The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Nashua collects its own trash, recycling and seasonal yard waste, and the city runs a separate special collection for oversized items and tires between mid-spring and the end of October. Trash goes in one city-issued cart per residential unit, and nothing outside that cart is picked up, so a clean-out or a move-out load has to go to the Four Hills Landfill instead. A couch, mattress, appliance, hot water heater or bundle of brush is collected at the curb only after it is booked on the week's list, with the first five oversized items and the first four tires each year taken at no charge. Electronics are the clearest boundary: televisions, computers and monitors are never collected at the curb, and neither is construction or demolition debris, so both go over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center, where a residential permit covers the trip and the first two electronic items each year are free. Household chemicals, oil based paint, gasoline and pool products wait for one of the regional collection days the city hosts, and lithium-ion batteries are banned from landfills and incinerators, so they go to a retail collection box at Staples, Best Buy or BatteriesPlus, while the landfill office front desk takes rechargeable batteries, cell phones and mercury thermostats or thermometers on weekdays.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

A couch, sofa or other furniture piece is collected at the curb on an appointment between mid-spring and the end of October, inside the annual allowance of oversized items.

City cost & eligibility
$25 per oversized item once the five free special collections in a calendar year are used, with the first five items and the first four tires each year collected at no charge. Nashua addresses that receive city trash collection, with the item booked on that week's list and at the curb before the scheduled collection; a household that hauls its own load to the Four Hills Landfill instead needs the residential permit priced on the facility record.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 or send the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week's list. A furniture piece is not metal, so it goes to the curb by 6:45 a.m. on the trash day of the week it is collected, and it stays there until the truck comes.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole and liftable, set it out beside the city cart without blocking the sidewalk or the cart, and leave it curbside until it is collected. Nothing larger is collected at the curb outside the special collection season between mid-October and mid-spring.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is named among the city's oversized items and rides the same seasonal appointment list, and a household with a permit can also take it to the landfill instead.

City cost & eligibility
$25 per oversized item once the five free special collections in a calendar year are used, with the first five items and the first four tires each year collected at no charge. Nashua addresses that receive city trash collection, with the mattress on that week's appointment list and at the curb before the scheduled collection, or Nashua residents delivering to the Four Hills Landfill with the residential permit priced on the facility record.
When & how
Call 603-589-3410 or send the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week, then put the mattress at the curb by 6:45 a.m. on your trash day. The appointment season runs from mid-spring to the end of October, and a household can also take the mattress to the landfill during its open hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, take the frame and headboard off because they are separate items, and set the mattress out whole so one collection covers it. Leave it curbside until it is collected, and do not put it in a recycling container because mattresses are not recyclable.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances ride the city special collection, with metal items curbside by 6:45 a.m. Monday, and they are also recycled at no charge at the Nashua Recycling Center.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Nashua addresses that receive city trash collection, with each appliance counted as one oversized item and the first five items each year collected at no charge, or Nashua residents dropping appliances and refrigerant appliances off at the Nashua Recycling Center, where appliances carry no charge with the residential permit in place.
When & how
Book the appliance through the special collection at 603-589-3410 or the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week. Metal items such as a refrigerator or stove go to the curb by 6:45 a.m. on Monday and stay there until the truck comes, or the unit is taken over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center during open hours.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and remove food, secure the doors and drum for transport, and keep appliances out of the city trash cart because appliances are barred from the cart list and are handled as a separate stream at the recycling center.

Televisions and computer monitors

Special rules apply

No television is collected at the curb, and a set goes over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center, where the first two electronic items each year are free and later items are charged each.

City cost & eligibility
$5 per electronic item after the first two free items in a calendar year at the Nashua Recycling Center, with televisions, computer monitors, printers, VCRs and DVD players counted as electronic items. Nashua residents with the residential permit in place, since the center exists for Nashua addresses and every electronic item must go over the scale; sets from a business are handled under the center's commercial restrictions instead.
When & how
Take the set to the Nashua Recycling Center at 840 West Hollis Street during open hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and drive over the scale before unloading. Nothing is collected curbside, so no appointment is used for a television.
Get it ready
Keep the set whole and dry, back up or erase anything stored on it, and keep it out of the trash cart and the recycling bins. State and city rules both treat electronics as a separate stream because of fire risk in the trucks.

Computers, printers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Computers, monitors, printers and small devices are accepted at the Nashua Recycling Center, with the first two electronic items each year free and later items charged each.

City cost & eligibility
$5 per electronic item after the first two free items in a calendar year, counted across televisions, monitors, printers, computers and similar devices brought over the scale. Nashua residents with the residential permit, which is issued at the scale house against the vehicle registration; cell phones and rechargeable batteries are handed in at the landfill office front desk instead of the scale.
When & how
Drop items at the Nashua Recycling Center during open hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., over the scale. Cell phones, rechargeable batteries and mercury thermostats or thermometers go to the office front desk on weekdays, and printer cartridges go to Staples.
Get it ready
Erase stored data, keep power supplies with the device, keep rechargeable and lithium batteries out of the trash because the state bans them from landfills and incinerators, and use a retail battery collection box if a trip to the landfill does not fit.

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Construction and demolition debris is never collected at the curb, so it goes over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center and is charged by the ton.

City cost & eligibility
$303.5 per ton of construction and demolition debris weighed in at the Nashua Recycling Center, with the state disposal charge folded into the published rate from 1 February 2026. Nashua residents with the residential permit in place, since the center serves Nashua addresses and every demolition load must be weighed; loads of doors, windows, sheetrock, lumber, plywood, cement board, carpet and padding, roofing, siding, cabinets, tile, flooring, plaster, decking and similar material make up the charged category.
When & how
Load the material and take it to the Nashua Recycling Center at 840 West Hollis Street during open hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and go over the scale both in and out. Renovation material is not part of the city cart collection or the special collection, so there is no curbside appointment for it.
Get it ready
Keep construction and demolition debris out of the city cart and out of the recycling bins, keep loads secure on the road, and separate clean reusable material before the trip because the scale charges by weight. Asbestos from a home is handled separately and must be pre-approved before disposal.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No Nashua page names a treadmill or weight machine, so the machine has to be cleared with the Solid Waste Department before it goes out or over the scale.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no exercise machine rate, and the two possible routes are priced differently: an accepted machine would count as one of the five free oversized items each year and cost the published per item charge after that, while an item dropped at the center is priced by its category, so confirm the route with the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 before moving the machine.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 and describe the machine. If it is accepted as an oversized item it is booked by Friday afternoon for the following week and set out by 6:45 a.m. on the collection day; otherwise the department directs the trip.
Get it ready
Fold or break the machine down as far as the manufacturer allows, take the battery or console off so it can be handled as electronics, and keep the frame out of the city trash cart and the recycling bins.

Bulky items, brush and household cleanouts

Accepted with preparation

Bulky items and brush bundles ride the seasonal special collection, and everything beyond the city cart has to be taken to the Four Hills Landfill.

City cost & eligibility
$25 per oversized item once the five free special collections in a calendar year are used, with the first five items and the first four tires each year collected at no charge. Nashua addresses that receive city trash collection, with the item booked on that week's list and at the curb before the scheduled collection; clean-out and move-out loads are not collected at the curb at all and go to the landfill under the residential permit.
When & how
The special collection season runs from mid-spring to the end of October, with no pickups between mid-October and mid-spring. Book by Friday afternoon for the following week, then put non-metal items at the curb by 6:45 a.m. on the trash day and metal items out by 6:45 a.m. on Monday.
Get it ready
Bundle brush with branches no more than three inches thick and no more than four feet long, in bundles of no more than 60 pounds, keep everything clear of the cart and the sidewalk, and take anything the collection cannot take to the landfill, because no overflow beyond the city cart is picked up and a clean-out is not a curbside load.

Tires

Special rules apply

Tires come off the rim only, the first four each year are collected free at the curb, the Nashua Recycling Center charges its own rate for up to four more a year, and a fifth or later curbside tire is charged the published oversized item pickup price. No commercial tires are taken anywhere in the city programme.

City cost & eligibility
$3 per tire at the Nashua Recycling Center for up to four additional tires in a calendar year after the curbside allowance, with a curb pickup beyond the four free tires charged at the published oversized item price. Nashua residents, with tires off the rim and passenger vehicle tires only; the centre rate applies to up to four tires a year beyond the four free curb tires, a further curbside tire carries the oversized item pickup price, no commercial tires are accepted at the curb or at the Four Hills Landfill, and a drop-off needs the residential permit in place.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 to add tires to the special collection list during the mid-spring to end of October season, or take the tires over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center during open hours at any time of year.
Get it ready
Take every tire off its rim before collection or drop-off, keep tires out of the city cart and the recycling bins, and do not mix in commercial tires from a business because those are refused on both routes.

Household hazardous waste and paint

Accepted with preparation

Oil based paint, solvents, gasoline, antifreeze and pool products go to the regional collection days the city hosts, while latex paint is dried and taken to the landfill.

City cost & eligibility
$20 per vehicle for up to 10 gallons or 20 pounds of household hazardous waste at a collection event, paid by check made out to the regional solid waste district. Residents of Nashua and the partner towns of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Pelham and Windham, with materials in their original containers packed in a bag-lined box and drivers staying in their vehicles.
When & how

Morning events run 8 a.m. to noon and the June 4 event runs 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep material in the original container, pack leaking containers inside another container and everything in a sturdy box lined with a trash bag, never mix chemicals, and keep hazardous waste out of the trash, the drain and the ground. Latex and acrylic paint are refused at the events, so dry them solid and take them to the landfill trash box instead.

Extra bags, cleanouts and move-outs

Special rules apply

Only the city cart is collected, so extra bags, clean-out loads and move-out trash go to the Four Hills Landfill under the annual residential permit.

City cost & eligibility
$5 per vehicle per calendar year for the residential permit needed to bring extra bags, clean-out loads or move-out trash to the Four Hills Landfill, where household trash itself is accepted at no charge. Nashua residents who show the vehicle registration as proof of residency at the scale house; the permit fee is waived for residents 65 and older with a valid licence and registration, and the landfill serves trash generated in Nashua only.
When & how
Take the extra bags or the whole clean-out load to 840 West Hollis Street during open hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and keep in mind that the scale shuts off 30 minutes before closing. Nothing outside the city cart is picked up at the curb.
Get it ready
Bag the material so it can be handled safely, keep it out of the city cart, and buy the residential permit at the scale house before unloading. Recyclables, soft yard waste and brush go to their own areas of the site, and construction debris, appliances, tires and electronics go over the scale as their own categories.

The city cart is the only container that is collected

One city-issued cart is provided for each residential unit served by the department, all trash goes in plastic bags inside that cart, and no other container or loose bag is picked up. The cart goes to the curb no earlier than 24 hours before collection and by 6:45 a.m. on the collection day, within two feet of the curb with the lid arrow toward the street and the handle facing the house, at least 10 feet from a parked car and three to five feet from yard waste or another container, and it comes back in by the end of the day.

Oversized items are collected only on an appointment, so a couch, mattress, appliance, tire or brush bundle is added to the following week's list by a call to 603-589-3410 or through the oversize item form, submitted by Friday afternoon. Metal items go out by 6:45 a.m. Monday and non-metal items by 6:45 a.m. on the trash day, and everything stays at the curb until the truck reaches it. A residential permit is bought at the scale house against the vehicle registration, electronics, tires, demolition debris and asbestos all go over the scale, and payment is by cash, check or card. Buy the permit at the scale house, drive over the scale, and unload in the marked areas for electronics, appliances, tires, scrap metal and recyclables, with the yard waste, brush and construction and demolition areas on their own sides of the site. The site is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the scale shuts off 30 minutes before closing.

Oil based paint, gasoline, antifreeze, cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, sharps and medical waste are refused at the center, so those wait for a household hazardous waste collection day; latex paint must be dried solid and goes into the trash box; asbestos from a home needs pre-approval; and every electronics, tire and demolition load has to go over the scale.

With a new purchase

Use a retail collection box for batteries and cartridges

A household with rechargeable or lithium batteries, a printer cartridge or a mercury device that does not need a trip over the landfill scale.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Retail collection boxes are free to use for the items each store accepts; the city landfill office also takes cell phones, rechargeable batteries and mercury thermostats or thermometers at its weekday front desk.
Arrange it
Take lithium and rechargeable batteries to a collection box at a store such as Staples, Best Buy or Batteries Plus, take printer ink and toner cartridges to Staples, and hand cell phones, rechargeable batteries and mercury devices to the front desk at the landfill office on a weekday.

Each store sets its own accepted list, so check before the trip. Lithium-ion batteries have been banned from New Hampshire landfills and incinerators since July 1, 2025, so they never go in the city cart, the recycling bin or a bag of household trash.

How do I get rid of a couch in Nashua?

Book it on the city special collection list. Call the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 or send the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week, then put the couch at the curb by 6:45 a.m. on your trash day and leave it there until it is picked up. A couch counts as one oversized item, the first five each year are collected at no charge, and the season runs from mid-spring to the end of October.Official guidance

Will Nashua collect a mattress?

Yes, as an oversized item. A mattress is on the city's own list of oversized items, so it is booked by phone at 603-589-3410 or through the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week and then left at the curb by 6:45 a.m. on your trash day. The first five oversized items each year are collected at no charge and later items are charged each, and the pick-up season runs from mid-spring to the end of October.Official guidance

Where does an old refrigerator go in Nashua?

Two routes, both at no charge. The city collects appliances through the special collection, and because a refrigerator is metal it goes to the curb by 6:45 a.m. on Monday of the week it is on the list, booked by Friday afternoon at 603-589-3410. The other route is the Nashua Recycling Center at the Four Hills Landfill, where appliances and refrigerant appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers are accepted at no charge with the residential permit and every unit goes over the scale.Official guidance

What does Nashua collect as an oversized item?

Furniture, large appliances, mattresses, residential tires off the rim and bundles of brush, all booked on the week's list at 603-589-3410 or through the oversize item form by Friday afternoon. The first five oversized items and the first four tires in a calendar year are collected at no charge and later items are charged each. Electronics, construction and demolition debris and anything from a clean-out or a move-out are not collected at the curb and go to the Four Hills Landfill instead.Official guidance

When can I put a couch or mattress out for collection in Nashua?

Between mid-spring and the end of October, and only after it is on the week's list. Call the Solid Waste Department at 603-589-3410 or send the oversize item form by Friday afternoon for the following week, then leave a non-metal item such as a couch or mattress at the curb by 6:45 a.m. on your trash day and a metal item such as a refrigerator out by 6:45 a.m. on Monday. There are no pickups between mid-October and mid-spring, and the first five oversized items each year are collected at no charge.Official guidance

Where do Nashua televisions and electronics go?

Not to the curb. The city states that no electronics are picked up at curbside, so televisions, monitors, printers, computers and similar items go over the scale at the Nashua Recycling Center at the Four Hills Landfill during open hours. The first two electronic items each year are free and later items are charged each, a residential permit is required, and cell phones and rechargeable batteries are handed in at the landfill office front desk on weekdays instead.Official guidance

How is renovation debris charged in Nashua?

By weight, at the scale. Construction and demolition debris is not collected at the curb and is not part of the special collection, so a homeowner takes it to the Nashua Recycling Center at 840 West Hollis Street, where the load is weighed in and out and charged per ton with the state disposal charge included. The charged category covers doors, windows, sheetrock, lumber, plywood, cement board, carpet and padding, roofing, siding, cabinets, tile, flooring and plaster, and a residential permit is required.Official guidance

What can I do with bags that do not fit in the city cart?

Take them to the Four Hills Landfill, because nothing outside the cart is picked up. Extra bags from a celebration, a spring cleaning, a basement clean-out or a move-out are not part of the curbside collection at all, so they go to 840 West Hollis Street under the residential permit, which is bought at the scale house against the vehicle registration and is waived at 65 and older. Household trash is accepted there at no charge, and construction debris, appliances, tires and electronics go over the scale as their own categories.Official guidance

What are Nashua's limits on tires, paint and chemicals?

Tires come off the rim, passenger vehicle tires only, with the first four each year collected at no charge and later tires charged each; no commercial tires are taken at the curb or at the landfill. Oil based paint, stains, solvents, thinners, gasoline, antifreeze, pool products, pesticides, mercury and fluorescent bulbs go to a regional household hazardous waste collection day at 25 Crown Street in Nashua or one of the partner sites, charged per vehicle for up to 10 gallons or 20 pounds. Latex paint is refused there and is dried solid before it goes to the landfill trash box, and lithium-ion batteries go to a retail collection box.Official guidance

Do I need a permit to use the Four Hills Landfill?

Yes. Every facility user buys an annual permit at the scale house, and Nashua residents show the vehicle registration as proof of residency, with the permit fee waived for residents 65 and older. The site is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the scale shuts off 30 minutes before closing, and payment is by cash, check or card. Electronics, tires, construction and demolition debris and asbestos all go over the scale, and commercial haulers may use the site only for waste generated by Nashua businesses and residents.Official guidance
