A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is on the city's acceptable bulky list, so it goes out with the rotating bulk truck or to a Refuse Collection Center.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash, and mattresses are named on the acceptable list for the curbside bulk route and accepted at the Refuse Collection Centers. The curbside service is limited to twelve collections per property in any twelve-month period and is not offered to businesses, apartments or landlords.
When & how
Put the mattress at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your bulky collection week, or take it to a Refuse Collection Center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress in its own pile, separate from household garbage, brush and yard waste, at least five feet from other stationary objects and near the street in front of the residence, without blocking the roadway, sidewalk, ditch or catch basins and without covering water meters or sitting under low-hanging wires.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named on the city's acceptable bulky list and on the Refuse Collection Center list.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash, and furniture is acceptable both on the curbside bulk route and at the Refuse Collection Centers. The curbside route is capped at twelve collections per property in any twelve-month period.
When & how
Set the furniture out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your bulky collection week, or bring it to a Refuse Collection Center, which opens Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the piece separate from household garbage, brush and leaves, five feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other objects, and out of the alleyways, because the city asks that bulky material sit as near as practicable to the street in front of the residence. Carpet and padding are also on the acceptable list when they are part of the bulky pile.

Large household appliances

Accepted with preparation

Heavy appliances are on the city's acceptable bulky list and accepted at the Refuse Collection Centers, while the city landfill expressly refuses them.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No per-item fee is published for bulky appliances on the curbside route or at the Refuse Collection Centers. The city landfill is a different case: it refuses appliances and other bulky items, and it is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence.
When & how
Put the appliance out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your bulky collection week, or take it to a Refuse Collection Center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Empty and clean a refrigerator or freezer, secure or remove the doors, and keep the appliance out of the garbage container. Water heaters and heavy appliances are on the acceptable list, and appliances must not be mixed with household garbage in a bulky pile.
Brush and bulk trash collectionRefuse collection centersLandfill

Televisions

Accepted with preparation

Televisions are named on the city's acceptable bulky list, so they leave with the bulk truck rather than through the electronics route.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Televisions appear on the acceptable list for the city's bulky trash collection, which carries no published per-item fee, and the curbside route is capped at twelve collections per property in any twelve-month period.
When & how
Put the television in the bulky pile at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week.
Get it ready
Keep the set in the bulky pile rather than the household garbage, since the city requires garbage to be bagged inside the automated container and does not collect material placed on the ground or on top of a container. Wipe anything that stores personal data before the set leaves the house.

Computers and computer-related electronics

Accepted with preparation

Computer-related electronics are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which is free to Hamilton County residents, and they are refused at the Refuse Collection Centers.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city's landfill page describes the Household Hazardous Waste Facility as free to any Hamilton County resident, and computer-related electronics are on that facility's accepted list. The Refuse Collection Centers list computer electronics as not acceptable.
When & how
Take the equipment to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which is open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. excluding the city's listed holidays.
Get it ready
Bring a state-issued driver's licence proving Tennessee residency, keep the load inside the limit of fifteen gallons or 150 pounds per household, and wipe data from anything that stores it. Non-computer electronics are on the facility's not-acceptable list, so a television goes out with the bulky pile instead.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Chattanooga runs no municipal route for construction and demolition material: the curbside bulk list, the Refuse Collection Centers and the city landfill all refuse it.

City cost & eligibility
Building materials, lumber, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation and tile are refused at the curb, at the Refuse Collection Centers and at the City Landfill, which states plainly that city residents may not use it for construction and demolition waste. Birchwood II, LLC operates the private construction and demolition landfill next to the city landfill, and the city publishes no rate for that operator, so the load is a private arrangement.
When & how
Arrange the load directly with the private construction and demolition landfill the city names, or with another licensed facility, because neither the bulky pile nor the centres take this material.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the bulky pile and out of the household garbage, keep any load on a truck tarped because the city landfill refuses uncovered material, and keep liquids, hazardous material, batteries and gas tanks separate because those are refused as well.
Brush and bulk trash collectionRefuse collection centersLandfill

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Neither the bulky list, the Refuse Collection Center list nor the landfill names exercise equipment, so the machine has to be confirmed with the city before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no rate or named route for an exercise machine. The bulky list covers furniture, mattresses, heavy appliances, water heaters, carpet and padding, large toys and televisions, and the Refuse Collection Centers publish their own acceptable list, so call Chatt311 on (423) 643-6311 and confirm which route the machine may use before it is set out.
When & how
Confirm the route first, then either put the machine out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the bulky collection week or take it to a Refuse Collection Center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the pieces together, remove any console or battery pack so it can be handled separately, and keep it five feet from parked cars and other stationary objects if it goes to the curb.
Brush and bulk trash collectionRefuse collection centersSolid waste and recycling

Mixed bulky loads and clean-outs

Accepted with preparation

The city's bulky route sweeps each area on a rotating schedule, and a property may use it twelve times in any twelve months before the centres become the other option.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash on the curbside route or at the Refuse Collection Centers. Both are capped instead of priced: twelve bulky collections per property in any twelve-month period on the curbside route, and twelve centre visits per calendar year with eight bags per visit.
When & how
Separate the piles and put them at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week, with crews working through the area during the week, or bring the load to a Refuse Collection Center, which opens Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep brush, bulky trash, bagged yard waste and leaves in separate piles because the crews use different trucks and disposal sites for each, do not mix household garbage into the bulky pile, and keep everything at least five feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other stationary objects. A load at a centre must fit a standard truck bed, with no tandem axle trailers, dump bodies or trucks larger than a standard pickup.

Garbage at the curb by 7 a.m. in the city container

Garbage is collected weekly and has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, with everything in tightly secured bags inside the automated container. The wheels and handles face the curb with the arrows pointing to the street, the container sits within two feet of the curb, at least three feet from any obstruction and five feet from parked cars, and it comes back off the curb after the collection day. Garbage is collected on all holidays, with anything missed taken the following Saturday.

Garbage collection

Separate the piles and have them out by 7 a.m. Monday

Brush, bulky trash, bagged yard waste and leaves are collected by different trucks and go to different disposal sites, so they have to sit in separate piles at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Bulky material stays at least five feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other stationary objects, sits near the street in front of the residence, and must not block the roadway, sidewalk, ditch or catch basins, cover water meters, sit under low-hanging wires or go in an alleyway.

Use the city bulky collection

A Chattanooga household at a property it owns or lives in, with furniture, a mattress, an appliance or a television that the garbage container cannot hold.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash. The service is limited instead of priced, at twelve bulky collections per property in any consecutive twelve-month period, and it is not offered to businesses, apartment complexes or landlords.
Arrange it
Watch for the rotating area schedule, then put the piles at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week, keeping brush, bulky trash, yard waste and leaves separate. Chatt311 on (423) 643-6311 answers questions.

Twelve bulky collections per property in any twelve months, no businesses, apartments or landlords, and building materials, lumber, auto parts, liquids and 55-gallon drums are not acceptable. Household garbage must stay in the automated container.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

The self-haul route for a Chattanooga address depends on what is in the load. The city's three Refuse Collection Centers take appliances, mattresses, furniture, metal, drywall, limited tires, lumber and similar bulky material from city residents, but they require a licence showing Chattanooga residency and Hamilton County tags, limit a visit to eight bags, cap the year at twelve visits, and refuse computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush, car parts, propane tanks and hazardous material. Computer-related electronics and hazardous material go instead to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which the city describes as free to any Hamilton County resident and which is open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a Tennessee driver's licence and a fifteen gallon or 150 pound household limit. The City Landfill on Birchwood Pike is not a route for any of that material: it is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence, it refuses bulky items such as appliances and furniture, and it refuses construction and demolition waste outright. No contractors, businesses or landlords, no tandem axle trailers, dump bodies or trucks larger than a standard pickup, no load larger than a standard truck bed, eight bags per visit, and twelve visits per calendar year. The attendant may refuse a load, and the not-acceptable list includes computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush and leaves, car parts, propane tanks, hazardous material and small engines.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Chattanooga.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Chattanooga?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

How does a mattress leave a Chattanooga home?

Mattresses are on the city's acceptable bulky list, so the rotating bulk truck takes one from the curb, or the household can take it to a Refuse Collection Center. Either way the city caps how often it is used, at twelve bulky collections per property in a twelve-month period or twelve centre visits in a calendar year, and businesses, apartments and landlords do not qualify for the curbside route.Official guidance

Will the city take a couch at the curb?

Furniture is on the acceptable list for Chattanooga's curbside bulk collection, which runs on a rotating schedule through each area of the city, and it is also accepted at the Refuse Collection Centers. The curbside pile has to be out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week, kept separate from garbage and brush, and a property is limited to twelve bulky collections in a twelve-month period.Official guidance

How do appliances go out in Chattanooga?

Heavy appliances are on the acceptable bulky list, so they go out with the rotating bulk truck or to one of the Refuse Collection Centers, which also take microwaves. The city landfill is not an option, because it expressly refuses bulky items such as appliances and furniture and is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence.Official guidance

Where does a television go in Chattanooga?

Televisions are named on the acceptable bulky list, so they go out with the rotating bulk collection rather than with the weekly garbage, and they must not be mixed into the household garbage because that has to be bagged inside the automated container. The household hazardous waste facility is the wrong door for a television, because it takes computer-related electronics and lists non-computer electronics as not acceptable.Official guidance

Where do computers and other electronics go?

Computer-related electronics are accepted at Chattanooga's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which the city describes as free to any Hamilton County resident, and the facility is open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a state-issued driver's licence required and a household limit of fifteen gallons or 150 pounds. The Refuse Collection Centers refuse computer electronics, and the facility refuses non-computer electronics such as televisions.Official guidance

What do I do with construction debris in Chattanooga?

There is no city route for it. Building materials and lumber are on the bulky not-acceptable list, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation and tile are not acceptable at the Refuse Collection Centers, and the City Landfill states that city residents may not use it for construction and demolition waste. The private landfill next to the city site, operated by Birchwood II, LLC, is the route the city names, and it sets its own terms.Official guidance

Will the city take a treadmill in Chattanooga?

Nothing in the city's bulky list, its Refuse Collection Center list or its landfill guidance names exercise equipment, so call Chatt311 on (423) 643-6311 first and confirm the route. A machine that the city treats as bulky would go out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week, and anything going to a centre has to fit the standard truck bed load and the visit limits.Official guidance

How does bulk trash collection work in Chattanooga?

Dedicated trucks sweep each area of the city on a rotating schedule, collect Monday to Friday, and take brush, bulky trash, bagged yard waste and leaves separately, so everything has to be in its own pile at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. A property gets twelve bulky collections in any twelve months, businesses, apartments and landlords do not qualify, and a bigger clean-out goes to a Refuse Collection Center instead.Official guidance

How do I find my collection day in Chattanooga?

Chatt311 answers on (423) 643-6311 and the city also publishes an online day lookup and a request portal. Garbage is collected weekly and has to be at the curb by 7 a.m., the city collects on all holidays and picks up anything missed the following Saturday, and the bulky and brush crews follow a rotating area schedule rather than the garbage day.Official guidance

What are the limits at the Refuse Collection Centers?

A Chattanooga household may make twelve visits a calendar year and bring eight bags a visit, and the load cannot exceed a standard truck bed. The driver needs a licence showing city residency and valid Hamilton County tags, contractors, businesses and landlords are not allowed, and trucks larger than a standard pickup, tandem axle trailers and dump bodies are turned away.Official guidance

Where does household hazardous waste go?

To the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which the city describes as free to any Hamilton County resident and which takes residential material only from Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A state-issued driver's licence proving Tennessee residency is required, the load is capped at fifteen gallons or 150 pounds per household, and latex and acrylic paint, ammunition, explosives, medical and radioactive waste and commercial hazardous material are refused.Official guidance
