Appliances are listed as unacceptable both at the curb and at the transfer station, so a washer, dryer, water heater or refrigerator is not part of the bulky pickup. The city guide routes them to a scrap metal processor, and a working unit can be donated instead.
City cost & eligibility
No fee is published for appliance recycling. The city guide lists scrap metal companies that take appliances with the compressor removed and freon evacuated, and those companies set their own terms, so call ahead to confirm what they accept and whether anything is charged or paid.
When & how
Not collected curbside and not accepted at the transfer station. Deliver the appliance to a scrap metal processor, or donate a working unit to the ReStore during store hours.
Get it ready
Have a licensed technician remove the compressor and evacuate the freon before a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner goes to a scrap processor, and remove the doors for safety. Keep lead acid batteries, liquid paint and chemicals out of the load.
Only what fits in the cart is collected on trash day
From October 1, 2026 the hauler collects only trash that fits inside your single cart and will not pick up extra bags or items left beside it. Rent a second cart or enroll in recycling through Republic Services if you regularly have more, and remove carts you do not need so you are not billed for them.
New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas delay pickup by one day when the holiday falls on a weekday, with Saturday used to catch up. Weather can also change the schedule, so check with the hauler when a storm passes through.

City of Joplin Public Works with Republic Services
Scheduled bulky pickup with Republic Services
A single-family house or duplex inside the city limits with a mattress, couch, television, microwave, carpet or a small amount of bundled construction material that will not fit in the cart.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Bulky pickup is included in the base monthly solid waste rate of $17.42 that every household pays, with four pickups a year and four cubic yards per pickup. Extra carts cost $5.50 per month and optional curbside recycling costs $5.26 per month on the current page.
Arrange it
Call Republic Services at 800-431-1507 or use the municipality form to book each pickup, then set the items out on the day the hauler assigns. Regular trash day now takes only what fits inside the single cart.
Appliances, oils, lead acid batteries, railroad ties, liquid paint, tires, commercial waste and large amounts of construction or demolition debris are refused. Apartment complexes and commercial accounts are served by private haulers rather than this franchise service, so residents of shared buildings should confirm coverage with the building.
Donated construction materials such as lumber, doors, windows, cabinets, counters, fixtures, paint, plumbing and electrical supplies, plus household appliances and home furnishings, all sold to the public to fund Habitat home building
Donations are accepted from individuals and businesses during ReStore hours only, and the store decides what it can resell, so items need to be in reusable condition. Mattresses are not on the published donation list, and pickup can be arranged by calling the store in advance.
Donations are taken during ReStore hours, which the city guide lists as Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 417-782-SHOP to confirm the day and to schedule a pickup.

They go to the household hazardous waste drop-off at the Joplin Recycling Center on West A Street, which is free for residents of the five-county area and requires identification.
