The local disposal guide
Bismarck separates its weekly service from everything large. The weekly garbage route takes only what fits inside the city-issued can, and since January 1, 2025 anything set beside the can is not collected at all, so appliances and electronics, box springs and mattresses, furniture, carpet, building material, concrete, dirt, rocks, sand, sod, trees, propane tanks and hazardous waste are all excluded from that route. The route those items take instead is the prepaid bulk residential item collection, which runs on a published monthly schedule: the household pays a pickup service fee for up to five items and then a disposal fee for each item, with a mattress, box spring, sofa, chair, dresser, television, treadmill, dishwasher, dryer, stove, washer, water heater, grill, toilet, small pool and propane tank each priced on a published list and every refrigerant item priced higher. There is a two person weight limit, a 6:00 AM curb deadline, no refunds and a cap of two service fees and ten items a month. Construction material cannot use either route and goes to the landfill inert waste site instead, where construction and demolition debris is priced by the ton, and the city landfill at 2111 N 52nd Street is also the published route for household hazardous waste and electronics under its own fee schedule.
