The local disposal guide
Santa Fe runs weekly curbside trash and recycling with city-issued carts, and anything that will not fit in a cart is booked as a fee-based large item collection through the Environmental Services Division at 505-955-2200. That collection is charged by volume, not by item, and it accepts furniture, mattresses and box springs, appliances that are empty, carpet, doors, lumber, pallets, bundled brush, bundled construction material and lawnmowers with the fuel drained. It refuses electronics, tires, hazardous material, dirt, rocks, concrete and anything with a title. Everything else goes to the Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency, which runs the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station and the Caja del Rio Landfill for Santa Fe County waste: appliances are recycled at the transfer station, tires have their own free weekend once a month, household hazardous waste is taken there every Friday and Saturday, and electronic waste is priced by weight with a separate per unit rate for televisions and monitors. The transfer station is also where a garage cleanout or a load of renovation material goes, weighed by vehicle and charged at the scale.

A mattress or box spring is named on the city large item list and rides the same volume based collection, with no separate mattress rate published.
An empty appliance rides the city volume based collection, and the county transfer station recycles white goods with refrigerant appliances costing more per unit.
The city refuses electronics at the curb, and the county's own pages disagree on whether a television is recycled at the transfer station or handled as trash, so the set has to be confirmed first.
Electronic waste is banned from the landfill and is taken at the county transfer station seven days a week, charged by weight with a per unit rate for televisions and monitors.
Bundled renovation material can ride the city large item collection, while dirt, rocks and concrete are refused and everything else goes over the county scale.
No Santa Fe page names a treadmill or weight machine, so the machine has to be cleared with the city or the county before it moves.
Furniture, appliances, carpet, doors, lumber, pallets, mattresses and bundled brush ride one booked city collection charged by volume.
Tires are refused at the curb and at the landfill, and the county transfer station takes them with a free weekend at the start of every month.
Paint, cleaners, motor oil, pesticides and other hazardous products go to the county collection center at Buckman Road every Friday and Saturday.
Trash only goes in the city cart unless a paid bag tag is attached, and tagged bags go out with the regular collection.
The handoff matters
Every residence has one 96 gallon green trash cart and one 64 gallon blue recycling cart, collected weekly. Carts may go out as early as 6:00 p.m. the day before, must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day, and have to be back off the curb by 8:00 a.m. the following day. They go out with the wheels facing the curb, the lid closed, and nothing stacked alongside, because overflow, blocked carts and carts facing the wrong way are not collected.

Loose debris, plywood, boards, sheet rock and broken tile are containerized or bundled under 50 pounds, sharp objects go in a separate labelled box, and the pile stays three to five feet clear of carts, mailboxes, fences, walls, meters and parked cars.

Book a large item collection with the Environmental Services Division at 505-955-2200. The service is charged by volume rather than by piece, so a couch goes out with the rest of the load on the designated day, at the curb by 7:00 a.m. and clear of carts, mailboxes, walls and parked cars. Furniture has to be empty, bundles have to stay under 50 pounds, and a load larger than eight cubic yards is assessed for an additional fee on the Monday of the collection week.Official guidance
Yes, through the booked large item collection. A mattress and box spring are both on the city list, so they are added to a special pickup ordered at 505-955-2200, charged by the eight cubic yard volume along with anything else on the same load, and set at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the designated day. Nothing is collected the same day it is ordered, and a load over eight cubic yards is assessed for an extra fee the Monday of the collection week.Official guidance
Two routes. The city large item collection takes an empty appliance at the curb when it is added to a booked pickup at 505-955-2200, charged by volume with the rest of the load. The county route is the Buckman Road transfer station at 2600 Buckman Road, which recycles white goods for a per unit charge and charges more for an appliance that still contains refrigerant, with Capital Scrap Metals at 1162 Cooks Lane and Mr. G's Recycling at 7625 Baca Ln as the other named drop-offs.Official guidance
Appliances that are empty, barbecues with the fuel and charcoal out, brush and green waste in bundles with limbs cut to four feet, carpet, doors, furniture that is empty, lawnmowers with the fuel and oil drained, lumber, mattresses and box springs, and pallets. The load is charged by the eight cubic yard volume, everything is at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the appointed day, bundles stay under 50 pounds, and the city refuses electronics, tires, hazardous material, dirt, rocks, concrete and anything with a title.Official guidance
Call the Environmental Services Division at 505-955-2200 and take the next available slot, because no same-day service is offered. The collection is charged by volume for the first eight cubic yards with each additional cubic yard charged after that and tax added, an account more than thirty days delinquent is not eligible, and a load larger than eight cubic yards is assessed and confirmed before it is collected. Items go to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the designated day, and cancelling without one city working day of notice is charged as if the collection happened.Official guidance
Electronic waste goes to the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station at 2600 Buckman Road, which takes it seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and it is banned from the county landfill. Televisions are the awkward case: the agency rate table prices televisions and computer monitors per unit, while the agency's device page says the station recycles computer monitors only and treats televisions as trash, so confirm at (505) 424-1850 before a trip. The city large item collection refuses all electronics, and Best Buy at 3533 Zafarano Dr takes televisions 32 inches or smaller for a fee.Official guidance
Partly. Loose construction debris, plywood, boards, sheet rock and broken tile are allowed only if they are containerized or bundled in parcels under 50 pounds, and they ride the volume based large item collection booked at 505-955-2200. Dirt, rocks and concrete are refused at the curb, so those loads go over the county scale at the Buckman Road transfer station, where wood and lumber must be cut to four feet, concrete and asphalt to two feet by two feet, tree trunks to eighteen inches and stumps to three feet.Official guidance
The first Saturday and Sunday of every month are free tire days at the Buckman Road transfer station. At other times up to eight tires are charged per passenger tire, more than eight tires are charged by weight with a weigh in and weigh out, and ten or more tires also need a hauling form arranged with the agency at (505) 424-1850. The city large item collection refuses tires, the Caja del Rio Landfill accepts none at all, and a tire retailer that sells or installs tires has to take back tires of about the same size it sells.Official guidance
Every Friday and Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., at the household hazardous waste collection center at the Buckman Road transfer station, 2600 Buckman Road. The center takes leftover household products whose labels carry a flammable, ignitable, corrosive, reactive or toxic warning, including drain cleaners, motor oil, paints, solvents and pesticides, from Santa Fe city and county residents for a small charge set at the scale. Material stays in its labelled container, is never mixed, and must not be left at the center when it is closed.Official guidance
