Large household appliances are collectable bulky waste, and a refrigerator or air conditioner needs the refrigerant evacuated and tagged by a licensed HVAC professional first.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances count inside the four cubic yards of monthly bulky waste included for one and two family dwellings with active utility accounts, and the landfill also accepts them with a quarterly residential tipping fee exemption. Private refrigerant removal is arranged and paid for by the household.
When & how
Book the monthly bulky set-out week for the area, with the item at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday it begins, or haul it to the landfill during posted hours.
Get it ready
Have the refrigerant evacuated and tagged by a licensed HVAC professional before a refrigerator or air conditioner is set out, because the City lists that step for the unit to be collectable. Fuel cans, propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders never go to the curb or the landfill.
Bulky waste is collected once a month, starting on the Monday of the set-out week for the area and continuing until the area is finished. Items go out by 7 a.m. that Monday, nothing goes out more than 72 hours earlier, and crews may take up to three days to complete the route.
The monthly bulky allowance is four cubic yards, which the City describes as roughly four clothes dryers, two couches or three queen sized mattresses. Waste above the allowance is still collected but an additional charge is placed on the utility bill.
