The Town cannot collect a mattress or a box spring at the curb, so bedding goes to a Wake County site that takes it within a per visit limit.
City cost & eligibility
The Town excludes mattresses and box springs from the curbside household item collection and directs the resident to a private removal service or the South Wake Landfill, and the county guide lists mattresses and box springs as acceptable at five convenience centers with a limit of two items per visit. The retained pages publish no fee for the county route, so confirm the fee and the receiving site before loading the bedding.
When & how
At a county convenience center during its daily hours, which run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., rather than on the Town collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry and bring no more than two pieces in one visit, because the county caps bedding at two items at the sites that accept it. Confirm the site before hauling, and ask about donation first if the piece is still in good condition.
Yard waste, dirt, construction material and household hazardous waste never go in the garbage cart. Sofa beds, mattresses, box springs and construction material are excluded from the curbside household item collection as well, so each of those needs a county load or a private hauler rather than a spot beside the carts.
Wake County convenience centers are open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the South Wake household hazardous waste facility in Apex is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The county accepts mattresses and box springs with a two item limit, homeowner construction debris without concrete or pavers, appliances, scrap metal and tires, but a corded electronic device goes only to the sites the county guide names.

The centers serve Wake County residents only, refuse concrete and pavers in construction loads, cap mattresses and box springs at two pieces per visit, and accept corded electronic devices only at the sites the guide names.

Yes, on a limited basis. The landfill prefers licensed haulers with credit accounts, but residents may bring waste and pay by cash, check or credit card up to the published card limit, and every load must originate inside Wake County.
