and compost go to the grass at the curb by 6 a.m. or no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before the scheduled collection, and until then the carts and bags stay at the side of the house or in the rear yard. The carts have to be three feet apart with the lids closed and nothing protruding from the top, and a compost pile is placed five feet from the rest of the garbage. When a holiday falls in the week, collection runs a day late for the rest of that week.
Furniture and mattresses are set neatly beside the rubbish containers rather than inside them, and a mattress with bed bugs has to be wrapped and contained in plastic first. Carpets and padding are cut, rolled and tied securely in four foot lengths. A refrigerator or freezer is emptied and its doors removed, with the freon left in place. An air conditioner or dehumidifier is different: the freon has to be removed by a licensed refrigerant recovery or heating and cooling company and a sticker proving the work has to be attached to the appliance before the crew can collect it.
