The local disposal guide
York runs curbside collection through its contracted hauler and schedules big items itself: households can put out up to five furniture pieces, mattresses or appliances a week as a large item collection, at no additional fee, as long as the pickup is booked seven to ten days ahead through the Public Works request form and the attendant callback. Trash itself goes out twice a week in cans or bags of no more than 32 gallons and 40 pounds. Anything the city will not schedule, from televisions to shingles, has a county answer: Pennsylvania bans televisions, computers and their peripherals from disposal, so the county's free electronics programme takes them, and the York County Resource Recovery Center takes small loads, metal, refrigerant appliances, yard waste and most household chemicals by weight on Blackbridge Road.

Furniture is a scheduled large item rather than something that rides with the ordinary bags. York lets a household book up to five furniture pieces, appliances or other approved bulky items a week, year-round, at no additional fee, as long as the pickup is arranged seven to ten days ahead.
A mattress is named on the city's list of items that can be scheduled as a large item, so it leaves on the same no-fee weekly large item collection as furniture. The county's small load drop-off also takes mattresses if the household would rather haul it.
Household appliances are part of the city large item allowance, with a stove, washer and lawn mower named on the scheduled list and a microwave handled as a metal item. A unit that still contains refrigerant is the open question, because the city list does not name a refrigerator and the county route removes the Freon before recycling.
Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act bans televisions, computers, monitors and peripherals from disposal, so the city will not schedule them and the county's free electronics programme takes them instead. The programme runs six days a week and limits televisions to five per resident per visit.
The city takes only what fits the regular trash rules: lumber and wood must be cut and bundled to 3 feet and 40 pounds, and shingles, dirt, stone and similar material are refused outright. The county small load area takes a defined construction list at the tonnage rate.
Exercise equipment is not named on the city's scheduled list or on the county's accepted material lists, so the route has to be confirmed. The city allowance covers household furniture and appliances, and the county small load area takes metal items, which is the likely answer for a metal framed machine.
Trash is collected twice a week by the city's contracted hauler. Bags and cans are capped at 32 gallons and 40 pounds, containers need lids and handles, and everything goes to the pickup point by 6 a.m. on the collection day.
The handoff matters
Submitting the large item request form does not schedule anything. The large item attendant calls back within 48 hours to fix the date, an email confirmation follows, and the pickup itself is set seven to ten days out. Items then sit with the normal trash, no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before and by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day, and calling before 3 p.m. on a Wednesday is what gets the collection into the following week's schedule.
Schedule a large itemRefuse curbside collection serviceYork collects household trash twice a week. Bags and containers go to the pickup point after 5 p.m. the night before and by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and the city may allow a 5 a.m. start in extreme heat or winter weather. Trash goes in securely tied bags or in plastic or metal cans with a lid and handles, nothing bigger than 32 gallons or heavier than 40 pounds, and indoor kitchen or bathroom cans are not part of the programme.
Refuse curbside collection serviceUp to two passenger tires off the rim can ride with regular trash, with each tire replacing one bag inside the normal limit, but a tire on the rim has to be scheduled as a large item and the limit is two. Commercial customers may not put tires out at all, and the county charges by the ton when a load is nothing but tires. Drain the gas and oil from a lawn mower before it goes out, and keep paint, chemicals and other hazardous material out of the trash because the county runs registered collection events and a drop-off for those instead.

As a scheduled large item. York allows up to five household furniture pieces a week at no additional fee, but the pickup has to be booked seven to ten days ahead through the Public Works request form, and the item goes out from 5 p.m. the night before the scheduled day.Official guidance
Yes, as a scheduled large item. Mattresses are on the city's list of items that can be scheduled, the collection is part of the regular curbside service with no additional fee, and it has to be booked seven to ten days in advance. The county small load drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center also accepts mattresses.Official guidance
Confirm it when you book, because the city's scheduled list names a stove, washer and lawn mower but not a refrigerator. A refrigerant unit such as a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier is accepted at the county small load drop-off, where the Freon is removed before the appliance is recycled, and small loads there are charged by weight with a minimum.Official guidance
To the county's free electronics programme, because Pennsylvania law bans televisions, computers, monitors and peripherals from disposal, and the city large item service will not schedule them. The programme is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon, with a limit of five televisions per resident per visit.Official guidance
ESC Waste Services holds the city's curbside contract from May 1, 2025 through April 30, 2030, and the city's Public Works department schedules large item collections on top of that service. The county is not a hauler: the York County Solid Waste Authority runs the disposal site and says plainly that it does not pick up garbage.Official guidance
Seven to ten days. Submitting the request form does not schedule anything by itself, because the large item attendant calls back within 48 hours to fix the date and then emails a confirmation. Calling before 3 p.m. on a Wednesday is what gets the collection into the following week's schedule.Official guidance
Up to two passenger tires off the rim can ride with regular trash, with each tire replacing one bag inside the normal limit. A tire on the rim has to be scheduled as a large item, with a limit of two, and commercial customers may not put tires out at all, with fines up to $600 per occurrence.Official guidance
The York County Resource Recovery Center charges $85 per ton with a $20 minimum for loads up to 470 pounds, and a proportionate charge above that, while a load that is only tires runs at $200 per ton. Payment is cash, check or a credit card other than American Express, with a $3.50 service fee on card payments.Official guidance
The county holds two events a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind its Recycling Drop-Off Center, free for York County residents but with registration required. The fall 2026 event is October 17, and household chemicals can also be taken to the Resource Recovery Center except for mercury devices, pressurized gas tanks, rechargeable batteries, pool chemicals, flares, weapons, ammunition and radioactive material.Official guidance
No. Pennsylvania bans televisions, computers, monitors and peripherals from disposal, the city large item service will not schedule them, and the county runs a free electronics programme instead. Televisions are limited to five per resident per visit there.Official guidance
The county small load area names metal items such as bed frames and bookshelves and the city schedules a microwave as a metal item, but neither page names exercise equipment, so confirm the machine with the large item office at 717-843-1240 or the county at 717-845-1066 before it goes outside.Official guidance
