When the next collection does not fit your plans, choose a Dropcurb pickup day. Updates keep you informed, and completion photos show when the booked items are gone.

Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Apex removes large household items from the curb on a booked day rather than on the cart schedule. A household requests the pickup through the town's online service request form or Ask Apex, gets an email within 1 to 2 business days with the collection day, and sets the items at the curb by 6 am because the crew will not enter private property. The service is not available to businesses or apartments.
City cost & eligibility
From $30 for trip fee for 1 or 2 bulk items, with 3 or more items charged at 15 dollars each instead, and each mattress or box spring adding 15 dollars to the trip fee so a single mattress starts at 45 dollars. Apex residential addresses that book the pickup with the town. The fee is added to the next Town of Apex utility bill, and the service is not available for businesses or apartments.
When & how
Request the pickup through the town online service request form or Ask Apex at (919) 249-3311, wait for the email that confirms your collection day, then have everything at the curb by 6 am. Mattresses and box springs are collected on Fridays only, and items beyond the scheduled load are booked for a separate day.
Get it ready
Stack the load at the curb where the crew can reach it, box or wrap fragile items such as mirrors so broken pieces stay contained, break carpet down so a 12 foot by 12 foot piece reads as one item because multiple rooms are charged by the load, and keep refused material out of the pile so the whole load is not turned away.
A couch, dresser, table or chair is exactly the kind of large household item the town's fee based bulk collection is written for. It cannot ride the garbage cart, which takes household trash only and collects nothing left beside it, so furniture has to be on a booked bulk day.
City cost & eligibility
From $30 for trip fee when 1 or 2 bulk items are booked together, with 15 dollars per item once 3 or more items are scheduled. Apex residential addresses on a booked bulk day. The fee is added to the next Town of Apex utility bill, and the service is not available for businesses or apartments.
When & how
Book the pickup and have the furniture at the curb by 6 am on the confirmed day. The crew works at the curb only, so furniture has to come out of the house or garage before the truck arrives.
Get it ready
Take the piece apart where it comes apart and keep the parts in one pile, remove or bag the cushions, keep the pile clear of the cart, and offer anything still usable for donation before it becomes a bulk item.
Mattresses and box springs ride the same bulk service with two extra restrictions. They are collected on Fridays only, and a mattress and its box spring count as two separate items, so a set of bedding uses the whole allowance of a single pickup and anything else is scheduled for a separate day.
City cost & eligibility
$45 for minimum to set out a mattress or box spring, made up of the 15 dollar per piece charge added to the 30 dollar trip fee. Apex residential addresses on a booked bulk day, with mattresses and box springs collected on Fridays only and each piece counted separately. The fee is added to the next Town of Apex utility bill.
When & how
Fridays only. Book through the town online service request form or Ask Apex at (919) 249-3311, then have the bedding at the curb by 6 am on the Friday you are given.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry and free of the frame unless you are booking that as well, put them flat at the curb rather than leaning on a cart, and count each piece as its own item when deciding what else goes on the same pickup.
The town never names appliances in its bulk material, the garbage cart prohibits metal, and the Wake County convenience centers refuse appliances and white goods outright. What the county does name is the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility inside Apex, which lists air conditioners, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, ovens, washing machines and water heaters as accepted material.
City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no appliance item list, so whether a refrigerator, washer or water heater is booked as one of the fee based bulk items has to be confirmed with Ask Apex on (919) 249-3311, and Wake County publishes no fee on the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility page either, so confirm the drop-off terms on 919-856-7400 before you load.
When & how
The county facility takes appliances Monday through Saturday 8 am to 4 pm at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex. A curbside appliance would need a booked bulk day with the item at the curb by 6 am.
Get it ready
Drain and dry the unit, keep the doors and loose parts with it, and ask the county about refrigerant handling before a drop-off, because the county page lists appliances as accepted material without printing preparation steps.
Electronics are refused in the Apex bulk collection and prohibited in the garbage cart, and the town's own recycling page sends them to Wake County instead. The South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex takes any corded electronic device, naming computers, game consoles, printers, copiers, small appliances, audio and video players and televisions.
City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no electronics charge because its own collection refuses them, and Wake County publishes no fee on the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility page, so confirm the current terms on 919-856-7400 before you load.
When & how
The county facility is open Monday through Saturday 8 am to 4 pm to Wake County residents and businesses. The convenience centers take electronics at Sites 1, 4 and 11 only, and only on weekends.
Get it ready
Keep the device and its cord together, wipe a computer or phone before it leaves the house, and keep electronics out of the garbage cart, the recycling cart and the bulk pile, where the town refuses them.
Apex refuses construction, demolition and remodeling material at the curb, and the bulk page names toilets, vanities, mirrors and cabinets inside that refusal. The garbage cart is closed to construction debris as well. Wake County convenience centers do take household construction debris from the homeowner only, and the Apex center at 6120 Old Smithfield Road is one of the sites where verification is required.
City cost & eligibility
Neither government publishes a fee for this material: the town does not collect it, and the county convenience center page prints a residency verification requirement rather than a charge, so confirm the current terms on 919-856-7400.
When & how
The county convenience centers are open daily 7 am to 7 pm, and the Apex site at 6120 Old Smithfield Road takes household construction debris from the homeowner only with verification required.
Get it ready
Keep remodeling material out of the bulk pile and out of the garbage cart so the rest of the load is not refused, and keep homeowner generated material separate from anything a contractor produced, because contractor loads are not the household allowance.
The town's bulk material never names exercise equipment. A treadmill or weight machine is a large household item, which is the kind of thing the fee based service is written for, but a machine is also heavy and awkward enough that a crew may treat it differently, and the town publishes no item list for the service.
City cost & eligibility
There is no item list and no machine specific rate published, so confirm with Ask Apex on (919) 249-3311 whether the machine is accepted as one bulk item and what it is charged before you book the pickup.
When & how
If the town confirms it, the machine goes out on a booked bulk day with everything at the curb by 6 am. The crew works at the curb, so the machine has to be outside before the truck arrives.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, tie or tape the parts into one pile, remove the console and any battery, and set the whole thing at the curb rather than at the top of a driveway.
Tires cannot go in the garbage cart, where automotive parts are prohibited, and the bulk collection refuses automotive items. Wake County is the local route: residents can dispose of 5 or fewer scrap tires free at the South Wake Scrap Tire Recycling Facility at 6160 Old Smithfield Road in Apex.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Wake County residents dropping 5 or fewer scrap tires at a Wake County facility, which the county states is free of charge; more than 5 tires has to be arranged by contacting the county.
When & how
The South Wake Scrap Tire Recycling Facility at 6160 Old Smithfield Road in Apex is open Monday through Saturday 8 am to 4 pm.
Get it ready
Take the tires off anything they are bolted to, because tires with rims, cut tires, construction equipment tracks, oversized farm or construction tires and tires from tire dumps or cleanups are all refused, and tires bought or sold outside North Carolina are not eligible.
Yard waste is a town service on its own schedule, and that schedule changed while this page was checked. From October 19, 2026 collection is biweekly, with Zone A west of I-540 and Zone B east of I-540 plus Sunset Hills collected in alternate weeks. Peak Leaf Season runs from October 19, 2026 to February 5, 2027 with no assigned day inside the week, and Regular Season from February 8, 2027 gives each home a specific day.
City cost & eligibility
The town publishes that excess collection beyond the 2 cubic yard limit can be requested for a fee but prints no amount, and no separate yard waste rate appears on the page, so confirm any excess charge with Ask Apex on (919) 249-3311.
When & how
In Peak Leaf Season, put accepted yard waste at the curb by 6 am on the Monday of your zone's collection week and expect collection on any day that week. In Regular Season, place it at the curb within 48 hours before your assigned collection day.
Get it ready
Separate leaves, grass clippings, pine cones, pine straw, weeds without dirt and small shrubbery clippings for the vacuum truck from sticks, limbs and larger shrubbery for the chipper and grapple trucks, because leaves mixed with other debris are not collected. Limbs must be less than 6 feet long and less than 6 inches in diameter with the cut ends together, the pile stays within 2 cubic yards, within 3 feet of the curb, 10 feet away from a storm drain upstream, 6 feet from obstacles such as vehicles, mailboxes and fire hydrants and 10 feet from side property lines, and contractor or landscaper material is the contractor's to remove.
Carts out the night before, bulk items at the curb by 6 am
Garbage and recycling are collected weekly on the same collection day, and the town asks that carts be rolled to the curb the night before. Bulk items follow a different clock: once your pickup is confirmed, everything has to be at the curb by 6 am on the collection day, because the crew will not enter private property. Space carts 3 to 4 feet apart so the automated arm can reach each one.
The garbage cart takes household trash only, preferably bagged, and anything left beside a full cart is not collected. Yard waste, brush, construction debris, automotive parts including tires, hazardous waste, hot ashes, metal and corrugated cardboard are all prohibited, which is why a couch, a mattress or an appliance never rides the cart either. Recycling goes in the recycling cart loose and never bagged, with the lid closed and nothing outside.
Booked pickups, the confirmation email and the Friday bed rule
Request a bulk pickup through the town's online service request form or through Ask Apex at (919) 249-3311. An email confirming the collection day arrives within 1 to 2 business days, the service is not available to businesses or apartments, and mattresses and box springs are collected on Fridays only, with each piece counted as its own item. Wrap or box fragile pieces such as mirrors and glass so nothing scatters, and flatten moving boxes completely because the town charges bulk rates when boxes are not empty and flattened.
Wake County runs its South Wake sites on consecutive addresses along Old Smithfield Road inside the town, which covers most of what Apex refuses at the curb: 6130 for appliances, electronics and scrap metal, 6150 for household hazardous waste, paints, batteries and propane, and 6160 for up to 5 scrap tires free from residents, all open Monday through Saturday 8 am to 4 pm. The convenience center at 6120 adds mattresses and homeowner construction debris and runs daily from 7 am to 7 pm, and none of the four pages publishes a fee.
Yard waste collection became biweekly on October 19, 2026, with Zone A west of I-540 and Zone B east of I-540 plus Sunset Hills collected in alternate weeks. During Peak Leaf Season, from October 19, 2026 to February 5, 2027, there is no assigned collection day inside your week, so accepted yard waste should be at the curb by 6 am on the Monday your zone is collected and the pile can be taken on any day from there. From February 8, 2027 the biweekly schedule continues with a specific day and a 48 hour set-out window, and piles are capped at 2 cubic yards with placement offsets from storm drains, obstacles and side property lines.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
