The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Beaufort has two systems, and which one applies depends on what is being thrown away. Inside the city limits the City contracts the pickup, so trash, yard debris and recycling all run through one hauler on a weekly round with recycling every other week on the same day. A city household pays for that service monthly through its water bill, and the first recycling bin comes from the City. Everything the curbside truck will not take goes to the county instead. Beaufort County runs nine convenience centers, four of which take the large items, and a county property owner applies for a solid waste pass that allows three visits a week. The centers take the big five recyclables, appliances with the doors removed, tires, construction and demolition debris, household hazardous waste in the shed, and bulky items such as dressers, sofas, tables and mattresses. Electronics are the exception: screens and other devices go only to the county's appointment based drop-off, because the state banned them from the landfill. The county itself does not run curbside pickup at all, so a curbside question belongs with the hauler and a disposal question belongs with the center.

City curbside trash, yard debris and recycling

Accepted with preparation

The City contracts one hauler for trash, yard debris and recycling, with recycling collected every other week on the same day as the other pickups.

City cost & eligibility
A city household pays for the solid waste program monthly through its water bill, and the initial recycling bin comes from the City at no cost, but no retained page publishes the monthly amount, so confirm the charge and how it appears on the bill with the City or the water authority.
When & how
Trash and yard debris on the weekly collection day for the address, with recycling on the same day every other week.
Get it ready
Set the containers out on the collection day for the address and keep recyclables loose rather than bagged. A household that needs a bin, a repair, a missed collection or a billing answer goes to the City or its hauler rather than to the county, because the county states that it does not run curbside pickup at all.
City trash and recycling page naming the contracted hauler, the trash, yard debris and recycling service, and the every other week recycling schedule on the same day as the other pickupsCounty municipality options page with the City of Beaufort curbside collection, the monthly solid waste charge on the water bill and the free initial recycling binsCounty resident recycling booklet, retained as its sixteen page bodies, with the disposal classes, the large item list and its four center limit, the construction and demolition debris rule, the prohibited items, the landfill direction for larger quantities and the hours and locations page

Bulky items and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture and other bulky household items go to a county convenience center, where they are placed in the class two container, or to one of the four centers that take the named large items.

City cost & eligibility
No retained page publishes a per visit charge for a pass holder at a convenience center, so confirm whether any fee applies at the center you use. The pass itself is required, and the county restricts centers to county property owners with a livable dwelling unit on the property.
When & how
At a convenience center on one of its open days, which for the Shanklin center in Beaufort is every day except Wednesday, during the published hours.
Get it ready
Put furniture, toys and other bulky items in the class two container at the center and ask the attendant when an item is unusual, because the booklet names dressers, mattresses, sofas and tables as the large items and limits that list to the four large centers. Keep ammunition, fireworks, medical waste including syringes and smoke detectors out of the load, because no center takes them, and keep commercial material out entirely.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

The county booklet names mattresses among the large bulky items its convenience centers accept, with that list limited to the four large centers.

City cost & eligibility
The county does not publish a per item charge for a mattress at a convenience center, so confirm whether a fee applies. Entry to a center requires an active solid waste pass, which is issued to a county property owner rather than to a renter directly.
When & how
At Bluffton, Hilton Head, Shanklin or St. Helena on one of that center's open days, during the published hours, and within the two load per address daily limit.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry until it is unloaded, and take it to one of the four centers that handle large items rather than to a smaller neighborhood center, because the booklet limits the dresser, mattress, sofa and table list to those four. A renter whose building is owned by a commercial business has to ask that business to arrange disposal instead.

Appliances and scrap metal

Accepted with preparation

Appliances and scrap metal are accepted at the four large centers, with the doors removed before the unit is dropped off.

When & how
At Shanklin, St. Helena, Bluffton or Hilton Head on one of that center's open days, during the published hours.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before it leaves the house, because the county asks for that before disposal. Take the unit to one of the four large centers rather than a neighborhood center, and keep the appliance out of the recycling containers, which take only the big five materials.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste no longer uses a public collection event: the county takes it by appointment at two dedicated sites, because South Carolina bans the material from landfills.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes no fee for the appointment based electronic drop-off on the retained pages, so confirm whether a charge applies when the appointment is booked. The drop-off is residential only and the appointment is required, with the material refused at the other convenience centers.
When & how
By appointment at 106 Shanklin Road in Beaufort or 9 Benton Field Road in Bluffton, on the day the appointment is set for.
Get it ready
Delete personal information, files and storage from the device before the drop-off, because the county asks the resident to do that. The county takes personal computers, laptops, CRT and LCD monitors, CRT and non CRT televisions, printers, hard drives and miscellaneous electronics such as cell phones and fax machines, while household items such as microwaves, vacuums, stereos, speakers, VCRs, lamps, keyboards and cords belong at a convenience center instead and will not be accepted at the electronic drop-off.

Construction and demolition debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction and demolition material is accepted at every convenience center within the center's capacity, and a larger amount goes to the county landfill instead.

City cost & eligibility
No retained page publishes a charge for construction debris at a convenience center or at the landfill, so confirm the fee and the acceptance with the receiving site. The center route also requires the active solid waste pass and the county forbids commercial waste at centers entirely.
When & how
At a convenience center on one of its open days during the published hours, or at the Oakwood Landfill in Ridgeland for a larger quantity.
Get it ready
The booklet describes the material as lumber scraps, sheetrock, shingles, wallboard, plaster, cabinets or carpet, and accepts it at all centers while directing larger amounts to the landfill. Keep the load to household scale, because centers have limited capacity and two loads per residential address per day, and keep commercial project material out of the county system altogether.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on any county list, so the route is a confirmation against the class two bulky container or the City's hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The county booklet does not name exercise equipment, and it publishes no per item charge for the class two container, so confirm acceptance and any fee with the center attendant before loading the machine. A city household can also ask its contracted hauler, whose own published bulky item terms could not be read.
When & how
At a convenience center on one of its open days if the attendant confirms the item, or on a day the City's hauler sets.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart and keep the weights with the frame so two people can handle it. Confirm the item with the attendant when the load arrives, because the class two container is described for furniture, toys and miscellaneous bulky items rather than for a named machine.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Two systems: the city truck and the county center

Inside the city limits, one contracted hauler collects trash, yard debris and recycling, with recycling every other week on the same day as the other pickups, and the household pays for the program monthly through its water bill. Outside that route, the county convenience centers take the material the truck will not, and the county states that it does not provide curbside pickup at all.

A county pass opens the center gate

An active solid waste pass is required to enter a convenience center, and the pass is available only to a Beaufort County property owner with a livable dwelling unit on the property. A household receives one sticker and, with an email on the application, a digital barcode that other vehicles at the address can use, and the pass allows three visits a week with the week running from Sunday through Saturday.

Center days and hours

Convenience centers run from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and every one of them is closed on Wednesday and on the county holidays. The centers that take the large items are Bluffton, Hilton Head, Shanklin in Beaufort and St. Helena, all open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A trailer is allowed only at those four centers and may not exceed five feet by eight feet.

What no center will take

Ammunition, fireworks, medical waste including syringes and smoke detectors are refused at every convenience center, and commercial waste is forbidden outright, with businesses responsible for their own transport and disposal. A large propane tank and any item a household cannot safely hand over belongs outside the center system entirely.

Electronics have their own door

Screens and other electronic devices are banned from South Carolina landfills and are no longer collected at a public event, so they go by appointment to 106 Shanklin Road in Beaufort or 9 Benton Field Road in Bluffton. Small household electronics such as microwaves, vacuums, stereos and lamps belong at a convenience center instead, and the resident deletes personal data before any device leaves the house.

City of Beaufort with Capital Waste Services and Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling

City curbside contract

A household at an address inside the City of Beaufort limits, where the City contracts trash, yard debris and recycling pickup.

Cost & conditions
The City charges residents monthly for the solid waste program through the water bill to participate, and the initial recycling bin is provided at no cost, but no retained page publishes the monthly amount, so confirm the charge and how it appears on the bill.
Arrange it
Look up the collection day for the address, set the containers out on that day, and keep recyclables loose. Ask the City or its hauler about a bin, a repair, a missed collection or a billing question.

The city route covers household trash, yard debris and recyclables only, and bulky items, mattresses, appliances, construction debris and electronics all leave that route for a county center or the appointment based electronic drop-off.

County convenience centers

A county property owner with an active solid waste pass and a load of furniture, appliances, tires, construction debris, yard waste, recyclables or household hazardous waste.

Cost & conditions
No retained page publishes a per visit or per item charge at a convenience center, so confirm any fee at the center you use. The pass itself is free to apply for but is restricted to county property owners with a livable dwelling unit on the property.
Arrange it
Apply for the solid waste pass, check which center takes the item and whether it is open that day, load the material so it can be unloaded safely, and present the pass at the gate. Ask the attendant about anything unusual before leaving the load.

Centers are closed Wednesday and on county holidays, the pass allows three visits a week, a household is limited to two loads per address per day, trailers are allowed only at the four large centers and cannot exceed five feet by eight feet, and commercial waste is forbidden.

Oakwood Landfill for a larger load

A household with more construction and demolition debris, more yard waste or bulkier material than a convenience center will take.

Cost & conditions
The county directs larger quantities to the Oakwood Landfill in Ridgeland but publishes no tipping fee on the retained pages, so confirm the price, the accepted material and the hours with the landfill before the load leaves the property.
Arrange it
Call the landfill to confirm acceptance and the fee, secure the load, and drive it to Ridgeland rather than leaving it at a center.

The county's two pages print different street numbers for the landfill, so confirm the address before hauling, and note that a center still requires the solid waste pass for anything a household takes there instead.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Beaufort splits the job between a city contract and a county center system. At a city address, one contracted hauler takes trash, yard debris and recycling, recycling runs every other week on the same day as the other pickups, and the household pays for the program monthly through its water bill. Everything that route refuses goes to the county. A county property owner applies for a solid waste pass, which allows three visits a week and opens the gate at nine convenience centers that run from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and close every Wednesday and on county holidays. Four of those centers, including Shanklin at 80 Shanklin Road in Beaufort, take the large loads: appliances and scrap metal with the doors removed, tires, and bulky items such as dressers, mattresses, sofas and tables. Every center takes the big five recyclables, bagged household garbage, yard waste in small amounts, construction and demolition debris, household hazardous waste in the shed, used oil and batteries, while ammunition, fireworks, medical waste, smoke detectors and commercial material are refused everywhere. Electronics are the exception to the whole system: they are banned from South Carolina landfills and go by appointment to 106 Shanklin Road in Beaufort or 9 Benton Field Road in Bluffton. Anything larger than a center will take is directed to the Oakwood Landfill in Ridgeland, and a renter in a commercially owned building has to ask the property to arrange disposal instead of using the pass.
