Book the unwanted bags and boxes left after packing. Choose an available pickup day before you hand back the keys, and arrange to have them outside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

The city picks up many large household items free for its own refuse customers, but only when the resident schedules the pickup and receives a confirmation number. Collection is limited to regular household furniture and trash, and the excluded categories each have their own route.
A couch, a chair, a lamp, a table and a dresser are the examples the city gives for its free large item pickup, so ordinary household furniture is the core of the program. A piece that is still usable can go to ReStore instead.
A mattress is one of the items the city names in its free large item pickup, so bedding leaves on the same appointment route as furniture. It is not collected with the regular refuse.
Appliances are the first category the city refuses in its large item program, so a washer, dryer, stove or hot water tank leaves through the private market instead. A working appliance can go to ReStore for reuse, and a stripped metal unit can go to one of the city's metal outlets.
A unit that holds refrigerant has two published routes in Erie. A pickup service named by the city takes the appliance from the home or the curb and charges according to the item, while a unit with the refrigerant already removed is scrap metal for a metal yard.
Electronics are refused in the city's large item pile and cannot be landfilled under Pennsylvania law, so the route is a collection event or a recycler. The county runs hazardous and electronic waste collections around the county with pre-registration, and computers have a free drop-off through Goodwill.
Construction material is refused by the city in every form, from wood and plywood to plaster and tile, so a project load has no city route and moves through a private hauler or a reuse outlet.
Exercise equipment is not named in the city's example list, so a treadmill or a weight machine is confirmed with the Bureau of Refuse before it is scheduled, because the program is limited to regular household furniture and trash.
The handoff matters
A large item is collected only when the resident schedules it on 814-870-1550 on a weekday between 08:30am and 04:30pm or through the online form for up to three items, and only after the six digit confirmation number arrives. The item goes curbside on the night of the scheduled collection, and setting anything out without a confirmation number or at another time is treated as illegal dumping and draws a citation.
