The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Pawtucket runs its own weekly refuse collection in city barrels and a Transfer Station at 240 Grotto Avenue for residents' own loads. Anything bulky has to be scheduled with Public Works before it goes out: furniture is limited to three pieces a week with a published charge on the larger pieces, mattresses and box springs carry a charge unless they can be taken to the free monthly drop-off, and refrigerators and freezers are priced separately from the appliances and metal that ride the same route at no charge. Construction material is refused at both the curb and the Transfer Station, so a project load goes to the state's resource recovery campus in Johnston.

Weekly refuse in the city barrels

Accepted with preparation

Pawtucket collects refuse weekly in city-issued barrels, and loose garbage is not collected at all.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no monthly collection rate on the pages reviewed; refuse runs through the city budget and questions go to Public Works on 401-728-0500 ext. 233. The Transfer Station, if you take a load yourself, charges $10 for a pickup, van or SUV load of up to three bags and nothing for a small car load of the same size.
When & how
Put the barrel at the curb in front of the residence no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before collection. Never place a container in or on the street.
Get it ready
Bag all refuse and place it inside the city barrel, because loose garbage is not collected. Keep cardboard separate for recycling, keep yard waste in its own container or composting bag on the same day, and keep construction material, metal items, appliances, mattresses and tires out of the barrel.

Cardboard and recycling separation

Accepted with preparation

Cardboard has to be kept out of the trash and recycled, and contaminated cardboard is refused at the Transfer Station.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Pawtucket residents using curbside recycling or the Transfer Station. Corrugated cardboard is listed with no charge at the station, and cardboard that is contaminated, soiled or wet is not accepted.
When & how
Set recycling out with the weekly collection, or take cardboard to the Transfer Station during its operating hours.
Get it ready
Break boxes down and keep them dry and clean, because the station refuses soiled or wet cardboard. Trash placed in a cardboard box is not accepted, so empty the box and put the loose refuse in the barrel.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricing

Scheduled bulky items and metal

Special rules apply

Metal items and the larger household pieces have to be scheduled with Public Works before they go to the curb, and the price depends on the item.

City cost & eligibility
The city prices bulky collection by item: furniture pieces such as love seats, couches, sectionals, kitchen tables and up to six chairs are $10 each, refrigerators, freezers, mattresses and box springs are $16 each, and stoves, washers, dryers, water coolers, metal and televisions are listed at no charge, with each air conditioner past the yearly limit at $16. Confirm your specific load on 401-728-0500 ext. 233.
When & how
Call Public Works on 401-728-0500 ext. 233 and book the collection before the item goes outside. Furniture is limited to three pieces a week.
Get it ready
Describe each piece when you call, keep the load inside the three-piece weekly limit, and keep the items clear of the barrels and the street. Construction material, propane tanks and automobile parts never go out with a scheduled bulky pickup.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricing

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress or box spring is collected on the scheduled route for a published charge, and a recyclable piece can be dropped free at the Transfer Station or at the city's monthly event.

City cost & eligibility
From $16 for the scheduled curbside collection charge for a mattress or box spring, listed at $16 each, with the Transfer Station taking recyclable mattresses and box springs at no charge up to three pieces a day and charging $25 for each non-recyclable piece. Pawtucket properties served by city collection, with the pickup scheduled on 401-728-0500 ext. 233, or a resident bringing the piece to the Transfer Station with a license showing a city address.
When & how
Schedule the curbside pickup before the piece goes out, or take it to the Transfer Station Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. or Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free monthly drop-off runs on the first Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the lot across from City Hall.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and, at the Transfer Station, tie or roll it so it can be handled. Ask whether the piece counts as recyclable when you call, because the station charges only for the non-recyclable kind, and keep the mattress out of the refuse barrel.

Couches, tables and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is collected on the scheduled route, three pieces a week, with a published charge for love seats, couches, sectionals, kitchen tables and up to six chairs, and the Transfer Station takes furniture free by appointment within a three-piece limit.

City cost & eligibility
From $10 for the published scheduled charge of $10 each for love seats, couches, sectional couches up to three pieces, kitchen tables and up to six chairs, with other furniture scheduled through the same three-piece weekly appointment. Pawtucket properties served by city collection, scheduled on 401-728-0500 ext. 233, or a resident bringing furniture to the Transfer Station appointment route, which lists furniture at no charge within a three-piece limit.
When & how
Call Public Works to book the collection, then put out no more than three pieces in the week you booked. The Transfer Station furniture appointment is booked and paid through the city's Viewpoint account.
Get it ready
Take loose cushions and drawers out where you can, keep the piece manageable for two people, and keep it clear of the barrels and the street. Do not put furniture in the barrel, because the city collects it only as a scheduled bulky item.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricing

Stoves, washers, dryers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

Stoves, washers, dryers, water coolers and air conditioners are collected on the scheduled route at no charge, with air conditioners limited to two a year before a per-unit charge applies.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Pawtucket properties served by city collection, for stoves, washers, dryers, water coolers and air conditioners, with the unit scheduled on 401-728-0500 ext. 233 before it goes to the curb. Air conditioners are limited to two a year, and each additional unit is $16.
When & how
Call Public Works to schedule the pickup, then put the unit out on the day they give you rather than on a regular barrel day.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance before it goes out and keep it off the barrel line. Ask whether the unit holds refrigerant when you schedule, because a refrigerator or freezer is priced separately and does not ride the no-charge part of the route.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricing

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners

Special rules apply

A refrigerator or freezer carries a published scheduled charge, while an air conditioner is free within the yearly limit and priced after it, and the Transfer Station takes air conditioners at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
$16 for the scheduled charge of $16 each for a refrigerator or freezer, with air conditioners free up to two units a year and $16 for each additional unit. Pawtucket properties served by city collection, scheduled on 401-728-0500 ext. 233. The Transfer Station lists air conditioners at no charge but publishes no refrigerator line, so a cooling appliance that still holds refrigerant has to be confirmed before it is loaded.
When & how
Schedule the pickup with Public Works, or take the unit to the Transfer Station during its operating hours if the station confirms it takes it.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, keep it upright where the maker requires it, and do not cut any refrigerant line. Ask about refrigerant handling when you book, because neither page states how the refrigerant itself is recovered.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricing

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions ride the scheduled bulky route at no charge and the Transfer Station lists them free by appointment, while computers and electronics go to the city's free monthly collection or to a drop-off on Central Avenue.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Pawtucket residents. Televisions are listed with no charge on the scheduled bulky route and free within a three-piece Transfer Station appointment, and the monthly mattress and e-waste event collects computers and electronics free for residents. The event is open to non-residents for electronics as well.
When & how
Schedule a television with Public Works, take it to the Transfer Station appointment, or bring computers and electronics to the monthly event on the first Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the lot across from City Hall.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before a computer or drive leaves the house, keep cords and remotes with the device, and leave appliances, household trash and hazardous waste behind, because the event refuses all three. Keep electronics out of the refuse barrel.
Trash and recycling collection rules and scheduled pickupsTransfer Station hours, residency rules and pricingFree mattress and e-waste drop-off event

Construction and remodeling debris

Not on the regular city route

Pawtucket refuses construction material at the curb and at the Transfer Station, and the state campus in Johnston lists construction and demolition debris as a statewide drop-off option.

City cost & eligibility
No city construction rate exists, because the curb and the Transfer Station both refuse this material. The state's resource recovery campus handles construction and demolition debris as a statewide drop-off option with fees that the pages reviewed do not publish, so confirm the load and the fee on 401-942-1430 ext. 3102, the number the city prints for construction disposal.
When & how
Arrange the disposal before the work produces debris. The state campus operates Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to noon, closed on the published holidays.
Get it ready
Keep sand, dirt, sod, rocks, demolition lumber, broken concrete, asphalt, plaster, tile, brick, toilets, tubs, vanities and cabinets out of the barrels and off the curb, because the city refuses all of them. Ask the state campus which entrance to use, since the campus has separate entrances for the landfill, the residential area and the administration building.

Exercise machines and weights

Special rules apply

No Pawtucket page names exercise equipment, so the machine has to be confirmed against the scheduled furniture and metal routes before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes per-piece furniture charges and a no-charge metal line but says nothing about an exercise machine, so confirm the machine and the price on 401-728-0500 ext. 233 before it is scheduled. A metal frame may qualify for the no-charge metal collection.
When & how
Call Public Works and confirm the route first, then book the pickup and put the machine out on the agreed day.
Get it ready
Take the console, weights and any battery pack off, keep the frame as one manageable piece, and keep the machine out of the refuse barrel. Ask whether the metal frame can ride the metal collection when you call.

Barrels out the evening before, never in the street

Refuse goes in the city barrel, bagged, in front of the residence and no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before collection. Loose garbage is not collected, containers never go in or on the street, yard waste is separated into its own container or composting bag on the same day, and cardboard is kept out of the trash because trash inside a box is not accepted.

Bulky items need a call before they go out

Metal items, furniture, mattresses, box springs, appliances and televisions are only collected once they are scheduled with Public Works on 401-728-0500 ext. 233. Furniture is limited to three pieces a week, the larger pieces carry a published price, and everything else that will not fit a barrel can be taken to the Transfer Station with proof of Pawtucket residency.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Pawtucket residents have two self-haul routes and one state route. The Transfer Station at 240 Grotto Avenue takes household bags, rugs, yard waste, cardboard, tires, white metal, air conditioners, mattresses, propane and motor oil from residents who show a city-address license, and it books bulky items, refrigerators and freezers, furniture, televisions and metal by appointment, but it refuses construction and commercial waste. A recyclable mattress or box spring can also be dropped free at the city's monthly event on the first Saturday, in the lot across from City Hall, or free at Tuff Stuff Recycling on Walcott Street, and electronics go to that event or to Green Tech Assets on Central Avenue.
