Erase personal data from computers and drives before either route, keep electronics out of the garbage and recycling containers, and leave microwaves, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms out of the county load because they are refused there.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, appliances, metals, tires and televisions are appointment items. Call the Sanitation Division at (973) 266-5337 before they reach the curb and set them out only on the day you are given, with the doors removed from any refrigerator or freezer.

No charge. These pieces are collected by the city by appointment, and the handbook publishes no fee for the collection; the call and the scheduled set-out day are required.

Nothing in this group may simply be put out with the garbage, refrigerators and freezers need their doors removed first, and the city does not collect hazardous material of any kind.

No charge. Both county events are free to Essex County residents who show proof of residency, and commercial or large quantity users may not participate.

Take the load to the Essex County Department of Public Works at 99 West Bradford Avenue in Cedar Grove, with household hazardous waste on Saturday 3 October 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and electronics on Saturday 17 October 2026 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The events run on their published dates only, proof of residency is required, items go in the trunk with the driver staying in the vehicle, latex paint, household batteries, microwaves and smoke alarms are refused, and no business waste is accepted.
Household hazardous waste such as oil based paint and stains, gasoline and kerosene, antifreeze and motor oil, car batteries, rechargeable batteries, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs and ballasts and mercury, and electronics such as computers, monitors, printers, televisions, fax machines, scanners, keyboards, speakers, VCRs, stereos, DVD players and cell phones.
Free to Essex County residents with proof of residency and not for commercial or industrial facilities. Items go in the trunk with the driver staying in the vehicle. Refused material includes latex paint, household batteries, microwaves, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, asbestos, empty containers, regulated medical waste, explosives and unlabelled material.

If a device cannot be erased or contains sensitive business information, arrange suitable data handling before giving it away.
