Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Great Falls bars bulky items from the rollout container and collects them beside it instead: furniture goes to the curb two to three feet from the container on the regular collection day, where a separate brush truck takes the extra items.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential solid waste customers paying the published monthly collection rate, with the piece set out beside the rollout container on the regular collection day; a large accumulation that takes longer than two minutes to load may be charged at 12.00 per minute.
When & how
Put the furniture out on the household's regular collection day, with the container placed after 6 pm the evening before and no later than 7 am on the collection day.
Get it ready
Place the piece 2 to 3 feet from the rollout container near the curb, keep it out of the container because bulky items are barred from it, and note that the city may charge 12.00 per minute when a load takes longer than two minutes to collect.
White goods such as washers, dryers and hot water tanks are collected by arrangement with the Solid Waste Division, and a refrigerator, air conditioning unit or freezer is picked up with the CFCs removed for a higher published rate.
City cost & eligibility
From $27 per large appliance on a scheduled special pickup, from 27.00 for a washer, dryer or hot water tank up to 85.00 for a refrigerator, air conditioning unit or freezer because the CFCs are removed. City residential solid waste customers arranging the pickup with the Solid Waste Division on 406-771-1401.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Division on 406-771-1401 to arrange the pickup, then set the appliance out for the day that is booked.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, keep it out of the rollout container because white goods are barred from it, and expect the higher rate when the appliance holds refrigerant that has to be recovered.
Bulky items and sacks of leaves or grass go beside the rollout container on the collection day and are picked up by a separate brush truck, while the container itself may not hold bulky items, yard waste, propane or liquids.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential solid waste customers paying the published monthly collection rate, with the extra items set out beside the rollout container on the regular collection day; the city may charge 12.00 per minute when a large accumulation takes longer than two minutes to load.
When & how
Set the extra items out on the household's regular collection day, which the Solid Waste Office confirms on 406-771-1401, and put the container out no later than 7 am.
Get it ready
Place the items 2 to 3 feet from the container near the curb, keep bulky items, yard waste, propane bottles and containers, and liquids such as paint and solvents out of the container itself, and secure tree trimmings in bundles of no more than 75 pounds and no more than 4 feet in length.
Bulky items go beside the container, never inside it
The rollout container takes household rubbish only, and the city bars bulky items, yard waste, propane bottles and containers, and liquids such as paint and other solvents from it. A couch or another large piece is set at the curb 2 to 3 feet from the container on the regular collection day, where a separate brush truck picks up the extra items, and yard waste and bundled branches go out 4 feet from the container on the same day.
Containers go out after 6 pm and no later than 7 am
Containers may be placed out after 6 pm the evening before collection but no later than 7 am on the collection day, and they have to be taken back off the public right of way afterwards. Collection days vary by area of town, and the Solid Waste Office confirms the day on 406-771-1401. City code also requires all garbage in residential containers to be wrapped in paper or plastic, and extraordinary accumulations go in containers no bigger than 32 gallons.
White goods and drop boxes carry published rates, bulky extras do not
The city's rate schedule sets special pickup charges only for white goods, at 27.00 for a large appliance and 85.00 for a large appliance with Freon, while a bulky item set out with the regular collection carries no separate rate unless a large accumulation takes longer than two minutes to load, when the city may charge 12.00 per minute. Extra pickup of a 96 gallon container is 24.00 and a 300 gallon container is 34.00. A remodel load goes in a city drop box instead, priced per pick-up from 81.00 for a 3 yard construction dumpster up to 569.00 for a 40 yard container, each plus rental fees and disposal by weight.
Chemicals, paint and propane leave the collection route
Paint and other solvents are barred from the container, and propane bottles are not collected at all. Paint can be dried out with sand or kitty litter, bagged and placed in a regular container, propane bottles can be taken to Breen Oil Company at 2201 NW Bypass free of charge, and the rest of the household chemicals wait for the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, where the city accepts antifreeze, gasoline, lighter fluid, paint thinner, road flares, shellac, fertilizer, pesticides, cleaners and similar material while refusing latex based paint and mercury.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
