Get it ready
Wipe stored data from drives, laptops and phones, keep the power supply and cables with the device, and keep electronics out of the refuse cart and out of the alley, because covered devices are banned from landfill disposal.
One cart, one day, refuse, organics and recycling together
State College residential refuse runs Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday depending on the address, with the day set when the account is opened through the Borough Finance Department. Refuse, organics and the red-bin recycling all come on the same collection day, the cart goes to the curb by 7 a.m. with the lid closed and three feet of clearance from trees, signs and other carts, and anything that does not fit goes beside the Borough cart in a container. Loose or fine waste such as ashes, plastic wrap, pet hair, kitty litter, tissues and packing peanuts has to be bagged, while larger items such as pizza boxes and lumber scraps can go straight in the cart. Carts come back off the street the same day, and residents who leave them out are subject to a fine.
What the borough will not take, and where it goes instead
Building materials, tree limbs and any part of a bulk load that weighs over 40 pounds or is too large to handle are refused. Limbs can go to the Borough Recycling and Compost Facility, building materials to the Centre County authority, and both cost money. Tires are not collected either: they may go to the Centre County Transfer Station at cost, or to the Borough Maintenance Facility by prior arrangement on 234-7135, and the borough will remove them at cost only if no private arrangement can be made. Electronics cannot be disposed of as refuse at all and must reach the county authority, which takes covered devices free.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

A Borough of State College household with furniture, an appliance, a television or another large household item to put out on the Monday run.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Borough residential refuse accounts, with up to three items per appointment and a charge possible on an excessive load, which public works confirms on 814-234-7135.
Arrange it
Submit the Bulk Refuse Pickup Form or call 814-234-7135 by five in the afternoon on Sunday, then put the items at the curb by 6 am on the collection day.
Three items at a time, no alley collection unless the property has no street frontage, nothing over 40 pounds or too large to handle, and no building materials, tree limbs, tires or unbagged fine waste.

Enter through Gate 1 and follow the signs to the scale house, which takes electronics and wood Monday to Saturday from 8am to 4pm.
Propane bottles and other sealed units, gasoline and fuel tanks, drums, barrels, paint cans, tar buckets, insulated pipe and boilers, lighting fixtures and hazardous scrap are refused with the appliances.

The authority publishes the event dates and a separate accepted materials list but no fee on the pages retained here, so confirm the terms with the authority on 814-238-7005 when registration opens.
Arrange it
The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is set for April 23-24, 2027, with registration opening in February, so watch the authority site and register before loading a vehicle.
The event runs once a year rather than as a standing drop-off, and the accepted materials list is published separately from the event page.

White goods and appliances at no charge, including air conditioners, dehumidifiers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, metal pots and pans, furnaces and electrical heaters, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers, stoves, ovens, microwaves and helium tanks; covered electronics such as desktop computers, monitors, laptops, peripherals and televisions free of charge; clean untreated wood, timber, pallets, yard trim, brush, stumps up to 24 inches across and empty cable spools at the wood programme; resident and commercial tires; refuse; and recyclables, with a free residential recyclables drop-off outside the gate.
Sealed units such as propane bottles, medical lab and hospital scrap machinery, gasoline and fuel tanks, drums, barrels, paint cans, tar buckets, pipe or boilers wrapped in insulation, lighting fixtures and any scrap containing hazardous waste are refused with the appliances, and the wood programme refuses painted, stained or treated wood, railroad ties, landscape ties and furniture.

From $25 for minimum refuse fee for a load up to 560 pounds, with over that weight pro-rated at $87.00 a ton, clean wood at $45 a ton with a $10.00 minimum, recyclables at $50.00 a ton with a $10.00 minimum, and resident tires at $87.00 a ton with a $25.00 minimum, while appliances and covered electronics carry no charge. Centre County residents and licensed haulers bringing material to the Transfer Station; payment is by personal cheque, cash or credit card, and residential recyclables dropped outside the gate are free.
