A Beaufort County solid waste decal is required for non-recyclable and solid waste disposal, limited to one decal per property owner and three visits per week per household.

Mattress & bed removal in Hilton Head IslandCity collection Neither the town nor the county names a mattress on any of its lists. The nearest published category is bulky household items at the convenience center, which does not say whether a bed counts. That has to be confirmed with the county before the mattress is loaded, especially because there is no curbside collection on the island. No mattress route or fee is published by the town or the county, and the convenience center list stops at bulky household items without naming bedding. Call Beaufort County Solid Waste on 843-255-2736 before loading a mattress, and ask whether it counts as a bulky item and what a clean, dry mattress needs.

The local disposal guide
Hilton Head Island handles household waste through Beaufort County rather than a town collection crew. The town's own pages cover litter and recycling in parks and on the beach, where public bins take bottles and cans only, and they send residents to the county Convenience Center on Summit Drive. That centre takes bagged household garbage, bulky items including furniture, appliances, tires, batteries and used oil, and a solid waste decal is required for anything that is not recyclable, with one decal per property owner and three visits a week per household. Two things have moved or narrowed. Televisions and electronics are no longer accepted at the neighbourhood centres: the county books them by appointment only at a site in Beaufort and one in Bluffton, with periodic collection events in between. Household chemicals go to an HHW shed with a published accepted and prohibited list, but the county does not say on the pages read which centres have one, so that call comes first.

The county asks that appliance doors be taken off before disposal.
Electronics no longer go to the neighbourhood centres. The county states that computer screens, televisions, tablets, cell phones and similar electronics are available by appointment only at 106 Shanklin Road in Beaufort and 9 Benton Field Road in Bluffton, and that they are not available for drop-off at the other centres, which includes Summit Drive. Periodic electronic recycling events fill the gaps.
The county accepts residential construction and demolition debris only in small amounts, and the Hilton Head Island centre is one of the four sites where it is allowed along with Shanklin, St Helena and Bluffton. No size limit and no fee are published, so the answer for a renovation load has to come from the county before it is loaded.
Exercise equipment is not named on the town list, the county recycling page or the county centre page, even though bulky household items are accepted. A machine therefore has to be checked with the county before it is loaded, and it should not be assumed that a treadmill qualifies simply because it is bulky.
The island's bulky route is the county Convenience Center on Summit Drive. Bagged household garbage and bulky items such as furniture and bulky household items are accepted there, along with the recyclable streams, and the gate requires a Beaufort County solid waste decal for anything that is not recyclable. Each household is allowed three visits a week.
Tires are accepted at every county convenience center, including the Hilton Head site. The county caps the load at four tires a day and takes automobile and motorcycle tires only, so truck, trailer and equipment tires are out of scope on this route.
Household chemicals go to a county household hazardous waste shed with a published accepted and prohibited list, and empty containers go in the trash. The county pages read do not say which centers have a shed, so a resident has to ask before taking paint to Summit Drive.
The handoff matters
The town's waste pages cover litter and recycling in public spaces rather than a municipal collection route, and the county tells commercial businesses to contract a private hauler. Households bring their material to the county Convenience Center on Summit Drive, where the gate requires a Beaufort County solid waste decal for anything that is not recyclable. The public bins in parks and on the beach are not a household route: they take bottles and cans only.

Trailers are allowed at the Hilton Head site but only up to five feet by eight feet.
