The Plainfield Environmental Resource Center at 95 Rock Avenue is open to Plainfield residents and property owners, who must show identification and proof of residency or property ownership. Contractors need a DEP sticker, posted vehicle weights apply, and cash, check, Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
Electronic waste must not be discarded with recycling or regular garbage and is not accepted in the solid or bulky collections. Residents and property owners drop it at the transfer station free of charge, two items per day per person, and commercial customers are not permitted.
Aerosol cans, wet or latex paint, fluorescent bulbs, syringes, motor oil and filters, smoke detectors, propane tanks, medication and helium tanks never go in either container. Union County runs free household hazardous waste events from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the county refuses latex paint, medical sharps, alkaline batteries, unlabeled containers and anything larger than five gallons.

No charge. The county lists its household hazardous waste drop-off events as free for Union County residents. Events run rain or shine, latex paint and medical sharps are refused, and containers larger than five gallons are not accepted.
Arrange it
Check the county schedule, then bring material in original or clearly labeled containers to the published event site between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The 2026 schedule lists four events, automobile tires are limited to eight per household with rims removed, alkaline batteries and unknown containers are refused, and unidentified material, explosives, radioactive material and PCBs are not taken.
Plainfield households can self-haul to the city-owned Plainfield Environmental Resource Center at 95 Rock Avenue, which is open to Plainfield residents and property owners with identification and proof of residency or ownership. Electronic waste is free there within a two item daily limit, furniture, mattresses and appliances are accepted as bulk waste at published per ton rates, and construction debris has its own per ton rate, while a vehicle from outside Plainfield pays a higher rate with a one ton minimum and rental vehicles are not allowed.
