City cost & eligibility
$27.95 per large mattress and box spring set booked through the hauler's bulky waste service, with a king size set billed as an extra large item at the higher rate and a flat pick-up fee of $16.00 for an urban address inside the Metro boundary or $32.00 for a rural address. Washington County addresses in the unincorporated area for the hauler route, and any customer delivering to a Metro transfer station for the free route, where up to four mattresses or box springs per customer per day are accepted at no charge.
When & how
Either book the hauler's bulky pickup for the bulky collection day, or drive the set to Metro Central at 6161 NW 61st Ave in Portland or Metro South at 2001 Washington St in Oregon City, both open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and closed on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days.
Get it ready
Keep the set dry and whole, take off the frame and headboard because they are separate items, and note that car beds, foldout sofa beds, futons, crib mattresses, waterbeds and air mattresses are charged as garbage at Metro instead of counting as a free mattress.
A couch, mattress, appliance, television or tire set is booked with the certificated collection company that serves the address and is collected on a bulky day that may differ from the regular garbage day. The charge is a flat pick-up fee plus a published rate for each item by size and material, the pick-up fee is billed whether or not the items are on site, and anything not on the published list is priced by size and weight. Metro Central and Metro South take self-haul loads instead, with recyclables, metal appliances, up to four mattresses a day and Oregon E-Cycles electronics free.

Cost & conditions
From $16 for flat pick-up fee for each urban collection inside the Metro boundary, or $32.00 for a rural address, with the published per item rate added on top and billed whether or not the items are set out at the agreed time. Washington County addresses in the unincorporated area served by a certificated collection company; the companies are Pride Disposal, Republic Services, Swatco Sanitary Service, Walker Garbage and Recycling Service and WM.
Arrange it
Call the company that serves the address for a cost estimate and to book the pickup, then set the items out on the bulky collection day, which may differ from the normal garbage day.
The pick-up fee applies regardless of how many items are set out and is billed even if the items are not on site, televisions and tires must never go in the garbage, reusable items should be donated first, and items not on the published list are billed by size and weight instead of a listed rate.

Any household delivering its own load during public hours; all mixed waste generated in the Metro service area must go to a Metro-authorized facility.
Arrange it
Drive to Metro Central, 6161 NW 61st Ave in Portland, or Metro South, 2001 Washington St in Oregon City, both open to the general public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, sort the load before arrival, and cover it to avoid the uncovered load charge.
Vehicles and anything with a drive motor, asbestos containing material outside the small hazardous waste allowance, burned material and wildfire ash, flat and built-up roofing, loads of liquids, petroleum contaminated soil, radioactive metals and electric vehicle batteries are refused, and customers are responsible for anything they leave behind, so improper dumping can bring asbestos testing costs and substantial fines.

A flat pick-up fee plus a rate for each item. The pick-up fee is lower for an address inside the Metro boundary than for a rural address outside it, it applies once per collection regardless of how many items are set out, and it is billed whether or not the items are on site. Item rates run from a small item such as an end table or bicycle, through medium and large items such as a chair, desk or recliner, up to an extra large item such as a couch or king size mattress set, with appliances, coolant containing appliances, electronics and tires on their own lines.
