Household appliances are part of the city large item allowance, with a stove, washer and lawn mower named on the scheduled list and a microwave handled as a metal item. A unit that still contains refrigerant is the open question, because the city list does not name a refrigerator and the county route removes the Freon before recycling.
City cost & eligibility
Confirm the appliance when the pickup is booked. The city states that scheduled large items carry no additional fee, and a refrigerant unit can also go to the county small load area, where loads are charged by weight with a minimum for the first 470 pounds.
When & how
Book the appliance as a large item seven to ten days ahead, or take a refrigerant unit to the county small load area Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost a cooling appliance, drain the gas and oil from a lawn mower before it goes out, secure the doors, and keep the unit out of the ordinary bags.
Nothing large goes out until the pickup is confirmed
Submitting the large item request form does not schedule anything. The large item attendant calls back within 48 hours to fix the date, an email confirmation follows, and the pickup itself is set seven to ten days out. Items then sit with the normal trash, no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before and by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day, and calling before 3 p.m. on a Wednesday is what gets the collection into the following week's schedule.
Two collection days a week, with 32 gallon and 40 pound limits
York collects household trash twice a week. Bags and containers go to the pickup point after 5 p.m. the night before and by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and the city may allow a 5 a.m. start in extreme heat or winter weather. Trash goes in securely tied bags or in plastic or metal cans with a lid and handles, nothing bigger than 32 gallons or heavier than 40 pounds, and indoor kitchen or bathroom cans are not part of the programme.
Up to two passenger tires off the rim can ride with regular trash, with each tire replacing one bag inside the normal limit, but a tire on the rim has to be scheduled as a large item and the limit is two. Commercial customers may not put tires out at all, and the county charges by the ton when a load is nothing but tires. Drain the gas and oil from a lawn mower before it goes out, and keep paint, chemicals and other hazardous material out of the trash because the county runs registered collection events and a drop-off for those instead.

Book a city large item pickup
A York household with a couch, mattress, appliance or other approved bulky item that does not fit the 32 gallon and 40 pound trash limits.
Cost & conditions
No charge. York curbside customers with an active city refuse account. The city states that large item collections run year-round as part of the regular curbside service with no additional fee to schedule, and that a household may schedule up to five furniture pieces, appliances and other approved bulky items each week.
Arrange it
Submit the large item request form, take the attendant's callback within 48 hours, keep the email confirmation, and set the items out between 5 p.m. the night before and 6 a.m. on the scheduled day.
Nothing goes out before the pickup is confirmed, the schedule runs seven to ten days out, televisions and computers are refused, and car parts, tires not on a rim, shingles, pool tables, dirt, stone, trampolines, fencing, garage doors, propane tanks and anything in bags or boxes are not scheduled.

From $20 for minimum fee for a small load up to 470 pounds, with the general rate at 85 dollars per ton, tire-only loads at 200 dollars per ton and a 3.50 dollar service fee on credit card payments. York County residents delivering their own load, paid in cash, by check or by credit card other than American Express.
Arrange it
Drive to 2651 Blackbridge Road, take the second gate entrance, check in with the weigh master and unload in the small load area between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday or 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday.
Asbestos, clay, concrete and slate shingles, railroad ties, sand, soil, stone, gravel and solar panels are refused, while asphalt, metal, vinyl and wood shake shingles are accepted up to one pickup truck or small trailer load per disposal. Refrigerant appliances must have the Freon removed by staff rather than by the customer, and this is a drop-off site rather than a collection service.
York has two layers of self-haul. The city side is the scheduled large item service: up to five furniture pieces, mattresses or appliances a week at no additional fee, booked seven to ten days ahead through the Public Works request form, with the item going out between 5 p.m. the night before and 6 a.m. on the scheduled day. The county side is the York County Resource Recovery Center at 2651 Blackbridge Road, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon, where a small load is charged at $85 per ton with a $20 minimum for the first 470 pounds and tire-only loads run at $200 per ton, paid in cash or by check or a credit card other than American Express.
