The local disposal guide
Chapel Hill collects household trash and yard trimmings once a week, with both services paid for by property taxes and the trash going in a Town-issued cart. Large items and electronics are different: the Town charges for them, with a base fee for three items and a smaller charge for each one after that, and it publishes a yes and no list of exactly what the crews will take. The free alternative for the same material is an Orange County Waste and Recycling Center, where county residents can also bring limited construction and demolition waste from their own home. Dropcurb hauls residential items from addresses across Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill collects household trash once a week from a green Town-issued cart, and property taxes already pay for the service, so a household does not set up a separate account. Trash has to be bagged and tied inside the cart, because the Town ordinance does not let crews collect loose bags.
Yard trimmings are collected once a week on a different day from the trash and are also paid for by property taxes. Since July 1, 2026 the Town takes yard trimmings in Town-issued yard carts only, and a loose pile of any size moves to the paid knuckleboom collection.
Large household items and electronics are not part of the weekly collection. The Town collects them on a paid schedule, with a base fee that covers three items and a smaller charge for each item beyond that, and the same route serves both bulky furniture and electronics.
Furniture is named on the Town bulky item list, so a couch, chair, table or similar piece goes out on the paid bulky collection. Carpet and rugs are on the list too, with the size conditions the Town publishes.

The Town list names dishwashers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, refrigerators, stoves and stove tops, washers and water heaters among the items it collects, so an appliance goes out on the paid bulky item route. Refrigerators and freezers are on the collected list, while non-metal tubs, non-metal sinks and fiberglass are refused.
The Town collects televisions, computer monitors, electronics, stereos, DVD players, VCRs and microwaves on the paid bulky item route, so a set does not go in either cart. Dismantled computer parts are the exception on the Town list and are refused, while the county centers take electronics for free.
The Town refuses building material, lumber and wood, sheetrock, doors, concrete, dirt, rocks, railroad ties, roof shingles, pipes, non-metal sinks and fiberglass, so a project load never rides the bulky truck. Orange County takes limited residential construction and demolition waste instead, with a strict volume cap.
Exercise equipment is not named on the Town bulky item list, although general metal items are collected. The machine therefore has to be confirmed with Public Works before it is booked, because a refused item still carries the fee.
The handoff matters
Trash and yard trimmings carts go behind the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day and must come off the curb by 7 p.m. that day or the household can be fined, and material that misses the 6 a.m. set-out waits for the next week. Put the carts where crews can reach them without blocking mailboxes, walkways, bike lanes, traffic or storm drains.
Trash and Yard WasteSince July 1, 2026 the Town no longer collects anything in personal cans and no longer collects items placed in the wrong cart, so yard trimmings go in Town-issued yard carts only and trash goes in the Town trash cart. Small yard trimmings must be in a Town yard cart with no plastic bags, while leaf season from November to January also allows paper bags with a limit of five total containers each week.
Trash and Yard WasteAfter the Town receives payment, put the bulky items behind the curb where crews can easily reach them. A household that normally uses a rear alley for trash puts the items in front of the house, and a household with a Town dumpster puts them near the dumpster but never behind it, directly in front of it or leaning on it.
Trash and Yard WasteUse a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
