Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.
Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

City cost & eligibility
$15 per furniture item on a scheduled bulk residential item collection, on top of the 25.00 pickup service fee that covers up to five items. City residential solid waste customers who prepay for the bulk collection, with the item no heavier than two people can lift and carry.
When & how
Book the pickup by the published prepay deadline, which pairs with a pickup day later that week, with October 19 and October 21, November 16 and November 18, and December 14 and December 16 published as the remaining 2026 pairs, and no collection day in April because of Spring Cleanup Week.
Get it ready
Have the furniture at the curb by 6:00 AM on the collection day, though it may be placed out the evening before, keep it light enough for two people to lift, and report any item dumped on private property to the Bismarck Police Department on 701-223-1212.
Only what is inside the city-issued can is collected
All trash set out for collection must be inside the city-issued garbage can, and since January 1, 2025 anything placed beside the can is not collected at all. Garbage has to be bagged inside the container, animal waste has to be sealed in a plastic bag, grass trimmings and yard waste have to be bagged and placed into the container, and branches go in only when they are cut into pieces of 2 feet or less. The container has to be out by 6 AM on the collection day and placed three feet away from other containers, poles, signs and mailboxes with the handle facing the house.
The city publishes the list of items that will not be collected on the regular garbage route: appliances and electronics, box springs and mattresses, building material, carpet, concrete, construction and remodeling debris, decks and fences, dirt, furniture items, hazardous waste, oil, propane tanks, rocks, sand, sod and trees. Those items move to the prepaid bulk residential item collection or, for construction material and hazardous waste, to the city landfill.
The bulk collection fee is a service fee plus a fee per item
A prepaid bulk residential item collection starts with a pickup service fee that covers up to five items, and the disposal fee for each item is charged on top from the city's published list. The lower tier covers a bed, box spring, mattress, sofa, chair, recliner, dresser, television, treadmill, dishwasher, dryer, stove, washer, water heater, grill, toilet, small pool and propane tank, the higher tier covers every refrigerant item including a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner and dehumidifier, and a bag or can of leaves, grass or branches is priced separately. Each household is capped at two service fees and ten items a month, the service is prepaid with no refunds, and every item has to be light enough for two people to lift and carry.

Call Public Works on 701-355-1700 and select option 3 to prepay and schedule the collection, then set the items at the curb by 6:00 AM on the collection day, with October 21, November 18 and December 16 published as the remaining 2026 pickup days.
Prepaid with no refunds, a two person weight limit, a maximum of five items per service fee and ten items a month, and construction, deck and renovation material is unacceptable.

Can you take several different furniture items in one pickup?+
Yes. Add each piece and its quantity to one booking. A dining table and four chairs are five items; a separate mirror is not included with a dresser. You can mix eligible items from different rooms and review their combined total before paying.
Do I need to take furniture apart before pickup?+
You arrange any disassembly needed to move the furniture out of your home and into an accessible outdoor pickup spot. Dropcurb does not provide indoor disassembly or carrying. If you are unsure which catalog choice matches a dismantled or unusual piece, send a photo and ask before booking.
How does Bismarck collect a couch?+
