Mattresses have their own line on the fee list rather than riding the furniture price. Both a mattress and a box spring are priced per item at the Recycling Center, and the city also accepts the same pieces through the curbside bulky pickup with the pickup fee added.

When & how
The drop-off route works during center hours, Tuesday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For the curbside route, pay first, then call Public Works on 603-427-1530 to schedule, and put the piece out between 7:00 p.m. the day before and 6:00 a.m. on the pickup day.
Get it ready
Count each mattress and each box spring as a separate item, because the fee is charged per piece. Keep the pieces separate from the regular trash on the pickup morning, keep them out of the recycling bin and the yard waste bags, and keep the load inside the weekly 300 gallon limit that applies to the property.
Residential curbside after 7 p.m., bulky between the evening and 6 a.m.
Residential properties put trash and recycling at the curb after 7:00 p.m. the night before the collection day. Downtown businesses work to a different clock, because the ordinance allows material out no more than two hours before pickup and the department typically starts around 4:00 p.m. Bulky items follow the booking rule instead, going out between 7:00 p.m. the day before the scheduled pickup and 6:00 a.m. on the day itself, always separate from the regular trash.
Pay before the gate or the pickup, and never in cash
Both bulky routes are paid up front. At the Recycling Center the attendant takes a credit card with a processing fee or a check, and the center does not accept cash, while an online payment before drop-off needs the receipt printed and shown at the gate. For a curbside pickup the item fee is paid through the portal with the $10 pickup fee added and the pickup location entered, and Public Works then schedules the date on 603-427-1530.

Portsmouth residents on the city collection route, paid through the payment portal before scheduling; a household served by a private trash hauler is not eligible for curbside pickup and has to use the Recycling Center instead.
Arrange it
Pay the item fee and the pickup fee through the payment portal, check the schedule pickup box and enter the pickup location, then call Public Works on 603-427-1530 to fix the date. The pickup falls in the rotation week for that material, and the item goes out between 7:00 p.m. the day before and 6:00 a.m. on the day.
Nothing goes to the curb without a booking, because unscheduled bulky waste is not collected. The item has to be inside the weekly 300 gallon property limit, kept separate from the regular trash, and matched to the right week of the rotation. Payment is by card or check rather than cash, and a household on a private hauler has no curbside option at all.
