Major appliances are recycled at the county drop-off for a published per unit fee that depends on whether the unit holds refrigerant, and appliances are named as waste that cannot go in the mixed garbage cart.
City cost & eligibility
From $10 per household-size appliance without refrigerant at the Olmsted County Recycling Center Plus. Households at the Recycling Center Plus. A household-size refrigerant type appliance is 15 dollars, a commercial-size unit is 2 dollars per cubic foot with a 15 dollar minimum, and ammonia gas type appliances are not accepted. A hauling company sets its own price.
When & how
Take the unit to the Recycling Center Plus at 305 Energy Parkway NE on a Tuesday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or ask the hauler on your account or a licensed Class D junk hauler to collect it.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove the doors so a child cannot be trapped, and empty any fluids before the trip, because lawn mowers are only accepted empty of fluids and ammonia gas appliances are refused outright. Say whether the appliance holds refrigerant when you call a hauler, because that changes the fee.
Self-hauling runs through the Recycling Center Plus
A self-hauler is a generator that does not contract with a Class A, Class B or Class C licensed hauler and instead brings its own material to the Recycling Center Plus at 305 Energy Parkway NE, and a self-hauler may not collect from anyone else for compensation. The drop-off opens Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., takes pre-sorted recyclables including aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, cardboard, paper, plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5, tin and steel cans and clean scrap metal free of charge, and charges a service minimum plus per item fees for garbage, appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, tires, brush and construction material. Residential municipal waste that would otherwise reach the landfill must come here.
The county ordinance lists unacceptable waste as the non-hazardous materials that are prohibited from disposal with mixed municipal solid waste and names tires, lead acid batteries, major appliances, used oil, yard waste and tree and brush waste. Minnesota adds its own rule for electronics: putting cathode ray tube devices in mixed municipal solid waste is prohibited, which is why televisions and monitors are recycled at the drop-off. Household chemicals, paints, batteries and sharps go to the Hazardous Waste Facility, and sharps go only to that facility, which takes household sharps free from residents who treat themselves and publishes its own disposal procedure.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

The Recycling Center Plus page carries a waste wizard where you type the name of an item and the county tells you how to recycle or dispose of it, and the same page lists the free pre-sorted recyclables and the charged household items.
