The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Passaic splits its disposal work by material rather than by calendar. Household furniture, mattresses and box springs leave on the regular garbage day, two items at a time, as long as anything cloth is wrapped in plastic. Appliances are a separate call to Public Works, and televisions and small electronics ride the street cleaning route instead of the garbage truck. Household chemicals are the county's job, with free Passaic County collection events through the year and an October computer and electronics collection in North Haledon.

Couches, furniture and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Home furniture rides the regular garbage schedule in Passaic, two items at a pickup, and the city names mattresses, home furniture and box springs as the items allowed.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Passaic household with municipal garbage collection. The city publishes no separate fee for the two-item bulk pickup, which runs on the regular garbage day.
When & how
Put the pieces out on your normal garbage day, two items at a time, and keep the calendar clear of the holidays that do move a route. Garbage stays on schedule for most Passaic holidays, and only the recycling pickup shifts at Christmas and New Year's Day.
Get it ready
Wrap any cloth furniture in plastic before it goes to the curb, because the crew leaves unwrapped upholstered items. Keep the piece whole enough for two people to lift, and keep bulk out of the recycling container, which takes only the published recyclables in an open container with cardboard and paper flat and tied.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses and box springs are named on the city's bulk list, and they have one rule that residents most often miss: the full wrap.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Passaic household with municipal garbage collection and a bulk pickup on the regular garbage day.
When & how
Set the mattress out on the regular garbage day as one of the two items allowed per pickup. Garbage collection stays on the normal schedule for most Passaic holidays.
Get it ready
Wrap the mattress or box spring completely in plastic before it reaches the curb, because the city states that cloth furniture including mattresses will not be picked up unless it is wrapped fully. Count the mattress and the box spring as two of the two items allowed at that pickup.
Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devicesGarbage and recycling holiday pickup schedule

White goods, appliances and scrap metal

Accepted with preparation

Passaic collects used appliances and scrap metal as white goods on an appointment, and the published list names air conditioners, dishwashers, grills, refrigerators, stoves and washing machines.

City cost & eligibility
The city asks residents to call Public Works to schedule a white goods pickup and prints no fee for that service, while the tire entry on the same page does publish a charge. Confirm the current terms with Public Works when you book the appointment.
When & how
Call Public Works at 973-365-5654 to book the appliance pickup, then set the unit out as directed. Public Works answers the phone Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep it out of the garbage and recycling containers, which do not take appliances. Keep the appointment number handy on the day of the pickup, and ask whether the crew wants the unit at the curb or at a specific spot on the property.
Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devices

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners

Accepted with preparation

Air conditioners and refrigerators are on the city's white goods list, so a cooling appliance is collected by appointment rather than on the garbage truck.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no refrigerant rule for a cooling appliance and no fee for the white goods pickup, so confirm the unit, the refrigerant handling and the current terms with Public Works at 973-365-5654 before the appliance is moved.
When & how
Book the pickup with Public Works and keep the unit in place until the crew is scheduled, rather than putting it out on the regular garbage day.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit and secure the doors for transport. Do not cut refrigerant lines, and ask Public Works who handles the refrigerant, because the city's published white goods list names air conditioners and refrigerators without stating a recovery step.
Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devices

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Passaic treats covered electronic devices as a separate curbside stream that rides the street cleaning route, and Passaic County adds free collection events for computers, monitors, printers and televisions.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Passaic household using the covered electronic device collection on its street cleaning day, or a Passaic County resident with proof of residency at a county computer and electronics collection event.
When & how
Put televisions and small electronics out on your street cleaning day rather than the garbage day, and keep them apart from paper, bottles, glass and plastics. The county's next 2026 collection runs Friday October 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday October 24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Buehler's Cultural Center.
Get it ready
Never mix a covered electronic device with the recycling stream, and keep rechargeable batteries out of the garbage and recycling carts because the city flags them as a fire risk. Wipe data from computers and drives before handover, and ask the county about a device with a battery that cannot be removed.

Construction and renovation debris

Not on the regular city route

Passaic refuses construction debris outright. The city names the materials it will not pick up and puts the disposal on the homeowner.

City cost & eligibility
The city states that construction debris will not be picked up and that it is the homeowner's responsibility to dispose of it. No city, county or state drop-off for household construction debris could be confirmed from a primary page, so a renovation load is arranged privately with a hauler or container company.
When & how
Arrange the container or haul before the work starts, because the material cannot sit at the curb waiting for a collection day that does not exist.
Get it ready
Keep bricks, cement blocks, floor and ceiling tile, nails, paint, plaster, sheetrock or drywall, studs, windows, wood pallets, wood flooring and mirrors out of every collection stream, because the city lists each one as refused. Keep paint, solvents and other chemicals out of the load as well and route them to a county household hazardous waste collection instead.
Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devices2026 household hazardous waste collection dates and materials

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No Passaic or Passaic County list names a treadmill, elliptical or weight machine, so the machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
The city's bulk list names mattresses, home furniture and box springs rather than exercise equipment, and no county programme names it either. Confirm the machine with Public Works, or with the trash hauler Cali Carting at 201-991-5400, before it is set out.
When & how
Call before the regular garbage day, because the two-item bulk allowance is limited to the items the city names and a machine may not be accepted at all.
Get it ready
Describe the size, weight and any motor or electronic console when calling, and take loose weights and accessories off the frame so the piece can be handled. Keep the machine out of the garbage and recycling containers, and keep any battery out of the carts.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Two bulk items per pickup, on the regular garbage day

Passaic does not run a separate bulk calendar. Home furniture, mattresses and box springs go out with the regular garbage collection, two items at a time, and any cloth furniture has to be wrapped fully in plastic before it reaches the curb or the crew will leave it. Call the hauler Cali Carting at 201-991-5400 with collection questions.

Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devices

Appliances and covered electronics need their own route

White goods such as air conditioners, dishwashers, grills, refrigerators, stoves and washing machines are collected on an appointment that you book with Public Works at 973-365-5654, and they never go in the garbage or recycling container. Televisions and small electronics take a third route and are picked up on your street cleaning day, kept apart from paper, bottles, glass and plastics.

Public Works service list: bulk items, white goods, tires, construction debris and covered electronic devices

Keep construction debris and chemicals out of every stream

Bricks, cement blocks, floor and ceiling tile, nails, paint, plaster, sheetrock or drywall, studs, windows, wood pallets, wood flooring and mirrors are refused by the city, and the homeowner arranges disposal separately. Rechargeable batteries, charcoal and pool chemicals stay out of the roll carts as well, and household chemicals belong at a Passaic County household hazardous waste collection.

Free Passaic County electronics collections

A Passaic County household with computers, monitors, printers, televisions or other electronic equipment that it would rather drop off on a collection day.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free for Passaic County residents with proof of residency. Businesses and institutions have to call the Recycling Division for pre-registration.
Arrange it
Bring the items to a county collection date: Friday October 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Saturday October 24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Buehler's Cultural Center, 950 High Mountain Road in North Haledon. The county's other 2026 site was the Bloomingdale Senior Center on April 10 and April 11.

Two collection weekends a year only, on the published dates, and household material only unless a business pre-registers. The county's household hazardous waste events list electronics as unacceptable, so this electronics collection is the county route for screens and computers rather than the chemical event.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Most of what leaves a Passaic household does not need to be driven anywhere. Furniture, mattresses and box springs go out with the regular garbage collection two items at a time, with cloth items wrapped in plastic, and covered electronic devices go out on the street cleaning day instead. Appliances are the exception that needs a phone call, because air conditioners, dishwashers, grills, refrigerators, stoves and washing machines are collected as white goods on an appointment with Public Works. Household chemicals are a county errand: Passaic County runs free household hazardous waste collections for county residents, including a city lot on First Street on November 1, 2026, and free computer and electronics collections at Buehler's Cultural Center on October 23 and 24. Construction debris has no public route at all, so a renovation load is arranged privately with a hauler or container company.
