Televisions, monitors, computers and other electronics
Accepted with preparation
Electronics are illegal in the trash and are not collected in the recycling cart. The county station takes televisions, computer monitors and laptops by the piece and most other electronics at no charge with a limit of five of the same type a year. The city drop-off day charges a lower flat price for computers, monitors and televisions and takes other electronics free, and Bridging and Repowered are the reuse and certified recycling alternatives.
City cost & eligibility
$10 each television, computer monitor or laptop accepted at the Hennepin County Recycling and Transfer Station. Hennepin County households, with proof of residency. Other electronics are accepted there at no charge, with a limit of five of the same type per household each year, and the county also takes cords, string lights and media such as discs, flash drives and game cartridges from households.
When & how
The county station opens Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and is closed Sunday, Monday and the holidays the county lists. The city drop-off day takes computers, monitors and televisions on its posted Saturday with other electronics free, and Repowered opens its recycling drop-off Monday through Friday and on the second and fourth Saturday.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data off a computer, phone, tablet or drive before handover. Keep electronics out of the garbage and recycling carts, where batteries, cords, cables and tanglers are refused, and take batteries to the county station, which asks for clear tape on the terminals or a clear plastic bag. The free county allowance covers five items of the same type a year.
The cart goes to the curb by 6:30 am on the service day and is picked up no later than 6:30 pm. Recycling runs every other week and garbage runs on the schedule your licensed hauler keeps. Containers may be set out after 3 pm the day before and have to be back inside or behind an approved screen by the end of the pickup day, because containers stored in public view are a code violation.
All garbage has to be wrapped or bagged and covered inside the container your licensed hauler supplies, and a container that is not large enough calls for a larger or second cart from that hauler rather than bags beside it. Recycling is single-sort and goes in loose, never in plastic bags, and a cart holding something the program does not take is not the place to hide a bulky item.
Electronics, appliances and hazardous waste never go in the trash
The city states it is illegal to put electronics, appliances and household hazardous waste in the trash, and none of it belongs in the curbside recycling cart. Those items go to the Hennepin County Recycling and Transfer Station on Jefferson Highway, which takes county households with proof of residency, charges by the item for televisions, appliances, mattresses and tires, and keeps its own weekday hours.
Brooklyn Park code enforcement treats a pile of junk, debris, garbage, litter or hazardous waste, including yard waste and animal waste, as a violation, and all garbage has to stay inside a container with a tight-fitting lid. Between the cleanup date and a hauler pickup, a bulky item belongs in a garage or another out-of-sight spot rather than at the curb or in the yard.

Cost & conditions
Every hauler sets its own charge for large items, special items and extra garbage, and the city publishes a worksheet for comparing them rather than a rate. Call the hauler on your account and ask for the large item and special item price, along with any fuel surcharge, before the pickup is booked.
Arrange it
Brooklyn Park requires every household to choose and set up its own service with a licensed hauler. The city lists Ace Solid Waste, Curbside Waste, Republic Services, Walters and Waste Management with their addresses and phone numbers, and residents call the hauler directly to schedule a bulky or special item pickup.
Prices, accepted items and limits differ by company, and the city does not publish them. Cart delivery and removal fees, fuel surcharges and other surcharges are set by each hauler as well, so the same pile can cost different amounts through different companies.

Stations are laid out for paper, mattresses, electronics, oil and antifreeze, tires, batteries, appliances and scrap metal, so packing the vehicle in reverse station order speeds up unloading.
Furniture, garbage, carpet and pads, exercise equipment, lamps, lawn furniture, leaf blowers, light bulbs, paint, railroad ties, toasters and general trash are not accepted. Payment is cash or check only, and the event runs on a posted date rather than year round.

No charge. The city Material Reuse Donation Day takes accepted reusable items free at 8300 Noble Avenue North, and Bridging takes accepted drop-off donations free with no appointment during warehouse hours. Partners refuse anything that is not reusable or recyclable.

Only listed items in reusable condition are taken. Couches, loveseats and ottomans have to be 90 inches or shorter with no sleeper, powered or reclining mechanism, mattresses and box springs have to be stain and rip free in standard sizes, and appliances, toilets, paint, aerosols, electronics, garbage and recyclables are refused at the city reuse day.

Garbage, ammunition, asbestos, carpet, concrete or asphalt, construction materials, explosives, furniture, medicines, non-reusable textiles, remodeling debris, wood and yard and tree waste are not accepted. Mattresses and box springs are taken at the Brooklyn Park Transfer Station only, and fluorescent bulbs are limited to 25 a year.

Furniture within the published sizes, including metal freestanding bed frames with hardware, chairs without powered or wheeled types, couches, loveseats and ottomans 90 inches or smaller, desks 42 by 24 inches or smaller, dressers 65 inches or smaller, kitchen and dining tables within the listed sizes, complete futons, nightstands and coffee tables, TV stands and media consoles up to 36 inches tall, and wood furniture and bookcases up to 72 by 36 inches. Mattresses and box springs that are stain and rip free in twin standard and XL, full, queen and king, plus housewares and linens, and small appliances and electronics including countertop microwaves, fans, lamps and flat panel televisions 65 inches or smaller.
Items must be clean, fully functioning and free of rips, stains, strong odors and pet hair, and anything not on the published list is not accepted. Sleeper, powered and reclining sofas, headboards, footboards, wooden rails, plastic box springs, mattress toppers, cribs, cots, electrical beds, bunk beds, trundle beds, rollaways, air and camper mattresses, ceiling fans, older tube televisions and large appliances are refused.
Plymouth is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bloomington and Roseville are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All are closed Sundays and major holidays.
